Automatic break

Featured Replies

I just want to get this clear once and for all. If I get too close (e.g. creeping traffic) will the car automatically slam the breaks if I'm on a collision course?

Front assist and all that

No idea but hopefully not slam them on if getting too close and you are not paying attention, just apply the brakes as you are just creeping with the traffic.

?

Why not try and see?

Maybe they will scare you sh-tless when going a bit quicker.

I've driven almost 10K km on my new Superb 2020 and never had such an issue. Front Assist is working (I the distance is too short), but the car never slammed the brakes by itself.

As far as I’m aware, it’s just an alarm and that little picture of two cars and the exclamation mark. If been thinking about getting a load of polystyrene to test it!

In my experience (190 DSG L&K) if you are on the brakes already and it thinks you won't stop in time.......it will help you along, and it's not gentle when it happens,

Hi Mfizz, the brakes will not operate in full ABS mode (front assist) if you are only crawling along in a line of traffic - they will do so however if you are travelling in excess of about 15-20 mph. Automatic brake application is pretty fierce!

What's even more disconcerting is when I'm reversing into my drive from the road, sometimes if there's another car coming up behind to pass me the brakes are slammed on...

I had my initial test drive in a 2.0tdi dsg superb and the salesman demonstrated, with ACC engaged, how the car could slow down by itself, changing down gear to a complete halt whilst following a car slowing down to traffic lights at red. It did so and was quite impressive. However, he smiled at me nervously as he was demonstrating while using the words, "hopefully this works...." and said he kept his foot over the brake just in case....

When the lights turned green and the car in front moved off, the car set off on its own and accelerated away under ACC (not sure if he stabbed the accelerator to initiate it).

This, I presume, is Traffic jam assist in action.

I dont have dsg so I can only comment that its fairly predictable if I'm travelling say 20 mph+, and the car in front is closer than maybe 15m turns sharp left onto a side road it often triggers the alarm. If you are too close (which is not that close), the brakes then come on full whack as evidenced by the ABS cutting in on my crap P7 tyres.  Done this twice, but as soon as the car cleared, normal service was restored, so far only 1 second duration braking.

Did it once on a motorway when I was passing a rather large Mercedes ML class 4x4 (on the correct side), I think the Mercedes started moving to the left lane just as I was about to pass. Was a WTF moment.

On at least one occasion when I got a little too close the car in front ( >25mph) when following in a relatively straight road (no one turning) the alarm has gone off and if I was too slow to react (maybe 2 secs) then the car started braking, but in a controlled manner before I took over. ACC was not on in this case.

I think the answer to your question is it depends if the car thinks a crash is imminent.

No, that's not what's happening. I'm in the road parallel with the curb with no cars behind me, I start reversing at a couple of mph ready to turn into my drive, other car is coming up behind me and pulling out to pass me. Zero chance of any collison but car slams the brakes on.

@IanJD I've had similar when reversing into the garage. If I'm not gently braking, it thinks I'll hit the garage walls and it slams the car to a stop and a "manoeuvre" warning comes up on the dash.

It scared the absolute **** out of me the first time it happened 😂

So this is the think in my 2016 assist from when I've had the acc on, it has never applied the breaks.

I've set the alarm to be early on getting assist and every now and then it will show the red car with WiFi signals all round it on the maxi for with an audible alert, but never applied the breaks.

I guess I'm too chicken to try out out for real. I've gotten pretty close to not breaking to the car in front but it still never applied it.

I have been brave with ACC! Coming off a slip road to join a queue of traffic it brakes late and hard. But it does work.

Trust me the car brakes. I have been thrown forward many times when driving at speed and going for an overtake. Misjudged how fast I'm gaining and it has given the red sign of brick wall braking. Also reversing during tight Manouveres it has emergency stopped as I try to a quick turn. I think you get maybe 1-2 seconds to react to the audible alarm and red warning or it steps in

Manoeuvre Assist, where it brakes for u during slow speed parking, was introduced from MY18.

Prior to that, it will let u hit that bollard or wall or parked car.....

I think the 'manouevre braking' (automatic braking at low speeds based on the parking sensors) came in the 2017 model year. You should have the 'Front assist' (automatic emergency braking based on the radar), do you get the distance warning if you tailgate someone (for test purposes only of course 😉)?

A plastic bag blew onto my grill and the brakes slammed on, luckily it dropped off fairly quickly and the brakes released.

It was a good job there was no one behind me, it would have given them a shock.

Yes, but it doesn't have the sense to realise that if I'm reversing at 2mph and a car is driving up behind me at 30mph slamming the brakes on isn't helpful regardless of whether the other car hits me or not, I'm not the one doing 30mph...

Thankfully mine prevented me ftom reversing into a brand new range rover earlier this year.  I was reversing out of a car parking space and got distracted by a couple of pedestrians so was watching them and not the expensive motor behind me.  I can confirm it's not gentle braking.

Nope, definitely not in MY17, as I have one myself.

As I said before - from MY18 onwards.

Apologies, missed your earlier post and forgot that my car from December 2017 is MY18.
