What size wheels/tyres will fit to Superb III

Featured Replies

Looking for advice, will VW alloys with 255 45 18 fit my 2017 280 4x4. Not sure of the offset or how to identify the offset.

Thanks in advance.

  • Many Superb owners here in Oz have made the switch from 235/40/19 to 245/40/19 with no issues, even with lowering springs. It's cheaper n a more popular size. I'll b making the switch too fr

  • Now new set is in place. Size is 245/40R19. ET35.   Car needs wash&wax.

  • 245/45R18 on standard 8Jx18 ET44 rims is a good choice for looks and comfort. 245/45R18 is a more popular and economical size than 245/40R19. 245/45 on 8J rims better protect the rims from kerbing dam

A bit too large, I suspect.   This is the list of OEM sizes for your car.   I suggest going here and comparing your existing wheel and tyre setup with any new ones.   https://www.willtheyfit.com/

Maybe. Personally I'd be OK with the tyre size increase (2.6% increase in circumference, 18mm taller overall, so the car will sit 9mm higher), but the question is the wheel width and offset. Both should be stamped on the inner side of the wheel spokes. Should be something like 18x8.5J (diameter x width) and ET40 (offset).

38 should be fine. I have 20mm spacers in the back taking my stock et44 to 24.

Hello MarkyG82,

do you have some pics of this? Thanks!

Hi.

Sorry for thread revival but I was wondering if you guys could advise?

I've ordered Damina alloys this morning before I realised that there could be issues (seller assured me there won't be any but they always do.)

The alloys are DAMINA PERFORMANCE DM18 8,5x20 5x112 ET30 Bronze Matt

So my first question is: Is ET 30 x 8.5J still acceptable for Superb 2018 2.0TDI?

If so, what tyres can I use?

Ideally I'd go for 245 but I'm cautious this could be a no go.

Does anyone have 8,5x20 ET30 Rims installed and if so what tyres do you have?

Thank you very much for help

This is how they should look like

It will fit and function just fine.  You'll need to select tyre size well though.  Assuming 235 wide, you'll need 35 profile which is very low.  I hope you don't have rough roads or potholes to drive through.

I currently drive on 19 inch Vega's with  235/40/19 tyres so profile will go down only by 5. I'm sure there will be potholes but I just couldn't resist the urge when I saw these alloys.
I think 235 witdh is going to be the safest bet after all.

Thank you

As you can see in the chart below, the 235/35R20 tyre size has a 12.5% smaller sidewall height than the 235/40R19 tyre size.

Sidewall height

235/40R19 94mm

235/35R20 82.25mm (12.5% smaller sidewall height)

As you can see in the chart below, the 235/40R19 has a 12.5% bigger standard load index. This means that if you use 32psi with the 235/40R19 tyre size you would have to use about 36psi with the 235/35R20 tyre size. Comparing the eXtra Load index of the two tyre sizes gives a similar 12.7% increase for the higher sidewalled tyre.

Even if you didn't use the extra 4psi with the lower sidewalled tyre, the ride would feel harder than the higher sidewalled tyre...so with the additional 4psi the ride is going to feel a lot harder.

Additionally, you are using a 0.5" wider 8.5J rim instead of the standard 8J rim that the 235/40R19 tyre size uses which again makes the ride even harder because the relatively wider rim will make the sidewalls less easy to flex when going over bumps in the road.

Fortunately, the Superb MK3 does come with quite soft suspension so that is going to help the ride a lot.

Standard Load index (SL)

235/40R19 92 (630kg) (12.5% bigger standard load index)

235/35R20 88 (560kg)

eXtra Load index (XL)

235/40R19 96 (710kg) (12.7% bigger extra load index)

235/35R20 92 (630kg)

So to sum up, going from a 235/40R19 to a 235/35R20 is not a small change.

Thread is not active for long but lets try.

Anyone knows can I fit Octavia mk3 rims 6J x 17 et48 on my superb mk3 2.0tdi? I have tyres 215/55/17 which are 6,5J but my concern is on ET cause on superb its 40, and this Octavia rims are 48. Cheers.

With ET48, those bicycle skinny 6" wide wheels will disappear deep inside the wheel arch of the Superb!!

It will look horrible!

Assuming that it clears the brake calipers.

On the Superb MK3, the 215/55R17 tyre size is usually fitted to either 6.5Jx17 ET41 or 7Jx17 ET40.

