Octavia vs mondeo

They seem to call all Mondeos world cars. You would expect regional variations.

No,

The Mk1, 2, 3 and 4 was a Ford Europe design, a platform designed to be the best drivers car in the class and they were brilliant.

Ford USA had the Fusion which for the US was a different platform and a comfy highway cruiser, easy to drive and light controls.

For the Mk5 Ford could not let Europe have their own model which meant the USA Fusion and EU Mondeo would be the same.

The Platform was more Fusion biased so the EU Mondeo was compromised by it's Ford Fusion DNA.

I've owned many Mondeo's and enjoyed everyone, they were a class above anything for driving pleasure. The "World Car" for driving could be a Passat or new Insignia, it no longer has that driving USP.  Probably the Mazda 6 holds the large FWD saloon hatch title for driving feel.

Awesome, so we're nit-picking about a bit of motoring jargon now are we?

Have Ford not done away with their Australia only division as well, and now just sell their global range of cars in Oz. At the end of the day every single manufacturer is cost cutting in some way to the detriment of quality (perceived or otherwise) reliability, handling and performance. If you trawl your way through every manufacturers back catalogue every single one of them has howlers and really good stuff somewhere in there.

Really this whole thread has just turned into argument-fest over what was a fairly rediculous OP.

As far as some on here are concerned, whether you've owned 1 car or 100, you can only base your views on what you have experienced yourself. When it comes to as fickle a subject as cars you are always going to incite argument.

Might aswell start arguing Case v John Deere, or maybe delve into football rivalries, anyone up for that?

When I first drove the new Mondeo after owning many earlier models my thoughts were the same as this review

I actually bought a Passat.

Term was Global Car.

Skoda sell in Central and South America,  the United States / North America being just that,

It states SKODA WON'T BE COMING TO THE U.S. AFTER ALL. It never happened. Central America is not the U.S.A.:)

Fuel it, why not? Where did you find that? Newest  I can  find on autotrader is 2011, 1.6 ecoboost after!?  If there was and they were cheaper  I think it would have more than a little do with it being a mainstream model and not an ST, if it was an ST it would be a lot more valuable and sought after.  The Focus ST goes for a chunk more than a VRS. The RS for nigh on double.

I don’t buy second hand so not relative to me.

My guess was that it was not appealing due to basically being powerful enough to be costly to run, without being quick enough to justify it.

For me that certainly doesn't appeal, nor do the lesser power models.

The focus would.  If the boot was bigger and it didn't look so chavvy.

The Focus still drives well, better than the Octavia but the centre console looks really cheap and nasty. Saying that, that will be the last years model I tried not the brand new one.

I purchased a new Mk1 Focus after it was launched and I saw it at the NEC motorshow, would have been 1999 I think. Only a 1.8 petrol but it was a revelation compared to the Escort/Astra/Golf of the time. Later had the Mk1 2.0ESP as my daily and at the same time a Prodrive Subaru Impreza Series McRae, the Focus was nowhere near as quick but probably handled better down a B Road.

Modern cars don't even get close to that balance and feel.

Unfortunately, modern cars are too tech filled, insulated and remote.

They're more practical and easy to live with but largely more boring.

Hence why I'm keeping my '99 Honda.  It just 'feels' fun.

Teescom09:

Surely you would agree that the are going to be wildly diversive opinions regarding any product/service from any market sector based on what ever experiences the respective customer has had.

As an example; you could have 1 man who has owned 10 Fords, has enjoyed them and had good service from them, he will be delighted with his Fords. Your next man may only have owned 1 Ford, but if he has had an awful experience with it he will have a negative view of the brand.

It's just the nature of consumerism.

You can make the quicker, firmer and stop better.

But you won't get the feel of of an old analogue chassis without electric power steering.

How about this for really getting back to basics, no electric power steering here, although steering still as numb as stone...

Latest spy shots released 2021MY skoda octavia, no dpf issues or battery charging to worry about.

Followed by Fords latest fully organic model, I can't wait for the group test comparison. This is the fully loaded model aswell with auto steer and guide you home, also self refuels and latest range extender technology, available at any roadside verge. Along with the most alive steering on the market.

Some are now good, like BMW, Ford and Jag.  anothrt one of vag’s weakness though, most are totally numb.

You need to drive a 245 with the wider rear track, 2.1 turns lock to lock faster steering and big ventilated brakes (340mm front/310mm rear). Nothing half hearted about this performance machine.:)

Just a modified car. Not interested in modified cars. I have a very high performance standard car.  I doubt any of that would do anything for the steering feedback which is the Achilles heel of VAG. Always a criticism in nearly all tests and mine also.

It's fast yes.

I've owned faster so yes I have an idea on the performance level.

That's not the point of feel and balance.

Drive an original MX5 for comparison. Not that quick but the chassis feels alive and the steering makes your arms feel like they are connected to the front wheels. Light, perfect weight distribution, hydraulic power steering.

You don't get that from any modern front wheel drive, transverse engined cars with electric power steering.

So it scored 20 out of 30 and understeers like a boat in rough seas.;)

Yes I agreed with the reviewers.

Mk1, 2, 3, and 4 Ford Europe Mondeo's were great.

The Global/World Mk5 Mondeo was just another large saloon hatch so you may as well go for a Passat/Superb.
