Which brake discs do I need for my Octavia?

Recommended Posts

Just got back from a service after being told my rear brake discs are dangerously low. I’m thinking I’m going to buy them myself and ask my local mechanic to fit them rather than pay dealership prices.

I’ve been onto a few sites and found some discs but not sure which exact ones I need because it says to check the fitment, and the specifications are not all identical.

Can anyone tell me which discs I need? And any recommendations on a brand?

First maybe visit the local mechanic and ask if you need new rear discs and pads.

They might tell you which local Motor Factor to go to and get the parts, or they can with their trade discount and have the usual dropped off at them with the other parts they get in.

Book figure for a 1.6 TDi is 288x25mm front 272x10mm rears but not difficult to check with a wire coat hanger or cardboard through the spokes. I don't think any early cars had the 255mm rear, but easy to check between the 2 sizes

My preference is ATE pads, Brembo or ATE disks. Pagid are OK too. Lots of opinion on here about this if you search.

As above get a second opinion if you cannot check yourself, I have had 'dangerously low' brakes from a dealer less than half worn.

I'd also get a reliable person to check the wear or check it yourself. Dealerships are always trying to sell discs and pads.

I had BMW tell me all mine were dangerously low once after them only doing a health check 4 weeks previous where they weren't even commented on. It was ok though because they said they could get them all replaced immediately for £1200. Needless to say they lasted miles longer than that.

I once had an MOT garage tell me my wife's car needed new discs - I checked them for runout, etc - although they had some slight "grooving" on the surface and there was a slight (1 or 2mm) lip on the outside edge, they were fine! Cue change of MOT venue. Those same discs were still passing MOT checks three years later at our local garage.

Unfortunately, some operators regard unnecessary disc replacement as a cash cow, banking on the average owner not knowing what is safe.

Thanks. That’s very helpful. I will call the dealership to check. I’ve found some Brembo’s online for £80 a pair so will go with those.

You were told your discs are dangerously Low.  Sure your pads aren't dangerously  low. The discs would be worn, that's how I would describe it. Also £80 is a bit steep for rear discs, the rears don't do a lot of work not like the front. I've had no problems with semi budget ones on the rear. Its not like you've got a vrs.

I just called the dealership. They seemed bemused to get such a parts information request, which I thought was strange. But he did take my reg and tell me I needed the 255mm discs, so I guess I'm in the minority of people with those.

I'm going to buy the parts myself and take them to my local VAG specialist mechanic. I'll get the coolant myself too. My tank says G13. Anyone know if it makes a difference if I get the purple one? ECP have it at a pretty good price, but I'm sure the coolant in it was originally pink.

  • 3 weeks later...

I purchased Brembo discs and pads from Euro car parts - I got the fitted at F1 auto centre, the fitted front and back for £65 including vat! absolute steal - parts and labour I think was about £350 all in.

Recently replaced my rear discs and pads having looked up the correct caliper type from the service book.

On the inside cover of my service book I found the sticker which listed out the various codes of my car and the 4th or 5th pair of digits on mine is 1KD which if you can cross-reference with the Euro Car Parts items, under the "Fitment Detail" section.

On mine the rear discs were £40 and the pads about £10.

Hope that helps.
