You confirmed that your navigation is showing mph correctly; however, would you be able to confirm if the speedo unit changes correctly to km/h if you select km instead of miles in the units?

That would be extremely helpful if you could.

thanks in advance

will try this in an hour and get back to you

Re going to the ombudsman. Worth a try as maybe someone that works there has a MK4 Octavia and knows how to fix software or is sick to the teeth of having a Skoda with faults.

Seems mine does change

Thanks a lot Matmacka. Much appreciated.

It confirms that PN 5E3035816B makes the issue goes away so I can raise the issue formally with my dealership.

I have emailed Whatcar to ask the question. I have also filled them in about the fact that there are obviously a number of us in the same situation. It would be nice if they contacted Skoda to see what they had to say! Hopefully, they will get back to me with an answer. It cannot be illegal in Europe to drive in mph only

Thanks that should be helpful and I will back you up if it helps.

Thanks, it really shouldn't take this long to sort it out. We know where the problem lies, so why taking so long? It is poor

FYI - After raising the issue yesterday(went straight to the CEO of the dealership group), the dealership sent me a video on how to set in speed/units in the Columbus this morning.

I have re-explained the HW issue and non-compliance to the UK road regulation. I provided a video to confirm it as well.

Anyway, my dealership is coming to collect the car today as it is a software issue, which they will fix this quickly. I will keep you posted of whether they can fix it with a SW upgrade or not...

Thanks Coume, that is looking more positive we seem to be moving in the right direction. I have also emailed Honest John - Telegraph who was most interested especially comparing it to the numerous issues experienced with the sister vehicle the Golf 8.  Keep up the pressure and hopefully we will eventually all get the car we thought we were buying initially.

It’s a shame they can’t software update the appalling unusable sat nav someone signed off as fit for purpose. I wonder if they decided not to use map info from one of the usual providers and come up with their own, and now cannot afford to fix it, leaving the customer a defective vehicle. Similar thing happened in the seventies to British leyland, come up with design, put it into production before it was ready and let the customers develop it, look what happened to them, perhaps VAG  will follow.
what I cannot understand is the lack of comment from the motoring press, do they not test these cars or are they scared to say anything because they fear being cut off by the manufacturer.

This all reminds me of something that one of the senior engineers at the Ford Research Centre in Dunton Essex said to me a few years ago:

Quote

never buy a car in the first year after it's launch, let someone else sort out all the problems

Having had Skodas for many years I had faith in the German engineering of the VAG group, unfortunately not any more. I will not even look at a car from VAG next time, not because the car has a fault but because they have no interest in in fixing it. I think next time it will be Korean, my daughters Kia has car with all systems working as they should, I haven’t, why should I give a company like my custom.

As I said in my HAD ENOUGH post I totally agree. I'm off for the same reasons.

Agreed. Skoda are not covering themselves in glory here. First they release a product that is clearly not finished and then they just leave a significant group of customers with no clear plan on how to fix it. I've had enough and rejected the car because of this and faulty matrix lights. I'm in limbo at the moment. The garage have agreed "in principle" to the rejection of the car, I'm just twiddling my thumbs whilst they agree with "the brand" the terms of the buy back. Frankly I just want it done so that I can move on to something that works

Hi folks,

A bit late to the party here.  I was looking at how to change the display on the speedometer from MPH to KPH when I eventually am able to drive in France and found that it wouldn't change.  Having read through the post, I looked at my 1.5 SEL 1st Edition, and found that my car also had the same system configuration as many of you.

I pressed Update software and the circle just went round and round and nothing much happened.

It's not a big deal and I still think it's a lovely car to drive.

By virtue of the photographic evidence kindly provided above by Matmaca which provides unequivocal proof that that VAG knew of this issue thus necessitating the upgrade to the PN:- 5E3035816B.  They are deliberately being tardy in failing to recall affected vehicles.  Note also that the clock is also displayed as in the advertising brochures in the top centre of the dash.

Hopefully this will persuade even the most resistant manufacturer to rectify same and relieve the frustration and ensure the vehicle is compliant under S.35 The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986.

I feel pressure has to be exerted on Skoda to accept their responsibility not to mention their liability for delivering an un-roadworthy vehicle.

I have written to my dealership as above requesting they pressure Skoda directly, perhaps you could all consider doing the same.

So as expected they just returned my vehicle after acknowledging that there is a glitch.

As I just took delivery of mine last week, I am covered by the 30 days window and finding about the non-compliance to the UK road regulation is likely to be the key lever, which will get Skoda UK to address this long standing issue (I have been CC'ing the head of PR and Press of skoda UK in my exchanges, should there is a need to publicize it at a later stage).

I have only driven 60 miles or so in it but the car is nice so I am hopeful that they will address it promptly, failing that I could ask for a refund but I would much rather get the SW corrected or the head unit replaced as the first impressions of the car are positive.

Btw, having worked in the customer service centre of General Motors (Opel and Vauxhall), I have seen my fair share of issues and all manufacturers have them.  But if I was to change make, I would still be unable to buy a Vauxhall! Too many bad memories. :)

Hi Coume,

Thanks for the update. Please could you send me the address of the Head of PR and press at Skoda so I can start doing the same? I have now written to a number of Review sites stating the problem and am awaiting contact from my complaint to Skoda UK. I think that all of us with this problem need to 'raise the stakes' so to speak to put united pressure on Skoda to sort out our shared issue. It is unacceptable that they know about this and are seemingly dong nothing about it. They know by now what the issue is, so why no recall to replace the unit?

Please could you share with myself as well, I will do the same.  I’ll also try and raise it with Which, where I have a personal contact their.  It’s a ridiculous situation!

I have emailed Which, and received no reply as yet. If you have a contact there, if you would mind sharing, I shall do the same again.

Why no recall to address the issue, answer Cost. They will have done the calculations that any bad publicity and dissatisfied customers will be cheaper than having to redesign or reinstall/replace components, both of which they will have to pay dealers for plus the cost of any courtesy cars. They didn’t choose to stop using emissions cheating software and tell the world what they had done they were forced to, same old story sack a few people say we’re reformed and let’s all move on, nothing to see. Sad to see but that’s how big corporations work these days.

I do see this but if the car is in controvention of the Road Vehicles Regulations, should they not be forced to correct the issue. It would seem then that the Motor Ombudsmen would be the best place to seek help then.

Good morning all and thanks for all your efforts on behalf of all owners.  I am in correspondence with Honest John at the Telegraph who is responding in a positive way however he did say:- 'so far yours is the only complaint I have actually received. I would need more to raise the issue'.  His contact details are:-

I am sure you will all agree that the more irritation we can cause the more likely it will be that Skoda will address these issues.

FYI I have attached copy of the initial letter I sent to Honest John together with copy of his response where he compares the Octavia to the Golf 8 - Makes very interesting reading - definitely not good for the VAG Brand.  The 3rd attachment is detail of FAQ Consumer Rights.

In advance I thank you all for your support and assistance.  Between us we ought to be able to obtain a resolution.

Wowzers!!!
I’d say that the reason they’re not resolving these issues swiftly is the scale of the problem!!
Be interesting to see how Seat Leon owners are getting on?
But considering this affected these VAG models across all markets, I’d say they are being overwhelmed right now.
