Skoda Fabia MK2 exhaust manifold red glow....??? is that normal

Featured Replies

That's not 900 degrees because you're looking at it in the dark, look in daylight!

  • Of course it's normal, exhaust gases are extremely hot, they're the product of an explosion which reaches thousands of degrees momentarily. How else would it get that hot, a dwarf with an oxy-acetylen

  • I know manifolds get hot but I have never seen one glow in normal road use... I would expect someone racing a car to get it that hot (Or even quit prior to ruining things) But not on the road.

  • Under what driving conditions?   You'd have to have been racing round a racetrack non stop for that to happen.

VCDS doesn't have a clue, there's no thermocouple fitted to that petrol engine.

ok so lets say that vcds is not correct. i ve also check the temp with laser thermometer and temps are like the ones in vcds..

The lambda sensor can give temperature info, via its PTC heater whose resistance changes.

Definitely not normal to see it that hot.

Any advice what to check?

The only thing to check is that the exhaust valves are sealing properly for which a leak down test is needed.

They are sealing properly, its the 2nd time ive tried it.

Check the chain timing by fitting crank and cam locking devices simultaneously.

Thank you, gonna try tommorow. ive checked it but first the crank and then the camshaft and vice-versa.

I really don't know then, but if you do find out, please come back and update the thread, unlike the previous guy who said he'd solved his.

 👍

this car really pi**ed me off. don’t know what the f to check or to do. it run perfect but still makes this ****

ive seen that i m not the only one with this problem but still anyone doesnt figure out what is it

cylinder 1 and 2. something îs really different

It suggests cylinder 2 (the lighter) is running leaner than cylinder 1, not dramatically so.

Is the EML or EPC light on? Has the car been scanned for error codes?

Check the brake servo vacuum line is intact, no splits at every joint, or hanging off the inlet manifold, allowing air to be drawn in.

Over fuelling causes the cat to run really hot. So may be a faulty injector leaking.

hello and thanks for reply. No Eml or epc light on, only stored in memory something about catalytic converter, gonna post to see exactly what is said. the cat box is now empty.

gonna check for what you said, what is weird is that the car runs on lpg and petrol with different injectors and on both fuels it does exactly the same.

I didn't know this car had been converted to run on lpg.

I'd suggest that there's a lot here that is beyond the scope of most members, certainly me.

Only thing I can think is lpg requires completely different ignition timing to petrol and maybe there in lies potential problems.

Hey guys, has anyone resolved the overheating catalytic converter issue on a Skoda Fabia 2? Specifically, is it related to sensor failures or fuel mixture problems?

  • 3 weeks later...

I've got this engine and saw this thread so last night I pulled over after driving the previous 5 miles at a steady 50 mph and had a look at the cat, sure enough it was glowing a dull red. This was at night!

My engine seems fine when driving. When idleing I can feel a small amount of vibration from the drivers seat but without sampling another I don't know if that's  normal for a 3 cylinder engine.

I'm going to do a service soon so I'll do a compression test at the same time see if that reveals anything!
