Can't stop turn indicators tripple flash

Featured Replies

Just bought my first Skoda, a 2016 Fabia Monte Carlo TSI, and very nice it is too.

As usual, with practically any engineering product today, the thing that baffles and frustrates from the outset is all the electronics. Why do they do it?

In this case the thing that baffles and frustrates me is this: one flick of the indicator lever gives three flashes of the turn indicator lamps. I want to stop this, so that it works just like a dumb indicator control, and gives me just a single flash when I flick it.

I believe this three-flash feature has a name in the user guide book, but I can't remember what it is.

Despite a lengthy and diligent search through the various user guides,  I can find no way to achieve my objective.

I can easily get to a screen titled "Factory Settings". See picture.

The third menu item on this screen says "Reset individual settings/data", which looks to be the place to make the change I want, but I could be totally wrong!

However, when I twiddle the knob to select this menu item and explore further, the selection frame simply skips over it. ie. it skips directly from the second menu item (Restore Factory Settings) to the fourth menu item (Sound).

There appears to be no way to select this menu item, regardless of the position of the ignition key.

Any help gratefully received!

Thanks Roottootemblowinootsoot, but your link appears to refer to a system called VCDS and all the posts appear to be several years older than my car, and not applicable to it! The videos show a set of screens totally unlike anything I see in my own car.

I posted that because i think your car needs plugged into the correct equipment to make the changes.

If someone knows otherwise they can tell you.

The latest models allow the 'Comfort Indicators' to be adjusted by the driver via the infotainment system, earlier models, such as your Fabia require the car to be plugged into a diagnostics system.

You might find you get used to the three flashes, especially if you spend time on dual carriageways or motorways, almost all modern cars utilise this feature now. I wouldn't be without it.

In the meantime for a single flash you need to fully flick the indicator stalk up or down, and then immediately cancel it.

Same here. I use it more than regular indicators tbh, I live in the land of roundabouts and its perfect for indicating off or for switching lanes like you mention. It was on my want list when purchasing a new car, after nearly 15 years of living with it i'd find it hard to give up on!

Another one for the comfort indicators, our octavia has it as does the st.

Thanks to all who have replied.

Sorry I didn't realise what VCDS was all about. I have done some research. Apparently, I can get a free download of VCDS, install on a laptop, connect to the car, and change some of the settings, including the one I am interested in.

This is a bit of a faff, to put it mildly, but I might give it a try. Is there any danger I will muck up the car electronics? I worry about this...!

Like so many things designed into the electronics of modern cars, the tripple blink is supposed to help me. But there is only one case where it actually helps, and that is a lane change on a motorway. As the car is rarely used on a motorway or dual carriageway, it's just a nuisance to me. I can see that some people like it. It's just that I don't, and I would like a simple way to turn my "smart" car into something a bit dummer.

But I still don't know why I can't select the menu item "Reset individual settings/data" - see above. Does anyone know?

If this menu item is not accessible to the driver, only a service person, why is it shown on the screen in the first place?

They only flash 3 times if you use the stalk, if you do not want to indicate just don not indicate.

When my wife got her new Polo back in 2002, and I had a 2000 Passat, I really did take to that function on the indictor switch - so I just had to get it on my 2000 Passat, there was an official retro fit kit that used an Audi B5 A4 relay and an extra cable form etc. I found it to be a bit annoying in my Passat initially but after a week or so it before okay and very useful. So ended up using it a lot, and still do on both our newer cars.

Hmm just a thought, but have you actually customised anything? maybe it only lets you if somethings changed 🤔 Have never tried.

If you are worried about the electrics getting messed up you can, in addition to the set and immediately cancel option already mentioned, try just a light touch on the indicator stalk so the arm does not actually "set" itself. I know you probably dont want to hear this but as an ex driving instructor and police traffic bobby [albeit about 200 years ago] I would prefer to keep the triple flash as the single flash could so easily be missed. However, I completley appreciate it is your choice. I hope you figure it out. R-

I have a 65 plate se l and theres a setting in the infotainment settings under lights i think it is, deffo there as i Accidentally turned it off and was lost with out it, loads easier having it. But if you look in your infotainment setting in car its there some where

And also by the looks of your pic your in the stereo menu, click on car and settings from that screen you will find loads of settings

Many thanks to all who responded, and especially to Matmacka.

I followed your tip and discovered the setting down in the menu structure under "Lights", and the car now behaves the way I want.

Thanks again!

If the entry isn't selectable, i.e. the cursor skips past the "Reset Individual settings/data" entry, then this feature isn't applicable / available on your car.

Individual settings usually relate to electrically adjustable memory seats or personalisation of two separate ignition key fobs etc. to suit differing seating and mirror positions of different drivers.

Thanks silver1011.

I guess my car doesn't have any of these fancy features, then!

My Monte does not do 3 flashes, is it not a "modern car"? it just flashes until I recentre the stalk

or I finish the turn then it cams off.

You just push it down partially then release, it flashes three times then goes off. If you push it all the way, it behaves like a regular indicator stalk as you describe. Maybe its an option you need to turn on in the infotainment unit?

Thank you, now I know (hopefully)

Pretty sure my mk1 fabia vrs had this, as did the mk2 I had along with the baseline model fiesta until this mk3 so I'd be suprised if your mk3 doesn't!
