Featured Replies

Lol, I had to google that... aren't those too many gears?! 😛

It's definitely worth it though (the arb, no idea about the 11 speed lol)

Bejam's review of the H&R rear arb on a Sportline non-DCC estate, sounds as if it's just as good as on the DCC car 👍

So... I took the chipped car for a spin tonight west out of Sheffield along the A57, via Ladybower and around Stanage Edge in the Peak District. Long sweepy bit of A road with some awkward cambers (the same ones that unfortunately bit Def Leppard drummer, Rick Allen, many years back), followed by a nice bit of hill climb opposite Yorkshire Bridge up onto the moors, where the road is bumpy as hell and can tie your suspension in knots.

I can't remember having this much fun in a car since 1995, when I had my last proper Porsche - a 964 Carrera 4. Before that, I had a 1990 RS, 1989 3.2 Carrera, the 1973 Le Mans Group B winning RSR for a few weeks (just an investment - it was a dangerous pig to drive on the road), 1987 944 Turbo, 1983 3.0 SC and a 1966 356 B Coupe. Since 1995, I've got my kicks on various motorbikes, so the Skoda is my first (relative) "performance" car since then - it's been family wagons in the meantime.

The 272 (340ish?) Superb shot up the hill like a scolded cat, with a bit of skipping around a little on the uneven moor roads under throttle - but never in a way that felt it didn't have loads of grip in reserve.

And on the A57, fast flowing overtakes were fun and confidence-inspiring. None of that slightly vague estate car floatiness I was experiencing before.

I thought I might bottom out the suspension a couple of times on the B roads when I got a little heavy footed - but the Sportline springs with the new rear ARB were a really nice balance of comfort, much more predictable turn-in and not too much wallowing. I think @newbie69's advice to try the ARB first was sound.

I haven't tried a DCC-shocked Superb yet - but for now, this has certainly stopped the FOMO. And it's only taken a couple of relatively cheap bolt-ons to achieve what feel like tangible improvements. Big smiles.

Ahem... I'll calm down now.

FWIW, the guys who are fitting my H&R also offered the SuperPro - said they were essentially identical and could do both brands for the same price.

Where was that then Bejam?

CLP Automotive in Sheffield - but they’re only doing work for locals at the mo, apparently. Not sure where you are, but I had to explain I was only 5 mins walk away before they considered doing it.

Small world. They did my remap and 'stuff'.

And killamarsh btw.

although the workshop who installed strongly recommend upgrading the swaybar end links too as the factory plastic ones will eventually fail/break because of the heavier duty sway bar.

i'm looking at getting either the:-

- ECS Adjustable Rear Sway Bar Endlinks
or

- Whiteline Adjustable Rear Sway Bar Endlinks
or

- SuperPro Sway Bar lInks

@newbie69, @Bejam - did either of u upgrade the end links?  if not, planning to?

some pics, but really, there is not much too see........

Another happy driver, we've definitely started something with all this arb-mania!

Your garage guy is not entirely correct though. The stock end-links are fine if you're still on stock suspension (ride height), it's not the stiffer bar that might wear them out quicker but the lowered height (where that applies) as it creates pre-tension which is not there on the stock setup.

I'm on stock suspension so I am keeping the stock end-links. But since you, are on Eibachs it would not hurt to consider upgrading them. Again, I say consider, not must upgrade. So he's kind of right in your case, but for the wrong reason 😛

Keep in mind upgraded end-links require a bit of maintenance from time to time, stock ones are maintenance free (unless you keep the car long enough to wear them out...)

Two main reasons why I'm changing the sway bar end links:-

1. The original bolt is not long enough to cater for the thicker bar.  Which they also told me about.

U can't even see it in the image close up below!!!!

2. The car is lowered on Eibachs.

But mainly for reason no. 1!!!

That looks weird to be honest. I did mine myself and had no trouble tightening it back to where it should be, leaving a good 3-4 threads exposed after the nut, I can get a pic later on probably.

Speaking from an engineering point of view this is wrong and potentially unsafe. I wonder how thick the flat ends on the Hardrace bar are and how they compare to the H&R's flat ends. This is either designed or installed wrong, OR, meant to be used only with aftermarket end-links. Would be worth contacting Hardrace and asking their view on this but I agree it needs some action.

I believe it's designed to b used only with aftermarket endlinks, but I don't believe reading that anywhere on the product.

I have contacted Hardrace.

I can c they sell their own version of the endlinks, but at double the cost of the Whiteline, SuperPro or ECS ones!!

I was about to say, could it be possibly designed such so that they force you into buying their own end-links? I had no idea they do make them or at what cost, but it seems my hunch was right.

Looking at the 034 end links they seem to be compatible as the connecting bolt is a removable item (as opposed to being integrated on the stock end-link), so even if it's short you can just replace it with a sightly longer one and be fine.

A foul from their side though (Hardrace's I mean) not stating that the stock end-links are too short to use with their sway bar, especially for people paying a garage to do it as it would same labour cost for sure, but also as it effectively doubles the total cost of this modification (if not more).

I didn’t go for modified end links. I asked the fitters, and they advised that they’ve never had issues with reusing the OE end links. If they wear out or break, I’ll sort them then.

Fitted my H+R rear bar yesterday and had no issues with the end links, spoke to the company I bought the bar from asking about the updated links and they advised against them as they can be noisy and the vag plastic ones are well up to the job

👍  How are you finding the drive? (assuming you had the chance to throw it around already)

Went round a few country lanes near where I live and must say it has stiffened the roll, no more wallowing from the rear and it’s made it more sportier, was considering a front upgrade but poss not now as it feels planted to the road. Thanks again for the info you gave 👍👍

Ah yes, I like going around roundabouts again!!!!

I don't know why I let the thought of DCC affect my decision to get this done much earlier!!

Have been following with interest and have seen this

Whiteline 24mm Rear Anti Roll Bar (4WD Only) - BWR25XZ

its listed for the Golf R 4wd although not for the Superb. Again not a lot is ever listed for the Superb but I’m thinking it should fit if the H&R rear arb with the part number 33852 HA-5 is listed for the Golf R as well as our Superbs ?

Probably but why not go with H&R or Eibach who have a confirmed fitment? It's a sway-bar after all, all of them will provide comparable benefits imo, so it all boils down to availability and price. If some company can't or won't confirm compatibility easily why take even a small risk when there are other options out there?

It was just the fact that Silverline currently have a Sale to be fair and they’re the cheapest by far

Sorry it should have said Whiteline not Silverline but unable to edit post

I am looking to "bite the bullet" and get the SuperPro 24mm rear sway bar and links for my Superb.

Just curious to know if anyone has suffered and additional noise / squeaks / knocks etc. after the install?

Or is the NVH unchanged?

This is probably the one thing stopping me getting it done...

I can only speak for the H&R but a bit over a month now and still as happy as when I first put it on, in fact I have completely forgotten it's there and nobody would know it's there either. There's absolutely no extra NVH or new noises at all, I expected that going up/down our parking ramp at an angle would generate something at least, in fact I paid full attention the first couple of days to catch that but there's nothing at all. And I am pretty particular with extra noises etc.

If really that's all that keeps you going forward stop wasting more time I'd say  :tongueout:

  • 4 weeks later...

I have ordered the H&R rear bar for my 280 this morning so looking forward to getting it fitted at some point hopefully next week! Glad i seen this post and the reviews as it made my mind up to pull the trigger on one.
