Noise over bumps.

Featured Replies

Hello Briskoda Forum, I'm a complete noobie here so I am truly sorry if this is in the wrong place or I am being stupid, worrying about my car unnecessarily, anyway, I'm just after a little bit of advice really.

I have a 65 plate Fabia Estate 1.2 110 (45k miles on the clock), now over the last few couple of hundred miles, I've noticed a creaking/squeaking noise ONLY when going over bumps, everything else is fine, NO knocks or ticking when going from lock to lock, shocks are fine with no leaks and car still handles and drives really nicely, also NO excessive tyre wear or pulling to one side.

If anyone could please help me with any suggestions as to what could be the problem, I would be much obliged to you.

Thanks in advance.

Jay.

In the past, on both an astra and on my mk 1 fabia vrs squeaking/crunching over speed bumps was caused by the bushes in the clamps on the anti roll bar. They wear and allow the bar to rotate in them making noise.. If it is that, not a major problem and certainly not expensive to fix. Might be able to scooch under the car and give them a visual inspection, it's the bar going between both front wheel wells.

I’d have said bushes given the checks performed. Worth a check!

Also, while looking under the car, check the condition of the "track control arm/wishbone/lower arm" rear vertical mounting as they can start to tear/split if that car has encountered a few too many deep potholes - my wife's 2015 Polo ended up with a split one under warranty, though it was noises being caused by the gearbox top mounting that was that car's problem, replaced under warranty and a different p/n of mounting fitted, original gearbox mounting was the normal petrol engined version, the replacement was the normal TDI version, I ended up considering that VW Group had been using the wrong gearbox mounting in the first place.

Edit:- oh, and welcome to this forum, also you have posted this in the correct section (or someone has by now moved it) and you are not being stupid!

If it's just a sharp squeak, like "punching a hamster" it's more likely the gearbox mount.

If it sounds like a donkey, like a two-tone squeak, then its probably the anti-roll-bar D bush.

I've currently got the donkey squeak @ 50k miles, checked it over and it is the anti-roll-bar D bush. I also had the gearbox mount go squeaky at about 35K miles last year, they greased it with silicon grease which did stop the noise, though if it is the mount, tell them to put the mount from the diesel on, as its a more suitable mount for the torque the engine provides.

If it is the D bush, you can buy the bush yourself from the dealer for £4.09 (or thereabouts) and do it yourself;

Slightly loosen wheel nuts

Lift the car up on a pair of axle stands, (to make it easier, put the axle stands underneath the ball joint on the wishbones, so the suspension is in its normal position.

Remove the wheels,

Remove both sides metal bracket and old bush,

Clean the anti-roll-bar and bushes with either brake cleaner or some iso-propyl alcohol

Do NOT grease!

Re-attach the bushes and clamp them down to the correct tightness

Put the wheels back on

Lower it back down

Tighten wheel nuts

It's 100x easier than trying to faff about doing stuff behind the wheel when the wheel is in the way.

If you can't get the axle stands under the ball-joint, then do everything the same, but only tighten them once the car is back on the ground.

Hi guys, sorry for the late reply and thank you all so very much for all your advice and support, I'll admit, I was very nervous and a little dubious about posting here (bad experience with other internet forum trolls) anyway, My Dad and I had the car off the ground over the weekend and it turns out that the Anti Roll Bar bush on the near side was at fault, also the control arm ball joint (also on the nearside) was on its way out, there is quite a lot of play there, I'm surprised I couldn't feel it through the steering wheel, I'm just waiting for the parts to arrive so I can have my car back to full order.

Once again, thanks for all your help, I now know where I can come if I need any good, solid advice.

If you're up for doing it yourself, grab the bushes from your dealer, and get some wishbones off t'interwebs.

I put Quinton Hazel wishbones on mine and i'm sure they are the oem manufacturers.

Replace in pairs.

How have the QH wishbones held up. I've just ordered a set as the rear bush on one side is looking quite sad. It's now squeaking over smaller bumbs. Im also going to do the ARB bushes at the same time

My Quinton hazell wishbones have been lost by Hermes so I've ordered powerflex bushes. I hope they come in time for my mot.

The Quinton hazel wishbones have served me well, still going strong nearly 2 years and 27k miles later. I found the powerflex bushes really improved accuracy and response/feel of the steering (make sure you get a laser alignment though), they didn't affect ride quality at all that i noticed.

