Nightmare clutch issue

Featured Replies

It certainly is best to renew the flywheel at the same time as a new clutch, I am assuming it is the modern Dual Mass Flywheel. Due to a good map on my car giving more performance, I needed a new performance clutch at 28k miles. Just in case they put the new Helix clutch in and the DMF starts then playing up, they strongly suggested fitting a new flywheel at the same time. It would be a shame to take the gearbox out, fit a new clutch, put the gearbox back in and then have to take the gearbox out again soon after to then fit a new flywheel. All that labour charge!! So it the end I had the new performance Helix clutch kit, new slave cylinder, new DMF and braided line and bleed block to give the clutch pedal a more OEM feel. It cost me over £1700 all in all, but the peace of mind is priceless.

Cheers for the advice. I haven’t had it mapped or anything and it’s only a scout. It is a dual mass flywheel so I reckon I’ll get it done.

I believe they are installing LUK parts

So looks like mine is gonna cost £1100 to do and that includes the flywheel while everything is off. In your opinion, do you think it’s worth having done? Without the flywheel is £700 odd. The car has done just shy of 60k miles …

It depends on how it has been driven & what sort of journeys, I had a MK1 Octavia 1.9 Tdi with 188000 miles in 3 years of carefull chauffeur driving, DMF seemed fine but then started shaking on cranking & when firing up, the ragging sheared the drive straps on the pressure plate & one nearly chewed through the bellhousing.

My Yeti at 90k miles unknown history had an unrelated clutch problem no noticeable DMF clonks or rattles, I changed the DMF as a precaution, the old one had no more movement than the new but afterwards the engine was much quieter & less thrashy at high revs.

I would recommend that you change it but talk to them about the price differential, I know they will be marking up the price of the parts to make the labour seem less but the extra £400 is significantly more than I paid for a complete clutch, DMF and slave cylinder. Its only 5 more minutes labout to swap out the DMF, if they think you will go without then they will drop their price because that 5 minutes is bringing them £300 profit at the current price.

I paid €320/£ for the genuine LUK kit including delivery from Italy:

Thanks for the advice 👍🏻
