Please help explain Error Codes

Featured Replies

Hi, new poster here.  I have a question related to error codes on a regularly serviced 2013 CTHE vRS with 60k miles on the clock.

Recently on a journey along the M4 from Bristol to London I had the amber "Control system for exhaust" light come on (an image of an engine).  I stopped at a service station for a coffee and when I started up again, the light had gone off and stayed off for the rest of the journey.  The car seemed to behave normally, it didn't go into "Limp mode".  I tend to drive within the speed limit almost all of the time and I don't thrash the car.

I booked the car into my local dealer for diagnosis of the fault.  They kept calling the fault light the "Engine management system" for some reason; however that isn't my question.

The report suggests that there have been intermittent misfires detected at random times on each of the four cylinders for quite a while, they have cleared the fault log.  They said that there was no loss of compression on the engine - which is a relief.  I have a report listing some of the fault details, the dates and the times.

When I asked what the cause of the misfires might be they said that they couldn't tell without further checks but they would start by looking at the spark plugs and then the coil packs.  I had new (Denso) spark plugs fitted about two and a half years ago.  I typically use 97 RON fuel although from time to time I have used Tesco 99 RON and as it happens I had recently filled up with Shell 99 RON - I have used both of these latter fuels in the past, apparently without problems.  "The car is not an "Oil burner".

Does anyone have any idea as to what the cause of the misfires might be?

Welcome.

?

Were you using Cruise Control?

The DENSO plugs should have been removed and inspected because 2 1/2 years ago is a long time.

How many miles have they been in for.

?

Did they not check the spark plugs or replace them when the car was in then?

*** If doing a compression test the plugs are out.***

?

How much did you pay for the diagnostics / check?

***They have achieved nothing it would appear.***

Possibly you will be needing a new Water Pump / Magnetic Supercharger Clutch at some point.

& both belts replaced.

There is the 'Engine light' which is the Exhaust Emissions Control light, and the EPC light,

The engine light can come on rather easily, misfires enough in a cycle to log, and even not enough to log a code.

(I would not use Shell V-Power Nitro+ with Long Life Oil, VW504, 5w30 FS III.)

Tesco Momentum 99 has detergents as well but my theory is less chance of borewash, thats another subject though.

The EPC light can also come on with Misfires, or the Water Pump on the way out,

That can put the car in Limp Mode, and both lights can come on.

The front down pipe bracket can break, you can get a slight leak, the joint under the passengers seat can leak, these can have the Engine Light come on.

Bottom pick.

This is on the exhaust under the passengers seat. Check no blowing there.

Thanks :)

I was not using Cruise Control - it isn't fitted.

I will get the Denso plugs replaced at my local dealership - which I trust.

Any other suggestions?

I would get the 4 spark plugs removed & replaced by the trusted dealership.  Kept in order and inspected closely.

See how they are, and if one is bad i would be wanting whatever was paid to the other dealership refunded.

?

What did they charge you?

?

What actual Denso plugs are fitted, how many miles ago, and by whom?

I will take your sensible advice about changing the spark plugs.  It seems that they were actually changed in December 2016 - how time flies!

I can't be sure what Denso plugs they are without having them removed but I suspect that they were probably SKJ20CR-A8#4.

The Skoda garage also made recommendations about:

  • Servicing the air conditioning - £139
  • Servicing the brake fluid - £99
  • Replacing the front disks - £405
  • Replacing the rear disks - £320
  • Replacing the rear disk pads - £48

I will attend to all these in the near future but probably not at a Skoda garage - I would also change the front disk pads at the same time as changing the disks.

Skoda UK has Fixed Price Servicing at Participating Dealerships on cars 3-10 years old on fixed servicing.

The Brake Fluid change is £60 at a Service.

Never gets Discs replaced by them.

A set of 4 Discs & Pads in around £140.  Get them fitted at an Independent.  Maybe they will take £100-£150 to fit and then the £140 parts.

Doubt you need the AC Serviced.

Sometime Skoda DEalerships have a Brake Fluid and A/C service for arounf £99.

You want maybe to change the Pollen Filter, check the Air Filter and change if needed.

The Oil & Filter change and health check is an Offer at £119.

Brake Service the £60.

******* Note A/C Service cost on pre 2016 cars. £79 not £139.*******

Someone at the dealership is taking the pith.

Brake Fluid change is at 3 years then each 2 years,

but then the brake fluid can be checked for H20 content.

Not particularly - just one more thing to go wrong . . . now if you were offering a Tesla, that would be different!

OMG.................!!!! bend you over and ram a large pole up there whilst at it!!!

what a rip off!!!

Kwik fit can do the aircon for £45 (if it needs it) you cant "service" airconditioning, its drained, vac'd and refilled, all done by a machine, only need a mechanic to start it going then he can have a cup of tea for 30 mins.........

Brake fluid change 1 litre of fluid "max" and 20 mins work....

Are those ceramic brake disks!!!!! jeeezz  you can do the lot for less than the price of the rears and have change !!!...

@AllDaySkoda - Name and shame the cowboys who recommended replacing discs and not pads.

Holy smokes.......£872 for brakes all round, That's the same price as a decent big brake setup!

In terms of changing brakes, These 5J fabia's are simple and no fancy tools needed. I feel confident in saying the you can do the brakes yourself for less that £300

The lot,

£165 including VAT at your local Motor Factors.

Thanks for that, I can't find/read the part numbers, would you be able to list them and I will price them up at EuroCarParts.
The Brake Fluid can probably be replaced at the same time as the garage  does the disks and pads.

I don't plan to do anything about the Air Con.

As a point of interest, I would always tend to stick to Castrol Edge 5W/40 FST - personal preference, I used to love the smell of Castrol 'R' back in the day :)

Let the garage get the parts from the Motor Factor they use.

Or put your Reg Number in a online sellers site. It is just a Mk2 Fabia vRS 1.4 TSI.

From personal experience i stick to 5w 40 FS to VW 502 from ASDA , Comma or anyone, and swerve Castrol.

Not to save money, just because that is all that is needed.  (I would never use Long Life oil in a TSI.

I love the smell of Castrol 'R' as well but the over hyped crap oil from Castrol the same as anyone elses in nothing special IMO.
