Blocked sunroof drain pipe

Featured Replies

I think my passenger side drain tube may be blocked or broken, could someone tell me how and what they used to unblock drain tube, also where is the outlet, was dark last night so didn’t hunt it down, is it by door hinge?

i poured water into sunroof channel, a minute later it pours out by the bonnet release handle,    Rang Skoda they what over 100 just to do a diagnostic test before the fix, I guess that’s a jug of water which iv already done

cheers

How can you diagnostic test a Sun Roof drain pipe, as you say £100 for a judge of water test. I think the drain pipe runs down the pillar next to the windscreen and then behind the arch liner. near the passenger door ( same as the Drivers side ). Take the trim off the pillar a have a look.

Found this but it's from a Yeti, might help

Having same water ingress issue from pan roof but after 3 days water testing the dealer couldn't replicate the leak. Within a week of having it returned the same thing again after heavy rain. No idea what constitutes a water test but I doubt it equates to a good old Scottish dose of "****ing down outside".

My previous post had some helpful links from others on the same subject...

This thread here will help.  It shows how to remove the A-pillar trims, and you can see the sunroof drain tubes running down the pillar.

Note: when I wrote this thread/posted these photos, I didn't know what those coloured tubes were, and I've incorrectly wrapped my dashcam wiring around them, to keep it all neat.... but I'm pretty certain I didn't wrap the tubes tightly, so I hope I never have a leakage issue, as it will mean unwrapping all that wiring again.

Not sure what you're supposed to do to unblock them though..... I can only assume they get filled with leaves, dirt and crud, to not sure how the mechanics unblock them.  Perhaps some long stiff plastic hose of a smaller diameter.... or some form of chemical clean, that you would use in a bathroom sink (done very very carefully) ?

Google has some interesting videos & articles.  One suggests using a small air compressor or a length of bicycle brake cable

The pipes run down the a-pillar, and come out under the front washer arm scuttle panels.

These can be a pain to get off, so be careful. You can get the passenger side one off enough to check the filter on the end of the pipe without remover the wiper arm, but you will have to remove the wiper arm to check the drivers side.

Happened on my E61 BMW 5 series, luckily under warranty. Water got into the wiring under the carpet on the passenger side and for months after the electrics had a mind of their own, in the end they took the car back and refunded less a mileage deduction.
