I would normally get a pal round and we would have a look but cant do that either  because of social distancing

Does your pal live close enough to get round to yours safely........and without worrying anyone else.

I get social distancing, but you don't have to hold (assuming) his) hand whilst he has a look, do you. You can still each keep your distance.

Plenty of mechanics round our way still working.

They're already wearing gloves and often masks, so a full noddy suit is no great hassle, and someone needs to keep the keyworker vehicles on the road.

They just keep 2m distant or more, and carry on as before. Some even offer sanitizing services.

----- and at the end of the day maybe this car just needs a brake service, something that warranties don't cover, not does it seem to be included as part of standard VW Group services in my experience, so if it is just that, that is an extra charge bit or work needing doing.

Many savvy owners sort out or get their brakes sorted out every 2 years.

Personally I don't like being trapped by new car warranties and used car warranties even from the manufacturer can be not too good, but they do tend to work for big problems, so I like others accept them, but feel a lot better once the warranty period has passed.

Surrey      John, , If you have a warranty fault you must get a diagnosis first before anything can happen. If the diagnosis says its a warranty fault then you need to book the car in again to have it fixed for free. Thats two separate visits to the dealer to get one fault fixed. Its my understanding that the diagnostic tool used can be used to give a complete diagnosis but in practice it is used to identify one particular problem.

That is not what I said.   I was refering to fixing faults, not making  a visit to decide who pays for it.

For many faults if the customer can describe it correctly (and the service staff have experience (or sometimes these check with the mechanic) the decision is made over the phone.

Not always possible, and since there are fewer dealers, usually more painful to expect customer twice, especially as most parts are available overnight, so easier simply to book it in for 2 days, especially if live fair distance away

This is just to say my friend and I did have a look at the front brakes. There was nothing stuck between calipers    so that really  easy fix wasnt on mores the pity. The discs looked OK  so we gave everything a good clean up and it improved a bit but it hadnt disappeared on a test drive.  My friend then took the car out for a 3 or 4 mile drive( on open land near here I hasten to add)  and used the brakes really hard repeatedly. There didnt seem any point doing handbrake turns because the problem was at the front but my friend did a couple anyway. He took the wheel because he drives his own car much harder than I do. Its now   definitely much better and I can live with it. Because my mileage, like everyone else. is quite a bit lower for the foreseeable future, I guess the problem could come back but I will worry about that if and when it happens.

@hetty1  Good.  Hand Brake, J turns etc are not required during 'Italian Tune Ups.'  Just lightly applying the Parking Brake / Hand Brake.

(Luckily you have not got an e-brake which is interesting to say the least when using depending on speed and surface if trying to clean off cosmetic rust from the rears. Taking the wheels off and using steel wool to clean them is less dramatic!)
