it works on the same principle and will have the same servicing questionmarks

The VAQ is made by Borg Warner who now own what used to be Haldex AG in Landskrona Sweden. I have been there a few times, it is just north of Malmö. Nice part of the country by the way.

It works on the same principles as the 'Haldex' coupling like I said above, and is actually called FXD (Front Cross Differential) by Borg Warner. VAQ is a Volkswagenism.

Borg Warner say "oil filled for life" in their presentations but I see that as a sales pitch to the car manufacturers for a 'fit and forget' unit like 'haldex' originally was. Some who work for Borg Warner in Landskrona are from the 'Haldex AG' days and think differently to their 'American giant' parent company on this.

If I had a FXD (VAQ) I would service it like I service all my 'Haldex' units. I would not be waiting until Gen 5 for it to be accepted it needs an oil change.

Isn't that just a case of re-using existing tech but marketing requiring a new name?

(VAQ is short for Vorderachsquersperre which translates as Front Axle Cross Lock, which actually seems closer to a literal description than "FXD" which is seems a made up marketing nonsense name in the context of a tranverse engined front wheel drive car)

Anyway I think we've established it needs servicing, so happy days.

"Volkswagen said that when it launched, the VAQ system was a first in a front-drive street car. It adds a multi-plate clutch between the differential and the right drive shaft. Basically a Haldex all-wheel-drive center diff. After all, there were probably lots of them on the shelf at VW HQ. But instead of sticking it in the center of the car, it’s in the front driveline"

"People seem to have got very confused about VW's 'Vorderachsquersperre' or VAQ system as fitted to the Golf GTI Performance and SEAT Leon Cupra. It acts like an electronically controlled locking differential but is actually entirely independent of the diff cage and, rather, distributes torque across the front axle using a Haldex style electronically controlled clutch system"

What about the front Haldex Diffs?
- Some Front wheel drive vehicles including the Golf GTI Mk7's with the Performance Pack and Leon Cupra Mk3 have a Haldex diff at the front of the vehicle.
- This 'VAQ' Haldex system actuates in the very same way as all of the four wheel drive Haldex systems, only it vectors the torque between the two front wheels increasing traction during performance driving conditions.
- These should be given the same service attention as the Gen5 four wheel drive models.

Dear all,

been following these posts.

If you could find time to help my dilemma, this would be a great help in resolving my issues when it comes to replacement of Haldex or any other recommendations for  4x4 Haldex/diff.

From new 2014 Yeti Outdoor SE 4x4, 19,127 miles and out-of-warranty after my PCP. Have been a devotee to Skoda with owning Fabia -new, Roomster - use.

My shorten story;

I recently had a service within dealer service network the  advisor called and  mentioned that I need to change the oil on the Haldex so I agreed to this and 5 days later my car with no apparent warning made a loud bang and nearly cause an accident driving on a narrow road locally.

FYI, I have lodge a complaint, spoken to Skoda UK.Arranged DEKRA inspection for a independent  report, most likely to take the legal route fairly soon.

Are there any OEM systems that's more reliable than the Haldex 5th Gen, since the first quote is around 4.5K, plus all the other expenses will be stretched to over 5K+

Thank you any comments/advice will be greatly appreciated.

Regards

I would go back to the dealer who did the work. Seems funny the car ran with no issues until 5 days after it failed, just after some work had been done 🤔 My guess would be it was not filled with enough oil, overheated and failed.

You could drain all the oil out of the Haldex and it would not come to any harm, it would not function but would not be harmed.

Some people frequently get holes mixed up, there may be laws against it when it comes to anatomy but they can still indulge themselves in the workshop, drain the diff oil out and in most reported cases it has gone bang after a few days/200 miles without warning.

Haldex is very reliable as long as its kept away from the main stealers because on their planet it does not have a filter.

Also keep it away from people who are not very discriminatory about which hole they use :D

Has anyone on here carried out the oil and filter change? I would personally prefer to do the research and do the job properly myself where there is apparent uncertainty at dealerships and possibly independents.

Not knowing the arrangement, if it were to fail due to lack of servicing, what would be the effects? Loss of drive at all times? Or loss of functionality of the diff only?
