Octavia Scout Mk3 Rear Suspension

Featured Replies

I have always thought my rear suspension a little soft when towing or even with a full tank. I fitted rubber assisters and this has helped hugely but I would like a little more permanent solution.

How can I tell if springs such as these - https://www.autodoc.co.uk/lesjofors/9735347 are heavier duty? It does say for towing. Would fitting new shocks (Bilstein B6?) help as well?

I suppose crawling under to see what shocks I have, and what springs I have may a good idea anyway? I think there is a paint code on springs to guide me?

Scout shocks and springs are supposed to be stiffer than standard O3 equipment, I tow with mine and have done for several years, and have not noticed any real sag, although over time the clearance has reduced very slightly. Might be an idea to find a VAG independent to get advice on a replacement for the rear that would be suitable.

To find out what springs were factory fitted, check the build codes or the coloured dots on the springs (if they are original).

For example, if you had build code PR-L30 or 1 grey dot and 1 violet dot, that would mean that the front springs have OEM number 5Q0411105HR.

For the front springs, you are looking for a number between L02 and L35.

For the rear springs, you are looking for a number between 1JB+0YB and 1JB+0YE.

Some of the build codes are on a white label attached to the car somewhere in the boot area.

You can use this "VW Group Option Codes Decoder" to make sense of what the build codes mean.

 http://igorweb.org/equidec.aspx

For example, in the above link the build code 1JB = Rear shock absorption for rough-road design

@wallacebob For the rear ones you may need to crawl under the car.. My 16' Scout has no build code for the rear suspension, but only for the front:

G10 = Front shock absorption
L31 = Suspension range 31 installation control only, no requirement forecast

Other codes aren't related at all.

The clearance of mine is reduced as well. I'm following this topic with interest. Also wondering are L35 higher than L31 - are they ordered by height or it's just a code abbreviation?( thanks @Carlston :P )

Build code L31 is for OEM number 5Q0411105HS.

On the gknautomotive website, Spidan 87966 is sold to replace OEM part number 5Q0411105HS.

Spidan 87966 has the following specifications:

Spring Design Coil spring with constant wire diameter

Thickness 13,00 mm
Length 326 mm
Outer diameter 152 mm
Weight 2,05 kg
Colour Coding Grey, Blue

Many of the springs won't be suitable for the Scout model. Some are standard ride height springs. There is not necessarily any pattern as you go down the list of springs. For example, L32 isn't necessarily related to L31. You might not be able to find any matching aftermarket springs to many of the OEM part numbers given above.

Your suspension codes are: G09 which is general code for front shocks and L30 is for the front suspension range, but nothing is mentioned for the rear. I used the tool provided by @Carlston - http://igorweb.org/equidec.aspx

G09 = Front shock absorption

I suspect Bilstein 22-230522 could also be used to replace OEM part number 5Q0413023GB, although this OEM part number isn't specifically mentioned in the Bilstein listing on autodoc. However, there are 9 OEM part numbers that are mentioned in the Bilstein listing that are also mentioned in the KYB 3348039 listing. Plus the length of the KYB is listed at 550mm and the length of the Bilstein is listed at a very similar 548mm. They both have a 50mm strut diameter.

Thanks for useful info, any place I can see parts for rear springs and shocks?

Is your car an Octavia MK3 Estate 2.0TDi 150HP 4x4 Scout with manual gearbox (ie. not DSG)?

Kilen 65073 is sold to replace both the 1K0511115CS rear spring from the Octavia MK2 and the 5Q0511115AM rear spring from the Octavia MK3.

Spidan 86501 is sold to replace 1K0511115CS

Spring Design Coil spring with constant wire diameter
Fitting Position Rear Axle
Thickness 12,75 mm
Length 382 mm
Outer diameter 117 mm
Weight 2,60 kg

https://web.tecalliance.net/gkn/en/parts/1/86501/detail?query=1K0511115CS&numberType=1&oe=1K0511115CS&groups=188#@brc/search:Search%20by%20any%20number%201K0511115CS;mandator:gkn;query:1K0511115CS;groups:188;brands:1;pf:2;page:0/detail:86501;brandId:1;articleNo:86501;mandator:gkn;query:1K0511115CS;numberType:1;oe:1K0511115CS;groups:188

