Tesco Momentum 99 and 1.4Tsi

Featured Replies

Sorry to revive an older topic. I was near Tesco today and found out that Momentum 99 E5 was 129p, only 5p a litre above the 95 octane. There are no Shell garages nearby to try V Power. Put 1/2 tank of 99 in and as reported elsewhere,  the acceleration at lower revs is subjectively brisker- rather like my old 2l turbo diesel.

Anyone else currently using this fuel in a 1.4tsi or have useful experiences with it

My 2.0 TSI definitely preferred Momentum over 95ron, as does the same engine in my GTI now.  The difference was even more noticeable in my old 1.5 CRX, which was flat as a pancake on 95.

Momentum gets the 👍 from me.

Gaz

I love Momentum in my 1.4tsi Superb II - feels much perkier especially at lower revs.  On 95 RON cheper petrol (especially in France) with the windows down on a hot day I can hear a touch of pinking when going uphill - this doesn't happen when running on higher octane petrol.

With Mrs BJ 's Fiat Panda 1.2 Momentum doesn't really make any difference though.

it all depends on whether the car is able to adjust the timings to suit the fuel. If it is able to, then you're going to see a benefit. If it can't, you're only going to get the benefit of the additives.

They did a test on fifth gear a while ago with shell optimax (shows how long ago it was), BP ultimate and supermarket fuel. The Clio couldn't make use of the better fuel, a GTI got 5hp than the supermarket and a scooby got 14hp more. Both of the increased figures were with shell. BP did increase but not by as much.

It's just a case of run your car down to fumes throw a tank of the good stuff in and see what happens.

I run on either Shell V or Momentum from my local Tesco.  To be honest, I can see little or no difference under normal driving conditions.  2017 Octavia 1.5TSI.

You have time though while the car runs smoothly to think that the Tesco Momentum 99 was just about £2.25 more when filling up than their 95 ron,

and maybe no more expensive than Shell Fuel Saver 95 ron, and that the Shell V-Power Nitro + when used could have cost anoth £3 more to fill up than if you had bought the Momentum.

Mony a mickle macs a muckle.    Sainburys 97 ron min Super Unleaded can cost less than the main brands 95 ron, and just 5 pence a litre more than Sainburys

95 unleaded.

Over the years here's my experience with leaded (95) and super unleaded (97-99) on the cars me & my wife have owned:

Audi S3 1.8T 275 (tuned)- ran much better on super unleaded

Audi S4 4.2V8 330 - ran much better and noticeably more power on super unleaded

Audi RS4 4.2V8 420 - ran much better, better mpg (lower sulphur content so less cat purging) and noticeably more power on super unleaded

Skoda Fabia 1.2 Mk1 78? - no difference

Citroen C11.0 68 - no difference

Skoda Octavia 1.4TSI 140 - slightly smoother and more responsive in Sport mode on super unleaded

More highly tuned engines are more sensitive to the octane rating.

The 1.4tsi has got variable valve and injection timing and does respond to octane changes afaik.

Hmm are you saying the 1.4 does not have knock detection? That would be a surprise to me.

No, I did not say that. Just the opposite.

Gregoir.🤔

I always fill up both cars with Tesco momentum if I pass a Tesco (which isn't very often where I live), as said, it's no dearer than "ordinary" petrol at most stations. I'm sure both cars feel better on it,  but I do fully understand the placebo effect......!

Yeh, tried it some years ago when Shell were running a special promotion on their v-power. The only difference I noticed was on my end of month credit card statement.

What I'd like to see is two identical cars - one filled with 95Ron, the other 99Ron and then ask people to say which fuel is in which.

Better still, what I'd really like to see is two identical cars, both filled with the same fuel, but tell the driver one is 95Ron and the other is 99Ron and ask them to differentiate.

To the best of my knowledge nobody has carried out such a test. You'd think perhaps the fuel suppliers would have to promote their more expensive fuel but nope - no 8 out of 10 car owners prefer Pedigree Chum on this occasion.

I think the 1.4 tsi is a great engine, I’ve got one and always run it on 95 ron mainly from supermarkets. No issues with how it runs or the performance.
99 Ron must be better, it’s a higher octane rating, but the engine tuning and compression ratio are built for 95 ron so any improvement is marginal. If  I want to go faster I press down harder on the accelerator.
If you need even more performance it’s time for a car with a bigger engine.

I agree, mine is fast enough on 95RON.

But the difference at lower revs with the Momentum  is noticeable.👹

There are drivers of Euro 5 1.4 TSI Twinchargers 180 ps that will tell you the difference is noticeable with Super Unleaded, but then 98 Super is the recommended fuel for them. Obviously they need to be able to run on 95 ron.

Others might well say they see and feel no difference.

Maybe it is just lower emissions, but that is OK.   If you have a remap and a switchable one then knowing when it is not running Super Unleaded can be pretty obvious.

The VW Webpage for Owners / help for fuels where they recommended 98 Super for VW GTI's has gone recently.

I’ll let mine get close to empty, then next time I fill up I’ll give it a try.

After 60,000 miles eating chicken&pasta my engine can have a meal of steak !

(Don’t want to spoil it though, it’s back to bland after that 😀)

@gregoir I probably did more with the little 1.4TSI than most when I had mine, air intake, Tuningbox, Pedalbox & various fuels.

Its ran best on Momentum 99ron fuel, rolled at 203bhp & 321Nm which for the earlier 140bhp version I felt was good enough without throwing silly money at it. vPower was down at 201bhp due to the cleaning additives.
