Brake noise in cold wheather

Featured Replies

Just to compare, do you people in cold areas experiance knocking noise from brakes when you start driving, especially when hill hold activates, also wear noise until pads/discs clear? Also after parking a car after couple of hours on handbrake rear brakes lock up for a second before car moves? In garage they say it is normal, for me it is a little bit too much, during summer and after some braking it is not present. In OBDeleven there is option to activate disc brake drying, some more info?

As the garage said, it's normal due to metal corrosion on the disc and the evidence of rust.

Where the disc pads are in contact with the disc and held under pressure i.e the parking brake applied the battery effect of dissimilar metals creates corrosion and results in the pad sticking to the disc. The thud/ bang can be heard when the disc and pad break the bond.

I don't know how Obdeleven would activate the disc drying other than actuating the brakes somehow.

How cold are we talking.  I don't know enough about Croatia's weather to say if its significantly colder than majority of UK.  Could be why many on here wouldn't have this.

It was not lower then 2C, on my previous cars  sticking of handbrake didn't happen so easy.

Sticking can be explained by this, still it happens too fast in my opinion. But it doesn't explain knocking of brakes when car stops on hill. BTW hill hold works over ABS on all 4 brakes what I learned recently.

According OBDeleven text disc braking is normally on but it is possible to adjust intensity?

Please excuse my post FrankLK. Your posting describes a series of problems. Mine just touched on one and realising your car is a L&K with an electric parking brake and hill hold I understand the other problems you're experiencing.

No autohold, normal handbrake and hillhold. L&K is no difference from other trims in that.

Oh dear sorry . 🙄 !

@FrankLK Its fairly normal. I get this quite a lot in the winter after its rained all night, been particularly damp or I've washed the car straight after using it, especially so with the left hand rear brake as it is facing the direction the weather heads in from. If its been really heavily raining and the car was parked up with hot discs, the surface corrosion and drive away issues are worse but they clear quite quickly, usually after the first bit of braking. Also, the release thud from the rear brakes is worse if the handbrake was left on quite tight beforehand.

The knocking noise I get is from the clean area of the discs that were protected by the pads coming back past them again but only for the first few brake applications whilst clearing the surface corrosion. Any noise or judder after 10 mins of driving would be something else that needs looking at.

I had the same with my previous cars as well, Golf iv GTi, Leon Cupra R Mk1, and Saab Turbo X. All the same.

Yes I have the same, I can blame poor sound insulation to hear this noises, It looks to me that the pads are of harder material because the brake dust on wheels is minor. Luckily I don't live in cold area because this would drive me mad every day🙄

You also get thuds on hill braking before the discs are cleaned?

Not normally as they have cleaned up by the time I get to the closest hill in my location. Braking is a bit jerky on first use.

Past couple of mornings has required deicing the car, but I can't say I noticed any noises coming from any part of the braking system.

Only time I hear any noise of note is when I first use the car after either I've washed the car or it's been sat for a day in heavy rain. That'll just be the corrosion getting wiped away as described above.
