Key won't unlock manually or by remote

Featured Replies

My Fabia wouldn't lock with the remote with either of my keys so I put the key in the manual keyhole under the flap in the handle and I could lock the door. Now I can' unlock the doors either with the remote buttons or by manually turning the key, The red light on the drivers door seems to recognise that I am using the key as it hesitates but nothing else seems to happen. I've tried most of the fixes on line and none of them are working. Any suggestions please or am I off to the dealer? Many thanks,

If you put the key in the hidden door keyhole and turn it anticlockwise, does this unlock the door.

If it does, is it only the drivers door that opens, and the red alarm light might still be flashing on.

You might then need to open the door, and if the alarm goes off you put the key in the ignition and turn it on.

If the key doesn't work, I am assuming you are walking to the dealer? 🙄

Many thanks AGFalco for your reply. Unfortunately I can't get the drivers door open even using the key manually. Other posts suggest the key should be button side up but it doesn't turn at all that way up. Button side down the key will turn in both directions but does absolutely nothing. I haven't got a plan for getting the car to the dealers yet - I live 30 miles away from the nearest one and I'm not even sure how it could be put on a trailer as it's in Park with hand break on! Just glad I haven't locked anything valuable in it.

Either way up should work.

Is the key bent?

If the car still in Warranty then call Skoda Assistance 24 hours a day on 0800 526 625

The car is just out of warranty - of course!! - neither key is working so it has to be something in the electronics I think. It's going to be something simple or something expensive - think I know which one knowing my luck with cars! Thanks for suggestions and I'm happy to try anything - holy water, rain dance - was supposed to be going to a funeral tomorrow now don't think I'll be going.

Using the key in the door lock is just mechanical, for that door.

Check to see if the door is fully closed?

Then try both keys in both directions.

This suggests mechanical to me as the key should work both ways up.

Well - this morning managed to get the drivers door to unlock manually but then I went into the settings and did a factory reset for the locking settings. The key could then manually lock and unlock all doors. After speaking to my dealer he suggested changing the key battery as it would be expensive if I needed keys to be re-programmed. I did that despite it seeming impossible that both batteries could have failed at the same time. Hey Presto - both keys now work remotely... That seems extremely odd to me - guess I'll have to make sure I keep spare key batteries to hand. Many thanks for all the helpful suggestions though.

I had both keys batteries die on me too, about 1 month after picking up the car... Had a stone chip repaired and left the one key with the autoglass guy in the car park at my work. After he left and I went to grab the hanger thing he'd put on the mirror it wouldn't unlock. Went home and grabbed the other key and the pack of batteries I'd purchased (I like to be prepared) and that one was dead too. Replaced both batteries and the car unlocked. I never tried it manually with the key though, but its a bit crazy if that's the case!

I had no warnings from the car, and the batteries were non brand cheapo ones from a pound shop or such like. Put a pair of varta ones in, no problems so far.

In terms of reprogramming, its all in the manual on how to resync the keys and its pretty easy so that's not really an issue as far as I know.

Both batteries are the same age?

Was the red led light on the key fob lighting up when you pushed the buttons with the old batteries?

Well done on getting in the car.

  • 5 years later...

Just reading this old thread as am having C/L issues myself today.

Front passenger door has not responded to fob for a couple of years...have had to open it manually from inside on occasions it is needed (and lock it manually with the white nylon insert in the door frame). Asked garage to fix when it went for MOT in January said part (actuator?) was on back order..he was also waiting for one for another customer. Not a problem as all other doors and tailgate open and lock on fob.

Today, out of the blue, the front driver's door did not unlock on key fob press...had to open driver's door manually with the door lever via rear door and a stretch!

Fob press locks the driver's door , the 2 rear doors and tailgate.

Took off the plastic key lock cap on driver's door as per manual. Would not turn...turned key around in barrel so buttons down/Skoda badge up..fully inserted key..worked fine and opened driver's door (and the 2 rears&tailgate manually)

I noticed that putting the key in buttons up/Skoda badge facing down the fob fouls the door pull just by a couple of mm so the key will not fully insert and work. Hope this observation may help someone.

Octavia Scout 2018.

p.s. God knows what the fault is with the central (un) locking function using the fob..two actuators down?..or something else. Would be interested to hear people's thoughts on that. Thanks for reading.

Noted for the future, thanks, I really should check the lock barrel operation in my wife's 2015 VW Polo - and my 2011 Audi S4, something that we all could consider doing before we need to use it!
