Xenon headlight levelling

Featured Replies

Afternoon

I had a suspension level sensor fail on my 58 plate Superb which meant the headlights dropped to the home position. The faulty unit was replaced last week and the headlights have started their initial "dance" on start up when the lights come on.

However i thought that the lights were a little "higher" and after getting flashed by a couple of drivers on the weekend I brought it to a friendly MOT station that i use and they confirmed the lights were now too high.

So my question is whether this is a manual adjustment of each headlight unit or whether the lights are supposed to be re positioned via VCDS commands if the suspension level sensor has been changed? I don't have one so will have to use a local garage or the VCDS support map.

The system can adjust beam aim within a certain range of the nominal position. If that nominal position is wrong the lights will be unable to adjust enough and can end up too high or too low.

You need to get a manual alignment done on the headlights which will require VCDS to put the controller into Basic Settings mode.

On the Octy the bracket for the front sensor has a slot in it

And with VCDS in the headlight module measuring blocks you set the position of the ball joint in the bracket, and then to correctly adjust the beam setting, you again need VCDS to set the neutral position and then you manually adjust the internal headlight adjusters

Don't try and adjust your lamps without vcds. Plenty of people on here have tried it and ended up damaging the motor mechanism. It drives to its "nominal" position but you've moved it so keeps going as it's not hitting it. Strips gears and means a headlight replacement.

I used the vcds method to adjust the lights in a previous superb that were too low. It was very easy. I did however have to remember a bit of trigonometry to get the right angle!
