1.2 HTP not starting

Featured Replies

Hello, new to the forum.

I have a problem with my 2007 Fabia 1.2 HTP not starting. I have checked the OBD code, P0341 - camshaft position sensor error. Cleared the fault but still not starting and no faults showing. Reading up on this fault it sounds like the car should still run but in limp home mode. The engine does seem to turn over very easily which is worrying. I have removed the camshaft end covers and positioned number 1 cylinder at TDC. The slots in both camshafts are in the 5 past 7 position rather than quarter past 3 (horizontal). From what I've read it looks like the cam chain has jumped a tooth or 2 and possibly bent a few valves as well.

It's worth mentioning that the car is parked on a steep drive and left in gear (very steep drive and a weak handbrake). Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Yep, looking like chain jump I'm afraid.

Any rotation of these engines when not running tends to push oil out of the chain tensioner, making the chain slacker for longer at the next start-up. Rotating the wrong way is worse, I think.

Thanks for confirming, I'll get a mechanic out to assess the damage, I suspect it will be more than the car's worth. Any idea on a ball park figure to get it fixed?

I couldn't estimate it, but probably too much unless you can DIY lots of the labour.

If valves are bent, lots.

If it is an interference engine.

The chain is broke not jumped teeth.

Thanks for all your replies guys.

I'm going to get a compression tester to see if I've damaged any valves. If there's no damage I'll have a go at replacing the chain etc. If the valves are damaged I'll send it to the scrapyard in the sky! A shame really as it's a nice car but just not viable to repair.

But first I'm going on holiday for a week and try to forget all about cars 😀

Back from holiday and the postman has delivered the compression tester. I have never uses a compression tester before, I assume I need to disable the ignition and fuel injection in some way?

Yep. Connector plugs off all coilpacks and injectors.

Thanks Wino, all disconnected, throttle open and no compression on any cylinders, not as much as a wheeze 😭