I'm still living with the donkey that is my ARB bushes, it comes and goes, but i'll be sorting it properly with powerflex or superpro bushes once i get all the parts for my front suspension rebuild/upgrade.

I pulled the wishbones out last night the bad side had the rubber separate from the metal ring. I was able to fully remove it with one finger. Only symptoms were a knocking at full lock. Was fine at speed😯. Luckily it didn't come apart while driving.

I already have new ARB bushes from Skoda so will just use them for the moment.

Evening all,

First post here, thanks for having me! The issues above, specifically the 'donkey' squeak, seem to be the answer to a fault that has appeared on my 2015 Fabia. Does anyone know the part numbers for the ARB D-Bushes? The car is still covered by a service/mot package, but I want to provide the garage with the bushes to fix the issue rather than wait for them to charge me a fortune for the exact same items!

Thanks in advance

If you're with a Skoda dealership they won't fit any parts you supply, not even bulbs, because they can't offer warranty on the parts.

If you still want to get it done cheaper, i'd suggest either;

- buying genuine bushes from Skoda (theyll be like a few quid a piece)

- buying third party bushes from euro car parts or online elsewhere (we have an 18mm ARB which needs bushes which have 16mm inner diameter - the bushes are smaller than the bar so they clamp onto the bar tightly)

and then either;

- fitting yourself, you'll ideally want a set of ramps (you want to secure the bushes in place while the suspension is loaded, ei wheels on the ground)

- taking to an independant garage to fit them, if you're going this route, ask the garage how much theyd charge if they supply the part themselves, because there's a chance they might be able to get it even cheaper

The knocking has returned. On the other side. The bushes were fully seated. the metal rings were frozen and driven in with a mallet. Then I pressed in the poly bush. Why would it come out. This is on the near side. Oppisite side to were I had problems. I've hit a few potholes on that side would that be enough.

When fitting I used new nuts and bolts and did them up with suspension in normal position. Used a jack under the wishbone

Oh! Not much good if that outer shell can not stay down in the arm! I don't have an answer though, the usual tool that DIYers buy is for the original or upgraded Golf mounting bush, and it draws the complete original bush assembly down into the arm.

I went with powerflex bushes for this part, they're designed to lock in around the lip at the bottom of the wishbone. I've not had any issues with them popping out or any knocking.

That said though i'm going for Ibiza Cupra R wishbones with the solid rubber bushes when i do my suspension upgrades.

I've managed to get them back in. It was much easier than the 1st time though. I home they don't come out again. Do TT mk1 / R32 bushes also fit.

Are your powerflex bushes different to mine. Mine are part number PFF85-1202

This is what mine are like, it seems they've updated the design, for the worse aparently.

Ibiza Cupra R bushes fit our wishbones, or you could get the whole wishbone with the bushes already in (it's the same wishbone just with a different bush) but that's obviously more expensive.

I'm not sure if TT/R32 bushes are voided and soft like ours standard or solid rubber like the ibiza cupra r. And i'm not sure on dimensions either as ive seen some with different outer diameters on my travels through t'interwebs looking for bushes lol.

Ibiza Cupra R bushes are a definite though and you can get genuine ones for like £20 a piece from Seat. They're not a whole lot cheaper from aftermarket manufacturers.

These are the TT R32 bushes according to the polo forum they fit. They were also fitted some Ibiza 6j upto 2010. They are part number 8N0 407 181B

That's the Ibiza Cupra R bush, 8N0 407 181 B

You can get them from seat directly for not much at all (i think it was like £19 a piece or something, just ring them and give them that part number and ask for a price) or get a pair from another manufacturer for probably cheaper but possibly lesser quality.

Think I will go for them if the powerflexs pop out again. Is it better to also get an oe bush for the front bush. Would it be bad to mix poly and rubber.

I'm running the standard rubber bush on the front, think i'm going to replace it with a poly (superpro one though, the powerflex design one sucks).

Had a knocking noise today. It's come back out again. Think I will get the Ibiza cupra bushes. I'm hoping the wishbone isn't damaged.

I think it's also about time I get the fabia mapped. Once I've sold my golf I will probably do it.

20210216_195520.jpg

There is tool available to remove and replace these bushes, some quite cheap versions on ebay, I seem to remember buying one for when I finally need to replace these bushes, probably with the Golf R32/TT ones.
