Giving serious consideration to getting a dashcam but not sure if required.

Interested to poll Briskodians.

Should probably have put this in the ICE and Security Forum - mods, please feel free to move to appropriate place.

You didn't vote! 😧

100% get one. Oncoming car drove into my car on Good Friday, writing it off and removing the rear axle in the process. The dash cam made everything clean cut. The t**t might not have been able to dispute being more than two times over the limit but he could potentially have contested other things. The police were noticeably happy at the scene when I told them I had it all on dash cam.

Hopefully it will sit there largely forgotten about and you’ll never need it, but should the worst happen why wouldn’t you want one?

I've got both front and rear dash cams fitted, as Loopylil states you might need them one day

I actually have the blackvue DR650S-2CH ordered for pick up to my local Halfords.

It's 'no commitment' at the moment as I haven't paid or put down a deposit, but i'll likely buy it.

Dashcam only seems to make sense to me if you have a parking mode, so Blackvue was the option.

I've ordered the Power Magic Pro with it.

I like the idea of the battery, but that's a little too rich for me right now, and it's a huge thing to hide in the cabin.

I have the  Blackvue 650s-2CH version fitted with a Power Magic Pro, 24/7 recordings.

Cool, cheers. That's actually the version I'm getting, made a mistake above but edited it.

Do you turn it off much? for example, leaving the car in airport parking for a 2wk holiday - something like that?

Do you manage without the battery attached?

Both myself and the better half have Nextbase 512GW + 512 rear cam. Powered by Nextbase hardwire kits piggy backed from rear wiper.

The cameras have a G sensor and will come on and start recording if a bump is detected while parked -battery life is a few minutes.

It is also possible to wire them to a permanent live for 24/7 recording. However this will drain the car battery eventually -realistically i have no idea how long the process would take.

I fitted both setups myself. In to my Citigo and her Yeti

I find i get a lot of 'hate' driving the Citigo compared to other cars I've had.

Yep it's left on all the time, The power magic pro is fitted behind the end panel of the dash (open passenger door to locate ) so if I needed to turn it off it's easy to do.

Car stops at home if we are abroad, Son take us to/back from the Airport.  W normally go the the wife sisters as she lives in Portugal ( only beer money needed ). cheap B & B

That's unfortunate!

There is an element of 'how dare you record me' I would be mildly concerned about, but the pro's outweigh the con's overall I think.

I have the Nextbase duo, front and rear camera. Never wired it into a spare fuse in any car, but it plugs into a dual socket I fitted into the car from the single socket. I did it this way so that I could leave it on when the car is parked away from home for up to a day. If you get any real dangerous driving from other road users that affects you, footage on a memory stick can be taken to the police. That happened when a young guy in a van did not like me obeying the posted speed limits. Up close to the rear of my car, various hand signals not in the Highway Code and after overtaking me on approach to a blind bend, then did what I expected, he thought he would test his brakes! He got a visit from plod.  Also when a builders van committed 3 dangerous actions and two serious affecting me when he wanted to overtake me on a dual carriageway. Don't drink your coffee when you are less than a cars length behind me at 70mph van driver! I was myself overtaking trucks at the time, Shame he had the name of the company all over the van. It happened to be the company I had conducted  some defensive driver training 6 months before. His boss did thank me for the memory stick footage. If I ever get involved in a crash where I am not to blame, the camera footage should back up my side of the story as well. A long tale, but this is why I have a car cam.

roaddetective seems quite an apt name!

It's not the dash cams - the 'hate' is what prompted me to fit them. I think people just assume that the 'small crappy Skoda' is probably being driven by someone who is going to be really easy to intimidate and therefore drive aggressively and cut me up or pull out on me a lot more than when in other cars I've had and generally assume that I'll drive very slowly and will do stupid things desperately trying to get past.

Second vote for the Nextbase 512.

I had had a thought about fitting a high capacity power bank between the fuse and dash cam to get longer recording times. The power bank would power the camera when the engine was off and then when running it would charge the power bank.

Not sure how effective it would be, or how long the bank might keep the camera going for? Keep meaning to google it, I can’t be the first person to think of it, but has anyone done this?

Sadly I experienced this on the odd occasions when I used to drive my wife’s C1. Too many aggressive and unnecessarily impatient drivers on the roads.

It does I know. I got the name from a guy I was training quite a few years ago. I was doing a commentary on various clues to high risk areas. He then said, "you are like a bloody road detective". I liked the name so it stuck. Don't think mind I snitch on all road users, just the real dangerous ones that affect me on the road. It might stop them driving dangerously around some nervous driver in the future, if they think they might be monitored on a camera.

I dont know about the NextBase one, but so far as I'm aware, the Blackvue battery is only 3000 mAh, so basically the power of one of those portable power banks. Probably handy to have less stress on the car battery, but not sure how long it would last. The Blackvue one is said to have full charge after an hour of driving though.

I have a few Nextbase 312 & 412GW’s across 3 different vehicles, they work seamlessly much better than the sub £20 EBay items I use to have.

Both have WiFi, making connecting and downloading files really easy.

Halfords had the 412’s around £89 the other day down from £129 or so.

Guys who think they have big balls. It always amazes me how when you bump into someone on the street, everyone is all apologies, but behind the wheel, people act like right ******s.

Sad to see people look to bully the more vulnerable people on the road.

I’ve no idea what the capacity of the next base itself is, but you can buy power banks with 20,000+ mAh capacities.

Thinkware F770 Front and Rear, Hardwired into the fusebox

In the box in the boot, awaiting fitting. Still can't afford to have it fitted professionally.
