Hello. It's rainy today and having available my little fabia (I'm not it's everyday driver!) and the roads are so empty (!) I tried a little bit harder the ASR. I have read a lot in the past and there is a dispute for the efficiency of the system. For me, it worked like charm! Pairing with the EDL, it made a great difference. Starting moving from zero, having floored the acceleration pedal, the wheels just made a little spinning and then the car was boosted ahead as the tyres gained grip. Trying the same with the ASR off, I couldn't make it move. So, it proves it is quite a useful tool. Of course I don't need a cpu to tell me how to start a car on the wet but it is absolutely safe as it seems to do what it is supposed to do. It showed me that when it kicked in, taking no other actions from me (to control the spinning), it managed to do the job. If it was switched off, the car simply couldn't accelerate.

I find it maddening along with the ABS, at least i can switch it off unlike the ABS.

Wow, I never knew a model this old had EDL. I wonder how difficult it would be to retrofit this? I'm guessing it would be more than a new ABS pump though

I don't know if it could realistically be retrofitted. But I guess it could be. EDL is part of the ABS, no extra sensors needed. I think it has to be with the version of the ABS by itself. So does the ASR. Is the ESP that needs a lot of extra bits to be retrofitted. As for ASR, I don't know, though if it has to be supported by the ECU since it has to control the throttle body.

Learnt to drive without any driver aids, hard to unlearn that which is instinctive. I can stop faster when the ABS doesn't try and kick in.

EDL is a load of rubbish all it does is cook the brakes.

I had read some articles when the ABS had started to be a more common feature. They said that when the corner comes and is a hard braking time, doing so without ABS the wheels will be blocked and the car will go straight forward out of the desired direction. Doing the same with ABS - they stated - is absolutely safe due to no lost grip. Yeah, right... No system can alter the physics lows. Brake hard inside the curve and you will see your tail bypassing you!!! Unfortunately, same crap is taught to the learners instead of learning them true life...

User manual up to 08/2003 (mine is a 12/2000), at page 143 says "Models fitted with TCS can be also equipped with electronic differential

lock (EDL)" TCS is ASR (depending on the market). Mine is also a continental EU model so differences may apply. 

 

Anyway, EDL isn't as efficient as a mechanical LSD (my Honda has a oem helix one, so I know the difference) but is better than nothing. It could help you get unstuck in case one driving wheel is on a slippery surface. At totally slippery surfaces it is the driving skills that takes you out of trouble.
