Post diesel scam performance

Featured Replies

Hi Guys i need your help!

I was set on buying a 2010 VRS the Diesel one 60k miles full Skoda History Engine Code - EA189 CEGA.

I really wish i had not started to google about the enigine to be honest as now i have uncovered the whole issue these had with the VW scandal, the one i am looking at has had the software update according to Skodas website and from what i read customers complaining about loss of power etc etc.

Basically is it worth me buying one as i don't want something that is under powered because of this. so if someone could share if they experienced the loss of power post software upgrade specifcally with the diesel VRS

What sort of mileage/journeys do you do?

Unless it's high annual mileage and mostly longer journeys, I wouldn't recommend a 'modern' diesel. There is too much to go wrong which can be very costly to repair. You also need to consider that various cities are likely to ban or charge extra for euro5 based diesels - it's worth checking anywhere you're likely to be driving :)

From various tests done earlier in the emission fix scandal, the peak HP and torque didn't change much but when/how the power/torque was delivered did. Whether this is a problem is down to your personal opinion during the test drive. The emissions fix is also likely to shorten the life of the EGR valve and DPF, depending how long you intend to keep the car this may or may not concern you.

I spent 2 years faffing about trying to decide which car to buy, and in the end I settled on a car I liked, but I realise it's a trade-off compromise car and doesn't quite tick all the boxes I wanted a car to tick for me.

Anything wrong with a car can be fixed. Test drive a few examples of the car and see if you like it. If you do, then base your decision on that.

The VAG 2.0 TDI engine is excellent and is nice to drive in a vRS. There can be issues with the DPF if you don't give the car a good run regularly, as well as other potential faults, but that can be said for any vehicle.

My advice is to do your due diligence, but don't over-think it. As for the whole emissions/power-loss fiasco, a remap can sort all that out.

Find an nice example with a solid service history at a sensible price, buy, drive and enjoy.

(My own tip is to look at the tyres: People who buy budget tyres normally skimp on servicing too.)
