Economy mode - how to trigger it ?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have Kodiaq SE diesel DSG and have noticed that sometimes the "ECO" icon appears on the display. The manual says it is economy mode. I cannot "trigger" it with my automatic gear box and was trying to observe when it is enabled. It turned out when I slowly depress accelerator. But it doesn't always work ! Sometimes I depress it really slow but ECO doesn't appear.

Can anyone enlighten me how to trigger/enable it in a more cautious way ?

If its "eco" inside a circle that means active cylinder management is engaged, I don't think you have much direct control over this specifically. You can change the general driving mode to ECO with the  "MODE" button by the gear lever which displays the driving mode menu on the infotainment screen.

There are two different 'Eco' modes.

ACT or Active Cylinder Technology is only available on the 1.4 TSI (150PS) and 1.5 TSI engines, not the diesels, when ACT is active you'll see the word Eco with an arrow circled around it. It'll flash off and on as you press and depress the accelerator, as these are typically the conditions that determine when the cylinders shut down or come back online...

The other 'Eco' mode is on both the petrol and diesel engines and is selectable, it will remain on for the duration of that journey, or until you select a different mode (i.e. Comfort, Normal or Sports mode)...

Note the specific parameters that apply to vehicles fitted with an automatic (DSG) gearbox...

You can select the different driving modes either by pressing the 'MODE' button down by the gear lever, or directly via the infotainment screen...

From what you're describing it sounds like ACT, but this is not on the diesel engines such as yours, so it must be Eco mode, but then Eco mode doesn't turn on and off during a journey without the intervention of the driver, manually selecting a different driving mode.

Something isn't making sense.

The Eco symbol appears when the car is doing something economical, such as 2 cylinder mode in a petrol engine with ACT or when you are coasting in a DSG.  To change the drive style to Eco (DSG to eco mode, reduced power to air-con, etc) you need to change the drive mode to Eco.  If you have an SE, that was an optional extra, so if you didn't request this, you will not be able to set this.

To be honest I am a bit confused - my SE DSG doesn't have any eco mode setting and this icon appears on a display ... sometimes. I mean if I depress accelerator and coasting it sometimes appear and sometimes doesn't (and this is what I wanted to investigate - why ?) And if it appeared it disappears immediately when I depress the brake pedal ...

And I don't have any MODE button down next to the gear box ...

This is coasting - if you release accelerator pedal slowly, the coasting mode will be activated: symbol"eco" in dash and just D instead of Dx (x - number of engaged gear). It means the car rolls without any gear engaged.

But that is very unreliable - I tried it many, many times and sometimes it enables and sometimes it doesn't.

This is what I am trying to investigate: the" if you release accelerator pedal slowly" doesn't always work - I would even say it works 50/50. Sometimes I release accelerator pedal really slowly and the ECO doesn't appear. And sometimes (releasing) not that slow and the ECO appears on the display anyway ...

Would like to know some certain way to enable it ...

This is the only way.

Sometimes two step lift works - first half release and then full release.

Also driving behaviour - if you had just done some Colin McRae moves, coasting will take long before it kicks in.

But mostly only Hans the ECU programmer knows how and when the car reacts. Or should react.

I am quite opposite driver to Colin McRae ...

I assume Skoda in their infinite wisdom have replaced the word 'coasting' with 'Eco', as if there weren't already enough other features using the same terminology!

It was also possible to turn in on/off on previous models...

According to the manual, you shouldn't have the coasting feature on the SE, unless you added the drive mode selection feature as a factory option, which you've confirmed your Kodiaq doesn't have...

I  am about to driver over to the Scottish west coast with a fully laden car and tow bar mounted bike rack.  Was hoping to try Eco mode and see how it works, but seeing those operating  conditions for coasting says "No trailer or other accessory is connected to the trailer socket", then no coasting for me.  Oh well, maybe I go full sport mode instead!

Does your bike rack needs to be pluged in? With additional plate and lights? Otherwise coasting might even succeed.

But eco sucks anyway, Sport mode is a way to go.

On ours, if I recall it displays the Eco logo on the display when coasting, and only displays the word “coasting” if you have the instantaneous fuel economy displayed. Rather than show “- - -“ it says “coasting”.

I am 99% sure that ours will coast with the bike rack plugged in to the tow bar.

Conditions to trigger coasting in our SEL are fairly straightforward: the gear box has to be in Economy mode, it has to be in 3rd gear or higher, cruise control needs to be off, you need to take your foot off the throttle (makes not a jot of difference on ours if you step off the throttle suddenly or back off slowly). Touching the brake, throttle or a paddle shift will put it straight back into drive and give you engine braking or acceleration.

Makes sense. The screen grab above showing my car in "2-cylinder mode" only shows the wording when on instantaneous mpg.

Conditions in my RS are not so straightforward.

Coasting takes place in Economy, Normal and Comfort modes.

Also you don`t have to do the leg move - switching off the cruise from the stalk also triggers coasting.

Leg lift speed is also important - even manual says you have to do it slowly to get into coasting mode.

P.S. I haven`t sinned. I have tried Economy mode only once.

Good point. I forgot that cancelling cruise will also trigger coasting, unless the gearbox has already downshifted on a slope to increase engine braking and control speed. In that situation you have to lightly tap the throttle to trigger coasting.

?! My SE TDI DSG doesn't have Economy mode - how can I then use it ?

My 2019 2.0 TSI SEL does not coast when using or on disconnection of acc, but it will easily and reliably coast on lifting off lightly  in economy or normal modes.

As to whether that saves fuel is another debate.

How old is your Kodiaq?

The manual specifically claims that coasting is only available in 'Eco' mode. But as your Kodiaq doesn't have the ability to alter the drive modes then it would appear that it is available in 'Normal' mode too, assuming this is the default mode on cars without the option to alter the modes.

As @linni mentions earlier, his vRS model will allow coasting in all but 'Sport' mode. As the vRS is the latest Kodiaq model, then it might be that Skoda have changed the operational parameters of when and where coasting is available.

If your Kodiaq is new i.e. MY19, then it might be that coasting is now available in modes outside of 'Eco' i.e. 'Normal' and Skoda simply haven't updated the manual.

EDIT: downloading and re-reading the manual, "coasting" is available in Eco, Comfort and Normal, so even on the SE DSG without the drive mode select option you still get the coasting feature...

The only difference being that when not in 'Eco' mode (which you'll never be in as you can't select it) you have to slowly release the accelerator pedal to active the coasting feature...

My SEL 190tsi goes into coast/eco in normal drive mode from 5mph upwards.

I just take my foot off the loud pedal!

My 2017 SE tdi DSG didn't have coasting mode at all, ever.

My new 2019 SE L 190 tdi DSG does unless it's in sport mode I believe.

What screen were you on before the word 'Coasting' appeared?
