Head unit upgrade

Featured Replies

Just bought a 2015 vrs with I believe and amundsen headunit which has quite a small screen. Been looking at swapping for an android headunit. Any recommendations?

Or are there any easy swap skoda ones?

  • With a small budget you might look at a compatible Android unit.   Have a read of this thread:

See my build thread, have just installed my second radio upgrade. OEM is always my suggestion over an Android one but there is cost and a bit of work to put in. There are images in there of all 3 radios and all 4 screens I’ve had since buying the car. Final upgrade done: Columbus MIB2.5 with 9.2 inch screen :)

That looks lovely. What sort of cost was that?

£1100 for radio and screen. My old setup was half that.

You also need a USB (5Q0035726E) and then the component protection needs removing from the radio. Once that’s done the radio needs coding to work in the car. Have a chat with member pab567 when you are ready, he has done both of my radios and I’ve recommended him to countless others.

Sadly my old radio and screen are both sold.

I went for the 8" as i like the buttons when driving as its easier to change the channel without ending up in a ditch :giggle:

Sasha's set up is probably the best you'll see on a Pre FL car.

So what screen is that? Guessing its slightly cheaper. Seen an mib2. 5 unlocked with screen on ebay but it isn't cheap

This is the Alpine unit designed specifically for the Octavia MK3: https://www.raysmith.co.uk/alpine-skoda-octavia-9-media-system-with-carplay-android-auto-i902d-oc3

I actually like my Amundsen MIB2 and is one of the reasons I dont want to upgrade. If I could add a subwoofer to the Amundsen (Without a lot of messing about) I would do it :)

Saying that I like the two setups above :)

:envy: need

The screen Johnny has is a 5E0919605M FL 8 inch Amundsen screen and they work lovely with the 5Q0035874A Amundsen but the APP button won't work. To get back to SmartLink you find it in the Menu like you would with the original screen (it replaces the Traffic button which is also available in the Main Menu). These go for around the £2-250 mark but it's important to get one complete with the bottom trim as I don't believe these have their own part number.

That definately looks more in budget. Am I right that I'd need the newer amundsen headunit to get android auto?

And this would require unlocking?

The headunit we have at the moment is the older one so has the CD player

How did you get Netflix etc on Android Auto?

:shadey:   AA mirror, ive got it working wirelessly as well, as my charger is magnetic its handy as i dont have to plug any cables into it.

Re the app button ive heard the connect is hit and miss lots of complaints it would have been nice to work direct to AA or carplay, i guess that was the idea?   currently its menu>androidauto, so its not too bad

Yes, you need the radio unit and the screen. Do not buy a 5Q0035874B radio. It won’t work, has to be a 5Q0035874A.

Did you recently add the Virtual cockpit as well?

Yes. It makes the interior look so much more modern! It’ll be perfect when I can get the map mode working!

how much was involved in fitting the VC?

It’s only 2 screws and a wiring plug to physically fit it, then it’s ODIS coding to do the mileage, immobiliser and ABS adaptation. The rest is done with VCDS. It’s been quite hard to get this far as I’ve had to make it up!

yes i noticed there were a few management lights etc. does the dash have to be lifted up etc? and did you require any other hardware with it?

No, the dash pod comes out with just 2 screws. Nothing else needs to be removed. To get the full functionality with the map mode you need a MIB2.5 Amundsen or Columbus and a fibre cable. You allegedly need a Gateway and I think that is the thing that’s stopping me getting the map mode working but I can look more over the weekend.

Hi folks,

Just today i bought a 2016 superb, finally returning to skoda after a brief spell with vw, i know this tread is mostly based on Octavia but with very knowledgeable members like sashagray and pawel, and the interchangeability of of screens between both models of car I am hoping for some advice as to what the best option for me is,

If budget was not an issue I would love to Columbus 9-in touch screen, but I don't believe my glove box head unit will allow for this, my next hope would be the Amundsen (5E0919605M),

I am not sure if you can tell from the photographs attached if my head unit in the glove box is compatible and would this model fit the Skoda superb,

Many thanks for the replies and sorry for the noob questions hopefully the time I can be as useful to other people as some of the more experienced members here

For you, the screen you need is 3V0919606 PFL 8 inch Columbus or 3V0919605D FL 8 inch Amundsen. Plug and play :)

Sasha thank you so much, its been mind boggling last few days trying to figure out which unit i could get and the difference between all the glovebox head units with cd slot and no cd slots ect lol,

Im going to go for the 8 inch coloumbus as like earlier poster i do like having the volume dial,

Next will be the virtual cockpit when a few start appearing in the breakers yard, i see new ones for 1400 euro

Thanks again 👍👍