Spidan 87970 is sold to replace 5Q0511115AM

Spring Design Coil spring with constant wire diameter
Fitting Position Front Axle
Thickness 12,75 mm
Length 383 mm
Outer diameter 117 mm
Weight 2,60 kg

https://web.tecalliance.net/gkn/en/parts/1/87970/detail?query=5Q0511115AM&numberType=1&oe=5Q0511115AM&groups=188#@brc/search:Search%20by%20any%20number%205Q0511115AM;mandator:gkn;query:5Q0511115AM;groups:188;brands:1;pf:2;page:0/detail:87970;brandId:1;articleNo:87970;mandator:gkn;query:5Q0511115AM;numberType:1;oe:5Q0511115AM;groups:188

So without realising it, it appears that Spidan have made two almost identical rear springs and are selling them under different model numbers.

Aftermarket rear springs that are sold to replace 1K0511115CS are often a lot cheaper than aftermarket rear springs that are sold to replace 5Q0511115AM.

With companies like autodoc, if you pay a little extra (about £3 or £4 last time I looked) autodoc will pay for the return postage to Germany on parts that you don't want.

autodoc are charging about 60% more for the Sachs rear spring that is sold to replace 5Q0511115AM than the Sachs rear spring that is sold to replace 1K0511115CS. Hence, if these really are virtually identical rear springs, getting the MK2 rear spring could save about £40 on just the rear springs alone.

For Sachs springs try superbcarparts on ebay.co.uk

superbcarparts sell them in pairs X2 at often the best prices on ebay. They have thousands of listings and excellent feedback.

If they don't have a current listing for the springs that you want, they can often order them for you at competitive prices.

For example, I just got a quote from superbcarparts for the following Sachs springs for the Octavia MK3 2.0TDi 150HP 4x4 Scout with manual gearbox.

x2 Sachs 993959 front springs which matches OEM number 5Q0411105HR £90 for two springs.

x2 Sachs 992102 rear springs which matches OEM number 5Q0511115AM £100 for two springs.

superbcarparts on ebay.co.uk are usually cheaper than autodoc for Sachs springs, and unlike autodoc, superbcarparts include free postage.

Excellent; I’ll get the wheel off tomorrow for a look and measure the springs.

If the front springs have 1 grey dot and 1 violet dot they are OEM part number 5Q0411105HR, which matches the L30 build code.

I can't find coloured dots for the rear springs, so I will list the length, spring coil thickness, and weight of the three rear springs that might be fitted to the rear of an Octavia MK3 4x4 Scout. I think you have 5Q0511115AM. 5Q0511115AL is the next weight/stiffness down and 5Q0511115AN is the next weight/stiffness up.

When the rear springs are fitted to the car, the easiest way to decide which of these three springs you have, is to measure the spring coil thickness with digital calipers.

If you have the rear spring with Coil Spring Thickness 12.75mm, then your digital calipers might read 0.1mm more, ie. 12.85mm as the 12.75mm reading won't include the paint. When you take the rear spring off the car, a good way to check what rear spring you have is to weigh it on some digital kitchen scales and compare the reading to the weights that I have listed below.

5Q0511115AL Length 378mm, Coil Spring Thickness 12.50mm, Weight 2.45kg

5Q0511115AM Length 383mm, Coil Spring Thickness 12.75mm, Weight 2.6kg

5Q0511115AN Length 382mm, Coil Spring Thickness 13.00mm, Weight 2.75kg

According to autodoc the Bilstein 19-230559 rear shock absorber fits the Octavia MK3 Estate 2.0TDi 4x4 150HP. It doesn't specifically mention the Scout, but it does say that it is suitable for off-road suspension...although it also says it's suitable for standard suspension and sports suspension. So you might want to find out the OEM number of your rear shock absorbers, so that you can compare it with the list that the Bilstein 19-230559 has.

https://www.autodoc.co.uk/car-parts/shock-absorber-10221/skoda/octavia/octavia-combi-5e5/59490-2-0-tdi-4x4?criteria[100]=HA&supplier[0]=16&supplier[1]=16

Bilstein 19-230559 can replace the following OEM numbers:

5QM513029A

5QM513029AC

5QM513029M

5Q0513029BQ

5Q0513029DA

5Q0513029DB

5Q0513029DP

5Q0513029DQ

5Q0513029DR

5Q0513029DS

5Q0513029EM

5Q0513029EN

5Q0513029GL

Bilstein 19-230559 is for build codes 0N4, G01, G02, G03, G04.

