Skoda superb 2014 buyers help

Recommended Posts

I’m looking at a Skoda superb 2014. 2.0 tdi Dsg 4x4  It’s done 98k. £6200

Im after advice of what to look out for and if 4x4 worth it or not ?

What the service recommended?

If no service of 4x4 or dsg not been done will it be a bad idea not to buy or get done ASAP?

Haldex needs oil, pump cleaning and filter change. But , to me it is worth every penny.

Anything that can improve a car safety is always welcome

Haldex servicing for sure - my pump failed at 35k despite Skoda servicing, this is due to the filter not being changed and not recognised on Skoda's system - get it done by a specialist.

Unless you have a code reader, or promote wheelspin you can't really tell if the pump has failed.

Invest in a Carista OBD2 reader to check fault codes and keep an eye on regens/DPF (£20)

At that mileage I would book in for a 4 wheel alignment, guaranteed to be needing re-aligned and makes a huge different to driving and tyre wear.

Batteries are weak on these cars, mine was marginal and was replaced after only 4 years.

Hope that helps.

Mine's in for a service today. 61 plate 140 DSG 4x4 hatch. I've put 69k on in 4.5 years, now at 99k. It needs a wheel bearing & CV boot. Tyres (currently Pilot Sport 4s) & front disks / pads are all that's been replaced in that time. Service them properly & they're pretty hard to break. Haldex & DSG will need doing around 110k.

As for the 4x4, you've really got to push it to get any understeer or oversteer & wheelspin is almost non-existent. It just behaves. It's not a quick car but the handling belies its size. I do a fair bit of A & B road driving & it can be fun being tailgated by a BMW or Merc that's suddenly nowhere to be seen when you come out of a bend 😎

Brilliant thank all.

I’m wait to see the car this weekend . It’s done 98k . It’s a L&k superb. Would you buy one or go for a elegance?

L&K is the highest spec level available, so assuming everything works, it's the nicer option.

I am a year into owning our Superb 4x4 pre-facelift, I am very pleased with it, I did have to change the Haldex pump recently. The can have issues with the EGR cooler valve, the throttle valve (gums up with carbon due to the EGR pipe into the manifold being incorrectly fitted 180 degrees out during production but easy to sort). Turbo vacuum actuators can fail, injectors and high-pressure fuel pumps (usually due to a previous owner having filled and driven with the wrong fuel) Additional fuel pump can fail which sits by the expansion tank on the 170, the thermostat can fail for DSG gearbox causing overheating but this is separate to the engine thermostat. Mechatronics can fail, the clutch pack can rattle, wheel bearings fail, the battery can go flat due to early software (Columbus)

etc, if possible check the vehicle history, (PM reg and may be able to see some info on it). Mine is low mileage and manual, I love the DSG when it works, but will cost lots when they fail which is the only reason I went for a manual, I have seen too many fail to take the risk. Consider a comprehensive warranty or put some contingency money away each month to cover any future issues.

I don't regret buying it at all, mine drives very well, has loads of space and very good on fuel. It also has almost every option bar sunroof either fitted during production or aftermarket, also something I waited a long time to find. I was fortunate to look up the PR numbers fitted to the vehicle and out of seven cars, the one I chose was best additions with the lowest mileage. Must have for me was heated front screen as we spend a lot of time in the Alps, ventilated seats, heated front and rear seats, cruise control, additional soundproofing, Auto tailgate (make sure the latest struts are fitted). Anything else was a bonus, but I did not want a sunroof due to leaks and sticking issues.

Send us a link to the advert, it'll then be easier for us to give you specific advice on that particular car.

Do you have the registration number and therefore checked out its MOT history?

Nothing overly concerning, it averaged 30,000 miles a year in it's first three years, then only 7,000 miles since...

The "part service history" is a little concerning. I'd want to see evidence of the service history.

It should have had (variable servicing, up to 20,000 miles or 24 months, the car decides for itself dependant on driving conditions):

Service 1 (late 2014) @ approx. 20,000 miles.

Service 2 (early 2015) @ approx. 40,000 miles + DSG oil change

Service 3 (late 2015) @ approx. 60,000 miles.

Service 4 (early 2016) @ approx. 80,000 miles + DSG oil change

Service 5 (early 2017) @ 3 years old - brake fluid

Service 6 (late 2017) @ approx 89,000 miles.

Service 7 (due now or in a few months) @ approx. 100,000 miles.

Which services / service items has it missed out on?

Now the mileage has dropped to less than 10,000 miles per year, the service interval needs changing from variable to fixed (12 months or 10,000 miles, whichever is reached first). Unless your annual mileage is expected to be higher than what the current owner has covered over the last 12 months.

Cheap though, a lot of car for just over £7,000.

Not sure I could live with the L&K's brown interior :D

No dealer history of being serviced so could have been sold to a fleet firm and serviced outside the network.

Emission update was declined back in 2017, so you could pitch up at a dealer, get the update done and have 2 years warranty on around ten engine parts but only upto 155000 miles.

Last visit to dealer other than to refuse update in 2017 was in 2014 around 11K on the clock for 12v socket blowing fuses.
