Head unit upgrade

Featured Replies

You only need to do the Gateway on PFL if you want the extra dial info but it will work without it. Map mode works on mine fine, just needed a minor VCDS tweak.

  • What was the old setup? That's much more budget friendly even though I do really love the new head units.  Don't suppose youre selling the old one?

  • With a small budget you might look at a compatible Android unit.   Have a read of this thread:

Thank you for your help everyone, greatly appreciate it. Will sum up the costs of the upgrade parts and make a decision if it's worth it to go through the upgrade.

Hi. Great topic. I read it to the end.

I have 2020 Octavia MK3 with a Swing radio - 5E0035871D

There is no radio unit in glovebox. As I understand Swing is so basic that unit is behind of screen.

The question is what my options to upgrade to full glass look? I am quite happy with a functionality of swing but looking more fashion look.

Hi all,

I'm a new owner of a 2014 Skoda Octavia Mk3 I think. I usually have no issues replacing parts when I know which parts can be replaced with what. Now, enter car infotainment systems. Why for the love of God its so hard to find what's compatible is beyond me.

That being said, I have a feeling I might have a glimmer of hope in this thread. So far, I think I have the Bolero MIB 1 version. The screen shows this 5E0035840A and Hardware 040, Software 0435 Media Codec - N/A.

I'm looking to replace the screen for a larger one and I'd like to have android auto on the car.

Again, do apologize, but I couldn't find my exact part in there as I think there is a difference between the radio in the glovebox and the screen itself.

What parts would I need to make this idea of mine work?

Any help would be massively appreciated! Thanks folks!

I would suggest that you Private message @pab567. He is resident guru on infotainment. To get smart link you're certainly  going to need a new unit in the glove box and new screen to match from my limited understanding as Smart link (for Android Auto) only started being available late 2015 and is an additional cost as it has to be done via a dealer at circa £140.

@paulski Thanks! I'll do that and hopefully he won't mind the direct approach!

Hi, I have the single SD card head unit 5Q0 035 840 A and small 6,5 inch display unit 5E0 919 605 H. I would like to upgrade that display unit with 8 inch 5E0 919 605 N.

1. It's a straight swap, right? No additional cables or adapters are needed for the new display?
2. I don't have SmartLink, but I want to be activate by a Skoda dealer. Can I do it before display unit swap or it should be after that? I guess the SmartLink is operated by the head unit and not display unit, so maybe it doesn't matter.

See my build thread, have just installed my second radio upgrade. OEM is always my suggestion over an Android one but there is cost and a bit of work to put in. There are images in there of all 3 radios and all 4 screens I’ve had since buying the car. Final upgrade done: Columbus MIB2.5 with 9.2 inch screen :)

I know your the girl to ask this to..🤦🏻‍♂️My part number on my system comes up as 5E0035874A but I want a bigger screen to upgrade to with minimal fuss. With so many part numbers I’m kinda lost 😞 any help advice would be great. Thanks

Let me provide an update and answers to my questions:

1/ Yes, it was a straight swap with no coding needed or anything else - the 8” display 5E0 919 605 N is plug and play replacement of 5E0 919 605 H.

2/ It didn’t matter when I would install the new display unit, because SmartLink is installed in the head unit. Display unit only represents what headunit “sends” to it.

This is a great thread. I wonder if anyone here could help me please.

I have a MY15 car with Columbus MIB1- High Harman 5E0 035 020C and the full size screen and my car also has Canton. The MIB1 unit's DAB system has failed so I have two options.

  • Like for like replacement 5E0 035 020 if I can find one
  • Upgrade to MIB2, retain the screen.. but.. I have Canton.

Can anyone advise if an MIB2 upgrade is possible for my Canton equipped car whilst retaining the screen? If so, what part number for the MIB2 unit and USB plug (to enable carplay)

Many Thanks,

What features do you want? That’s a MIB2 Bolero. If you want the larger screen then 5E0919605N is the one you want, plug and play upgrade.

But what do you do with the data cable? Radio works but not the screen, the data cable is a bit different :(

I've picked up my Octavia 2.0 TDI and I have a product ID for the stereo.

This is 5E0035842A

Think it's meant to be a Bolero but not sure lol.

I have a very little budget, and I'm looking to get an Android Auto compatible unit.

Would I need to have one of the Skoda units or could I say, buy a Sony or a Kenwood and alter space behind the head unit to fit it?

With a small budget you might look at a compatible Android unit.

Cheers folks

I am going to change but have read you need to change the USB as well to go along with everything.. is this correct and if so why? Thanks. D

Hi There. My Columbus infotainment system is playing up, sometimes I have sound, sometimes not. Skoda say it needs replacing but want £1000 to do so. I'm looking to sell the car so cant really consider paying that much. Any suggestions for a cheaper option that will do the job? I've had a look online but tbe selection is a bit overwhelming. Thanks in advance, Simon

Did Skoda say what the problem was? What kind of replacement are you looking at?

They just said they thought it needed replacing (not very helpful). The sound is intermittent - worked fine today on the way in to work, but can go for days/weeks with no sound and then suddenly reappear. Sometimes sound goes off mid-journey, but often after the car has stopped, engine off etc and then re-started. It's not the speakers I don't think, as the parking sensors work fine. When the sound fails it is for all applications: radio (DAB and AM/FM), satnav, phone etc. Any suggestions welcome. I am just looking for a satnav/radio/DAB replacement. The car has a separate CD player in the glove box so unsure if this would work with a non-skoda replacement.

https://incartec.co.uk/product/JVC-KW-M25BT-mechless-Double-DIN-head-unit-Bluetooth-USB-Android-mirroring-HU-JVC-KW01 - saw this one and thought it might do the job; can buy a fascia and DAB lead too