So compared to 6.5Jx17 ET41, the 6Jx17 ET48 rim is 0.5" narrower and the offset if 7mm greater.

This could be useful if you drive in an area with lots of 2 metre width restrictions because the front and rear track if measured on the outside of the rims is reduced by 26.7mm when changing from 6.5Jx17 ET41 to 6Jx17 ET48 rims or 41.4mm when changing from 7Jx17 ET40 rims to 6Jx17 ET48 rims. When changing from 8Jx18 ET44 or 8Jx19 ET44 rims to 6Jx17 ET48 the reduction in front and rear track if measured on the outside of the rims is even greater at 58.8mm.

With a wide car like the Superb MK3 on standard rims, it can be very easy to damage the alloy rims when going through these narrow width restrictions.

For even more ride comfort, also consider oversize 215/60R17 on these rims. The front wheel drive Karoq also fits its 215/60 tyres (albeit 16") to narrow 6J rims.

Thanks. Well its a winter set, so I really dont care about estetics. I'm just concerned will it rub anywhere?!

Now I'm considering iron rims. Budget option.

Yes those are the option.

Will it rub anywhere?

As you can see in the chart below, the actual inflated width of the standard 235/45R18 fitted to its 8J rim is 22mm wider (ie. 11mm wider each side) than the 215/55R17 fitted to its 6J rim...so although the centre of the ET48 rim is pushed into the wheelarch by 4mm more than the ET44 rim, that 11mm of extra clearance means that there is 7mm of extra clearance. So no chance of rubbing.

Actual inflated width of tyre (measured from sidewall to sidewall, at the widest point)

215/55R17 fitted to 6Jx17 ET48 214mm

235/45R18 fitted to 8Jx18 ET44 236mm

One benefit of fitting 215/55R17 to relatively narrow 6J rims is that the rim gets a lot of protection from kerbing damage because the sidewalls bulge out by 18.8mm each side. 18.8mm is huge. By comparison the sidewalls on the 235/45R18 fitted to its 8J rim only bulge out by 4.4mm each side, thereby providing the rims with very little protection from kerbing damage.

Carlston, you are very well prepared among a gazillion posts, very precise.

I was thinking to fit winter tires going for 225/55-17 (not 215/55), however above you mention 215/60 as a possible fit. Is it a possible fit without rubbing?

I would be afraid of having too big of a 'barge effect', considering already the dynamics of the Superb's suspension are not excellent ... even though I don't drop it in the twisties.

I would not mind a taller tire. Rims are the 'classic' Stratos, on 17x7 ET40.

Indeed he is. His advice on 20 inch 35m profile tyres was very helpful although the ride is not as bad as I thought it would be. Probably soft suspension as he said

On the powerful Superb MK3 4x4 280HP, 225/55R17 on 7Jx17 ET40 rims would probably make more sense than 215/60R17.

Yes, you both are certainly right 😉

Thanks. This is elaboration at its best.

i have question if some PCD 5x112 rims from other cars like audi, bmw, mercedes will fit on superb ?

what to look for ?

of course i need to watch for Einpresstiefe

but what about center bore size for example?

thanks

I have a set of Audi le mans 19 on my passat that the previous guy had on a superb.  Pretty certain if it's MQB they will fit.

Look for alloy rims from similar cars in the VAG brands, ie. Audi, Seat, Skoda, VW. However, some cars such as big Audis have gone over to a bigger centre bore than 57.1mm so you need to make sure that the whole specification of the rim is suitable.

One car that should have suitable alloy rims is the Passat B8 because it's similar to the Superb MK3.

BMW and Mercedes are unlikely to fit. 5/112 and 57.1 are non-negotiable unless you start using BCD (Bolt Circle Diameter) adaptors and centre bore adaptors, ie. spigots. Then you need a suitable rim diameter, rim width, and offset.

Standard alloy rims on the Superb MK3

6.5Jx16 ET41 5/112 57.1

6.5Jx17 ET41 5/112 57.1

7Jx17 ET40 5/112 57.1

8Jx18 ET44 5/112 57.1

8Jx19 ET44 5/112 57.1

I got a good deal on a set of Goodyear UG Perf 3 on 225/55-17 and this is what I will use.

Hope to gather also relevant feeling about how the 280 performs with a 'downsized' from the summer 19s, which are at the end, so I will think what to do for next year, whether to downgrade to say 18s rims or to keep the 19s.
