MK2 fabia vrs. Excessive front tyre wear new to fully bald 3000 milesBala

Featured Replies

Hi just had new tyres about three weeks ago and have been doing some one off work requiring 250 mile round trips roughly done about 3000 miles in 3 weeks. Tyres as per picture are pretty bad with belt even belt showing on one side. Wear looks uneven but all of the tyre is fully worn if not more so. Just wondering if anyone had the same and it was the tracking or something else entirely. I've no idea if the steering independent front Braking affects this scrubbing tyres or if there is something else that can be done.  Cheers tyres are Avon zv7 I think so nothing special but should have lasted about 5 times as long to my calculations. Mostly motorway driving.

So that is pretty crap.  They are not crap tyres though.  Well not usually

So what pressure did you run those at and are the 205/40 R17's?

What load and speed rating are those ones?

Mustn't be pointing in the same direction.

Excessive toe-out is the only thing to do that so fast, hit a kerb hard recently?

So I was running the specced pressures for a low loaded car. Think it's 240.f 230 back kpa. Sorry don't know psi kpa is on the fuel flap and here is the ratings of the tyres

If you had them at 35psi then not an issue there then.  Did you set that pressures personally?

What tyres did you have on before those tyres, and for how many miles?  What were they like when removed?

Not particularly that I remember but most bumps feel quite hard in the fabia so I tend to go slow anyway but I'm quite careful with kerbs

My fuel flap tyre pressures on Mk2 Fabia hatch showed in BAR.

I had some zz5 on previously. Were about 40-60% used when I got it and done around 5000 miles on them before they needed changing my expectations are around 12000 miles would be good for me on fronts.  I didn't set the pressures but did check them personally.

Set the steering wheel central, look at the driver's side front wheel from in front of the car and make any adjustments to the steering wheel to get that pointing straight ahead, in line with the rear wheel.

Drive the car forwards a yard or two without moving the steering wheel.

Then take a look at the both front wheels and see how straight they look relative to the rears.

For wear that fast I think you'll see a misalignment with mk1 eyeball.

Thanks will have a look tomorrow when it's light out.

whatever the cause, get it tracked as soon as the new tyres are fitted.

They do look more worn in the centre which would also point to over inflation.

I'm about to fit 4 new tyres, after seeing this I don't think the Avons will be on the list now, even with poor tracking, 3000miles really is nothing......

Here's one of my Avon ZV's when I first had the car. This tyre had covered 3,000 miles. Sorting the tracking sorted it and the Kumho's I fitted after lasted almost 20.000 miles.

Are your eyes ok?

The wear is terrible on the inside, the belts are actually visible!

Inflation has played no part in this, it's entirely down to high speed motorway use with really bad tracking.

No tyre brand would have survived this level of abrasion, there's nothing wrong with the Avons, I have a pair on the back of mine and they're just fine and dandy.

yeah eyes are fine thx, just missed it wasn't paying "that" much attention was on the blower at the time, my bad..... can see the chords now, not a great photo either tbh.....hey ho....was close to a blow out really....spotted just in time.

I did say it needed tracking though :)

I honestly think the motorway use with bad tracking sounds like what's happened here. Thanks all for all the thoughts. Definitely getting the new set tracked glad they aren't super expensive tires but still annoying after only a few weeks. The picture is bad but you can see a lot of the metal on both of them. Actually a slow puncture on one as what made me check which is scary because there weeks on new tires me thinking they were fine is scary when they look like that coming off. Glad to not have a blowout on the motorway

In my experience the Avon's actually have been really good feel wise etc from the previous set I had on. And for the money they are definitely better than the budget end being a better quality but still kind of budget price range.

I'm a firm believer in you get what you pay for in anything, and as the tyre is what keeps you attached to the road, I don't understand people who fit cheap tyres.

As you say the Avon is a mid range tyre, I would tend to lean towards a higher end tyre, the michelin pilot sport 4 is looking fav at the moment, I have had michelin pilots on a few cars over the years and they were really good in grip and wear.

Also looking at Goodyear Eagle Asymmetric 5

The conti's I have on now are far to noisy on the rear.........
