Poor sat nav. Possible to change?

Featured Replies

Hi. I have had a look around but can't find an answer.

I have a 2014 with a bolero unit (bigger screen) with built in sat nav.

I want to change software or be able to use Google maps through my phone. Is it possible to do this? The standard software doesn't let me enter a post code search.

I was wondering if it's possible to use an sd card with tomtom maps or something.

My bolero doesn't support screen mirror or android auto. Is there a way to add this?

Bolero doesn't have Navigation, if it's the bigger unit you have Columbus. Columbus definitely has postcode search, are your maps up to date? I have a 63 plate with Columbus and I can definitely input 7 digit postcodes.

Not possible to add android auto to yours as it's MIB1, only newer MIB2 units (late 2015 onwards iirc) support those features. You'd need to replace the whole system which can be done, as @SashaGrace has done if you find her thread.

You can't use a TomTom SD or anything like that. Your only option is to make do, or upgrade to a newer MIB2 that allows screen mirroring.

Ok thanks.

Maybe the fl has a better unit but when I try to search for a destination it's asking for town/county/Road name/number. Can't see any option to just search by post code.

Even if I could the navigation is the worst I've ever seen.

Try touching town/city and it should then allow you to enter a postcode.  Took me a while to work it out on my old car.

Postcode is the bottom left button on the screen when entering town and you have the keyboard up. I think the word postcode is abbreviated to ptcd or something like that.

I honestly don't find it that bad, I don't rely on it daily, but whenever I've done a far trip I'm not familiar with, it's always got me there no issues. It's definitely not as good as some of the newer smartphone based systems which have more features, but I find it does the job just fine.

You need to press the Ptcd. button if it’s there or if it’s a Columbus it should take a postcode if you enter it. The best way to progress is for you to determine the model number of the radio in the system info or a picture of it may help (it won’t help much if it’s a Columbus unless it’s on) and I can advise on costs etc from there. I am on my second retrofitted radio at this point, now running the latest MIB2.5 Columbus and it’s awseome! I use my SmartLink much less with this unit because the nav is much better than the old MIB2 Amundsen, not that I find either bad.

I really do like the Columbus Nav - I wasn't particularly looking for a car with this fitted when I was searching, but when this one came up and it was installed, very happy.

It's not failed to get me to my destination yet.

I think I’ve commented on your post about this on Facebook. The detailed answer is there, my build thread with some great info and contact details for Pawel (pab567) who is the authority on all things MIB :)

Pretty sure there is.

Select Navigation

New destination

Select city

Then at the bottom left there is a postcode search.

I just nipped out, especially for you, and made this quick video:

Amundsen and Columbus nav systems are different, my Columbus doesn’t have the Ptcd. button, it should take a postcode in the main search.

It is there on the old 'button' style Columbus. touch 'new dest' then touch 'town' and it comes up on the next screen in the bottom left as 'postcd'. Touch that and you can then enter the postcode.

Yup this. That's how I do it on my MIB1 Columbus, definitely have to press the bottom left of the screen before inputting the postcode.

My LTE MIB2.5 Columbus just takes it all, postcode, business name, POI or street name into the search bar. Interesting that it’s not the same on the older ones.

It's also interesting how badly it is designed. It's clever enough to grey out the letters it knows you can't type because it knows a list of postcodes and what follows each letter. But it's not clever enough to default to alpha input (it defaults to numeric) and then when you have entered the letters, it doesn't automatically switch to numbers. I'm not aware of any postcodes that have 3 letters at the start, so after 2, it should auto switch to numbers.

It's just the little things like that. They clearly didn't do a course on human-computer interaction or user interface design. It really is a poorly designed system.

Most (all? not sure?) European postcodes are numbers only.  The Sat Nav UI makes much more sense if you're German....  There was no optimization of the UI done at all for the UK,

Well I found the postcode search. Makes it a bit easier.

The navigation isn't the best though. Always seems to bring me off the motorway earlier even after playing around with the settings. I also don't get traffic updates on the map. I have to manually go and check the traffic.

Guess I'll have to put up with it as it's looking expensive to change

all european ones I'm aware of are 5 digits. They're also not road-specific; I live now in 15700 and it's a massive swath of the town. It's only the Canadians I know of who do it in a similar way to the UK.

If you have smart phone you can always use the maps on that and keep the inbuilt system on for radio etc.  I have a brodit mount specifically for the octy that attaches to the dash partially covering the vent above the normal screen.  Then just fit whatever phone holder you want.  I have one like pictured.

Doesnt like that second pic.  Maybe some words below will help.

Danish postcodes are 4 digits :)

true. Now I think more about it, Swiss ones are four-digit too.. but the principle holds, digits only :)

Well silly me, I assumed that if you were looking at a UK map, in the UK, in a UK registered car, the sat nav would be set to UK settings! :) I agree it makes much more sense for post codes that are all numeric.

Good vid!

I've got the same infotainment unit as you but every time I finish entering the postcode and click it I will get a message that states "No Street Data Available". I have to press ok on this error but bar that the sat nav works ok.

I've not found a way to suppress that message yet. I am on the latest maps too. It's not the best system out there for sure.

I prefer to use my Garmin which is a bit of a shame really.

Personally I have zero problems with here on my phone.... tried using the Skoda nav while in a rental and it was atrocious. Here is a lot better and can download maps for offline use. I currently have half of Europe on there, have used the US without any problems. Never mind being able to switch to miles and interrupting music from Spotify correctly for announcements. Maps are also updated frequently.

Can't say I've used anything else since getting it set up.

I have a lot of time for Here maps. Best thing Nokia ever did :)
