Brake size on facelift VRS 230 and 245

Featured Replies

Hi everyone

After doing a search through the forum I can't seem to find any definitive answers.

Can anyone confirm what the front and rear brake disc sizes are on the facelift VRS 230 and the 245.

Not sure if both models use the same size or not.

I've also read they are both the same size as the Golf R, but unable to determine the actual size.

Any further info would be great!

Not sure about the 230 but my FL245 has 340mm ventilated front and 310mm ventilated rears. I have uprated the brakelines to HEL stainless steel with DOT5.1 motorsport brake fluid. Brakes are now mega on road or track.

FL230 is 340mm vented front, 272mm unvented rear

FL245 is 340mm vented front, 310mm vented rear. I think this is the case for both the special edition 245 and the current standard 245.

As above, 220 and 230 petrol is 340/272 with the 272 discs being solid.

245 in all its forms is 340/310 vented all round.

The diesel for reference was 340/272 pre MY16 and 312/272 post MY16.

Fitting the 310 rear brakes isn’t so hard. I have finished refurbishing mine and I would have them on if I didn’t have lots of work to do. Hopefully I’ll have them on over the weekend.

What's the consensus with fitting VRS brakes (340/272 tdi variant) on a standard wagon?  or even just the front as they have more in common component wise.

You would need the bigger calipers and dust shields also.:o

Ta.  Wont bother then.  I'll just look at better pads and discs when the time comes.

I recommend going up to 340/310 if you were going to do it as the 340/272 setup is very nose heavy under braking and the bias is not neutral. The ideal is 340/310 which is more even but very heavy. 312/272 is good, and with decent discs and pads should be good enough for most applications. Lighter than the larger setup but still decent. What is the setup on the non vRS? Just thinking in case there is a marker for my 272 rear callipers :D

Just had a nosey round and your guess is as good as mine.  Likely 255 on the rear and maybe 276 or 288 on the front.

Having found that out makes its sound like upgrade might be worth it, even to 312/272.

Have a measure and I’ll have a look too and if you want my 272 red rear callipers, maybe we can come up with something

@SashaGrace have you got the part No's for the 310mm rear disks & pads. Some motor factors are tell me from my reg No. I've got solid 272mm rear disks

Fn worst still VAG Etka can't identify my VIN

the more i look at the tiny little 272 rears the more i want to stick something a bit bigger, absolutely pointless but it looks so unbalanced with 19" extremes

I know what you mean, I have the same problem.

I got brembo ones from ECP and I selected 310 from there. Strange that they can’t look it up, perhaps get the ref from another 245 and look it up from that.

Tony are you saying your 245 came with 272mm solid rear discs and you've just noticed after 20 months? Mine are most definitely 310mm ventilated on the rear.;)

According to xman I am endowed with a 517nm penis so can't complain. Not sure how he measured it though?

They are the same brakes as a Golf 7R and Audi 8V S3 only the dust shields are individual to the 245 as all the others are 4x4

Part number is 1K0615601N for disks 8V0698451A for pads.

I could have sworn the 2.0 TDi had 312X25+272X10 but it may have been the higher powered Scout I was thinking of. If not it will be 288X25+253X10 and the 312/272 brakes will be a good upgrade, plenty of them around used although they are a popular upgrade on a few things.

All the MQB calipers I have seen are TRW. ATE tended to be used MK5/6 Golf era. Have not seen actual 245/MK7.5 calipers in the flesh but I don't think they will have changed from the Pre-FL/Mk7.  Should make no difference to the disk choice though as they are interchangeable. I have had both ATE and TRW calipers on the same spec disk. Pads are different though

If you must, better than ones with holes in I will give you that, not as good as plain ones IMHO. Good if you like dust and noise

Yeah mine are TRW washed them so many times whilst swapping between 3 sets of alloys.

Audi TT-S, 4 piston ATE alloy calliper..straight bolt on for MQB platform & works with the 340mm "R" discs...& is way lighter than the 340mm disc standard piston calliper (60mm)

just you have to undo two 200NM bolts to get to the pads....arrgghhh!!….as there is no pad pins etc like normal 4/6/8 etc piston callipers.
