Grinding when accelerator pedal is enagaged

Featured Replies

Hi new to forum,

Just bought a 2012 Skoda Octavia Estate 1.6 TDI 4x4.

When driving at speeds above 30mph there is grinding noise that comes from the rear left wheel; it’s a rotational grinding as the wheels turn but only when the accelerator pedal is engaged - the faster you go the higher frequency the grinding is and the more the accelerator is engaged the louder the sound is.

Sounds like an issue with the drive chain but keen to get any thoughts.

Thanks,

Jake

it may be as simple as a stone lodged between the brake disc and the metal dust guard it does make quite a noise until it finally dislodges

That was the original thought but it is only when the accelerator is engaged which makes me think it is something to do with the drive chain..

I have no experience of 4x4 systems but gather there are mechanicals that require period maintenance/oil checks.  A lubrication/mechanical failure will probably result in the parts eating themselves possibly with collateral damage so the drivetrain to that wheel sounds like it needs investigation, preferably sooner rather than later as damage will no doubt be costly.

Await a more informed response.

Could be a CV joint. And when power is applied it sounds worse.

Thanks - yes only when power is engaged, the more power the louder the grinding and the faster the speed the higher frequency the grinding.

@JakeByrd  How many miles has your car done and are you going to a mechanic to get things checked out?

Relevant to the Haldex and the rear, but has the Haldex been serviced, and has the rear diff ever had and oil change?

Always worth a look underneath to see what you see.

Thanks for the comment - Its got just under 110k. Yes the car is going in for full service - I mostly wanted an idea as to how much it might cost as to prevent the garage taking the mick.

The Haldex is a good shout but , and I might be wrong here, it sits centrally between the rear wheels but the sound is distinctly coming from the rear left and I guess the same point stands for the rear differential also although I guess it is still good to get checked out regardless.

@JakeByrd

The bearing needs checking, but you could lift the rear and do that.

I was not saying your issue at the rear is the Haldex, but the Haldex Oil change used to be said to be at 4 years, and then 3 and 30,000 miles and some need doing sooner depending on if actually used in mud etc.

?

Do you know if the Haldex is actually functioning?

Okay thanks will definitely raise that at the garage.

Ah I see, honestly I don't know the car only has partial service history but I will have a look - I am not sure if this is something that would be covered by a full service?

Certainly not covered under a Skoda Main Dealer Service.

The Haldex and the Diff oil changes would be 'Extra Charges', as is Brake Fluid change and anything more than an Oil & Filter change and look see and report.

There is said to be some topping up done.....

Best use a trusted VW Independent.
