Yeti 2016 L&K water in the headlights

Featured Replies

Afternoon, I need some collective thoughts here ... after a run in some very heavy rain yesterday, this morning I notice I have water in the OSF headlight 🤢

I have checked the covers for the lamps (the ones you replace the bulbs through), they are both intact and have their seals in place and are correctly tightened.

Any ideas how the water is getting in, its an active Xenon unit.

Ive checked the headlamp lens and there are no cracks or holes that I can see from the front/top.

So

1/ best method of drying the headlamp out?

2/ where to look for the ingress point given what I have already checked?

3/ do you need to take the bumper off to remove the headlamp (so I can check under the lamp unit for something amiss?)

4/ if the bumper does require to be removed, does anyone have instructions on how to do this on a F/L Yeti. (Im hoping the lamp can come out via the top .... not holding my breath.)

Any ideas?

Not too long ago, a front foglight was filling up (and going green).

My supplying dealer promptly replaced complete unit, no quibbles, under my 3 + 2 years warranty.

I have also had the other occasional failure treated similarly - nothing to do with the sunroof which remains fault free.

Is your L&K still within a warranty period?

Hello Bex, manufacturers? ... unfortunately no, but it does have some Skoda extended left ... Its due in to the dealer in the next couple of weeks for its 4th year service and MOT, I'll mention it.

If it’s got the Skoda extended warranty then INSIST they change the unit, water got in somewhere so there is a weak point and you need to get them to sort it out while the car is covered.

Fair point Expatman .... I'll report back the list of excuses why they think its not covered 🙂 .... why do I have an impending sense of doom approaching.

Oh, no Ive turned into Pvt Frazer .... doomed I tell yea, doomed.

If you’ve got the Skoda extended warranty they have no option but to repair (can’t do) or replace. I had a similar conversation about a heated seat pad and after a little debate they replaced it without problem. Sometimes dealers don’t actually know that an extended warranty provides cover of all items as in first 3 years - just need reminding!

If you’ve got a warranty then it’s a straightforward swap I would say if there’s no obvious damage, which they could claim was the cause. Depends on your dealer to a great extent.

Out of warranty, I had a large amount of condensation (running down inside of halogen headlight) after a bulb change. I was convinced the unit was gone as I couldn’t envisage how so much moisture would have got in then, however I removed the bulb covers and used a hairdryer (it took two good goes) and the unit has been dry now for the last 10 months, so fingers crossed OK.

Hope you get it sorted.

Not quite the same for me; but I remember a poster mentioning this and I went and and saw the same. It just cleared up after the next use (of the headlight, I mean) and that was seven years ago. It has not reappeared.

I'd agree for condensation in the headlight ... Volvo even mention this in there owners manual for the XC90 ....  but with the yeti I'm sure goldfish could survive in mine ... defo not condensation but water sloshing about.

Manufacturers

I'm first owner from new, car came with 3 and I paid £525 + vat for 2 more years per the original order form.

Very happy with the car overall and probably breaking even on the 'cost' of work done under warranty / additional warranty cost.

Still 8 months extended warranty left, so some reassurance just in case

Similar here, we are the first owner, and took 1 year extended at purchase ...TBH, we have had very little go wrong, but probably fairly expensive ... electric driver seat control module failed, SatNav replaced ... all under manufacturers ... so I hope we don't get any problems over this headlight issue before the warranty expires. 🤞

OK, update time.

The car went for its year 4 service and MOT on the 12th of August, complete with the drivers headlight full of water.

Dealer phoned to say the car was ready, serviced and passed its MOT. I asked about the headlight and they stated they had "dried it out." I queried why and what the extended warranty company (Skoda) had said ... "oh they don't cover headlights sir", the cost of a new light is £485 plus fitting and VAT.  I pointed out that they did and the dealer asked for the extended warranty policy documentation, which I supplied (why they didn't have that info is beyond me, they are a Skoda main dealer.)

They spent 5 days drinking coffee and then phoned to say the warranty work had been declined, I asked why and they stated again "headlights are never covered." I explained that nothing in the policy wording for "all component cover" suggested the headlight was not covered.

They agreed to "appeal" the decline decision .... 2 weeks passed, again they said that the warranty work had been declined, and I should phone Skoda warranty to discuss.

I stated that the onus for the claims are with the dealer, and that was stated in the warranty documentation, but if they gave me the rejected claim number I would speak to Skoda as the extended warranty now only has days to run before it expired. Himmm errrm, no claim details were forthcoming ... so I asked to speak with the service/warranty manager at the dealership ... "oh he is busy" not good enough, and I wanted the dealer principle ...... nothing. I said I wanted an answer and would phone back in the morning.

I then phoned Skoda warranty ... yup you guessed it ... no claim for my car had ever been made ? WTF! ... oh and headlights ARE covered under the "all component cover"

Next morning, I was gearing up for a battle as the dealer had now taken 4 weeks doing nothing but fobbing me off.

Phone rings ... its the dealer ... ah, we have tried very hard and managed to persuade the warranty company to look again and after our pressure they have agreed to replace the headlight, please book the car in asap.

Grrrrr ...  service/warranty manager and dealer principle are still not available ......

So the car went in to the dealer and came out with a new headlight paid for by Skoda extended warranty.

Up shot ... headlight replaced under extended warranty with no cost to me, and my supplying dealer ...... is now less one customer.

Do they (the dealer) get a bonus for fobbing the customer off and making nil claims against extended warranty ... I'm beginning to think so!
