Questions to ask on testdrive

Featured Replies

Hi, am looking at this as possible purchase. What sort of questions should I be asking dealer, please? And price seem reasonable?

Welcome to the forum.

Has it been in an accident.

Has it been a write off?

Does the seller know of any issues or faults with the vehicle and how long have they had it.

?

Are they the 'Registered Keeper',  or is the car 'In Trade'.

2 former keepers means Registered Keepers, various traders could have had the car.

?

Do you really need a diesel car?

What age is this car and how many miles?

It might have had the Emissions Fix, so you need to know what that can mean.

If Skoda Serviced or sold by a Skoda dealer as used last time or this it very likely has had it done.  In the MK2 section you will see why this can be an issue.

So,

?

What does the Full Service History actually show as the Servicing done.

Was it oil and filter each year and not much else?

When was the Air Filter, Fuel Filter and Pollen Filter last changed, when was the Brake Fluid changed last if ever?

Check for Invoices, Receipts for the 'Full Service History'.

Check the past MOT's for Advisories and any past Fails so work required.

Thanks v much! That's all really useful.

Can you post a link to the advert?

Sometimes we can spot things that might be helpful.

As George has said, age and miles needed, before anyone can even start to comment on the price.

The first service entry from Formula One Autocentres is a bit puzzling but otherwise looks tidy enough.

Is it this 'Silver' one?  Not Green Metallic.

More important is are you doing long journeys to keep the DPF running OK. This car needs long runs every week to help the DPF regenerate. If you just pootle around town a 2010 1.9tdi fabia diesel would be better.

Has it had the emissions fix? If you have no knowledge of theses thing I suggest you google them.

If it is the one above use the MOT advisory to barter.

What kind of warranty is the seller offering? Is it a FULL warranty, I.e, What does it cover or more importantly, whet is NOT included?

Go in with at least £300 less then asking price. Suggest if they want more, you mIGHT just pop back later in the week. If they really can't come down, chance your arm and ask for an extended warranty. floor mats/mudflaps/full tank of fuel.

I really hate sellers selling a vehicle with enough fuel to get you to the local petrol station!

Some dealers offer a free lifetime MOT. Not great if miles from home but if local and as long as you own the car, it may be worth it but be aware, an MOT is only £50-odd quid. If they "Find" lots of jobs to do, it may not be cost effective. (Use a garage with a no-pass-no fee deal. They won't fail you for a simple fix. Always take it away and fix, then return...(Less chance of getting stung)!