The Bilstein B6 won't fit because that's for standard suspension.

The Bilstein B8 won't fit because that's for sports suspension.

Edited by Carlston

The Bilstein 19-230559 front shock absorber is not suitable for the Scout with its off-road suspension, as it appears to have the same uncompressed length as the Bilstein B6 front shock absorber. It also doesn't say that it is a suitable replacement for the OEM number 5Q0413023GB.

It may be that Skoda shock absorbers would be better than aftermarket, if as I suspect no one is doing a close aftermarket match.

Maybe change the Scout to standard ride height with springs and shock absorbers from the 4x4 with standard ride height?

I can't believe the info: fantastic! I'l spend my lock down Saturday night reading through it all with a glass of something.

I checked spring today, it's 5Q0511115 AL, and 12.5 mm thickness, the softer of the three options. Label still attached. The only colour dot was a single yellow one. So, I may try to get 2 x  AN or equivalent to stiffen things up. Many thanks.

IMG_2476.thumb.jpg.d15a6a1f942db5434d316ce925b4d9b9.jpgIMG_2455.thumb.jpg.346e72194a13ecc2c534c5ede54806fc.jpg

Having the softest of the three different rear springs makes the problem very easy to solve.

You may find that just fitting a new 5Q0511115AL would improve things if the original spring has started to sag, so maybe consider the middle 5Q0511115AM spring, but if you feel that you need more than a small increase in stiffness then the hardest spring would be the one to go for.

I've looked at the actual photos of all three springs on the gknautomotive website, and they all have about 8.5 coil turns and about the same uncompressed length. This makes it easy to do some maths to get a good idea of how much stiffer the medium and hard spring is compared to the softest spring.

The medium spring is about 4% stiffer than the softest spring, and the hardest spring is about 8% stiffer than the softest spring. So maybe your choice of the hardest rear spring would suit you best.

Sachs 992103 matches OEM part number 5Q0511115AN

https://www.autodoc.co.uk/car-parts/oem/5q0511115an?search=OEN+5Q0511115AN&supplier[0]=32

superbcarparts on ebay quoted me £100 for two Sachs 992102 rear springs that match OEM part number 5Q0511115AM so I expect they would also do the Sachs 992103 for a similar/same price.

I've used these on my last 3 Scouts - my boot is always full (farm vet) and the helper springs make a huge difference.

When the car is unladen (rarely) the rear sits a little high but handling is fine.

Simply sit inside the current springs.

and was very pleased with Autodoc service. Springs are to the spec discussed above. I fitted them last week, following the guides that are available on Youtube , etc. Just search for golf mk7 or all track. I did the job with axle stands and a trolley jack, and it was reasonable easy to get it all back together.  I recommend clean all the bolt threads before disassembly to ease things up.

The ride height is pretty similar un-loaded, but huge improvement when loaded - no sag. Definitely firmer on the rear, but I can tolerate that. I think handling is a bit sharper too, but I will get 4 wheel alignment done again soon to check things are OK. I still haven't towed yet, but I'm very pleased so far. For just over £100 it's great value too.

Many thanks for all the advice.

KYB RH6426 matching 1K0511115CT is about £50 for the pair on ebay, and can be used to replace 5Q0511115AN. The Sachs 992103 matching 5Q0511115AN is about £100 for the pair.

The VW group may be hiding the fact that some of their newer cars are using springs from their older cars, ie. using more than one OEM part number for what is essentially the same spring.

When cars get older, replacement aftermarket springs tend to get cheaper. Car manufacturers make a lot of money selling springs, often charging between £60 to £120 for just one spring. It's therefore in the car manufacturer's interest to hide the fact that some of the springs used on newer models are actually from older models...like in the examples above.

5Q0511115AN are the heaviest duty rear springs that Skoda list for the Octavia MK3 4x4 Scout. They aren't listed for the standard Octavia MK3 estate.
