Is any Octavia MK4 without fault?

@Theredbaron404 Welcome to the forum.

You must have been talking to the specially trained in the ways of the VW Group employees at the dealership.

They took it for a long enough test drive though.
The problem I suspect is that they work from a sheet and if the answer isn’t there then the fault mustn’t exist?

My dealer managed to fit a towbar on a non towbar prepped vehicle for 750.  This was for a detachable swan neck by witter.  There were no issues with regards electricals. The issue being mine was not rated on the vin plate with the GTW showing 0.  They should never had fitted it.

On a towbar prepped VRS diesel, they were going to fit a Skoda electrically retractable one for 950 pounds. Problem was they couldn’t get some of the parts and they were on back order from the supplier and had been since February.

So 2.5k sounds rather steep.  Even the other cheaper prices are eye watering  for a towbar!

But as you say, you’re sorted now on another car!

I have been informed by Skoda UK that my rejection has been accepted but still need paperwork completing.

A brief history of time:

ACC braking when I was in the exit slip road on the M1 with slower vehicles in lane 1;

Aircon with blue circle of death on a scorchio day with no option to change settings- full on or off;

passive safety systems inactive warning (resolved itself);

airbag warning requiring dealer software reset;

intermittent fault on the passenger side heated seat which the dealer couldn’t replicate or fault despite video footage;

driver’s side mirror motor failed;

satnav calibrated only in km (speedo in mph) awaiting the mythical fix;

over sensitive emergency brake warning when weaving through parked vehicles on estates;

unable to get comfortable at all despite the electric seat (not a fault but took time for me to realise the problem);

Positively the car is quiet, reasonably nippy and very economical (1.5 TSI SEL FE).

So the decision to reject the car is with Skoda UK not the dealership.

They have acted as middle men I believe. The dealer has accepted rejection but feedback has come via Skoda Uk.

No, your contract is with the dealership. The dealership is reimbursed by Skoda UK. Do everything through the dealership.

VWFS called today and gave me 2 options. Accept a 10% reduction in the monthly rental until the issue is fixed,  or hand the car back for a refund of all payments todate. Skoda dont have any idea what is causing the issues, or how to fix them. They wont offer a swap as the replacement car may have the same issues. Spoke to the dealership who can source a superb estate sel, but these are confirmed builds so cant change from standard sel specification.  Looks like im hybrid shopping tomorrow!

There's some good deals on Passat / Arteon at the moment. I went for the Tiguan myself a couple of months ago. It was a close run thing against the Arteon but I needed something that was a little bit shorter than an oil tanker.

You get decent build quality without the latest platform of electronics (when everything seemed to go wrong)

My SE L DSG 1.5 e-tec arrived yesterday. So far the only issue to come up and only as of this morning is the SOS error.

Apart from that all seems well so far. Annoyed that the drive mode is reset always back to normal as my pre FL Octy 3 stayed in the setting selected.

I also feel the emergency brake system is oversensitive, It has gone off with a warning (big red image in the virtual cockpit of, I think, a car crash) several times when there was nothing actually in my path - maybe nearby on the left or the right but no danger.

Luckily for me it has never applied the brakes that I can detect.

Am I right in saying that for some of you it actually does an anchors-out full-stop? And it cannot be turned off, right? Unlike the equally over-sensitive Lane Assist.

That would indeed be a cause for rejection if it could not be fixed on the first visit to the dealer.

All these warnings amaze me. It is bit like my wife nervously warning me of various traffic situations. Like how did I manage to stay alive for 53 years and a million plus kms of motoring without her (or the car's) assistance.

If I could turn them all off I probably would

Thinking about buying one mk4 but these fault reports make me a bit worried. I understand that probably I won't be the one that suffers from that but anyway I'm willing to find out a bit more about that.

Are these considered to be serious errors? Basically I don't care much about navigation, info system etc. If engine works fine, lights are on, aircon works nicely then that's not the worst case. I understand that you might expect everything to be 100% perfect for a brand new car but in case (I hope it won't happen for me) something is not fine, I'd like these faults to be minor ones, not stalling engine or like that.

I would be cautious, even the aircon is laggy and does it’s own thing at times on mine. It’s all controlled by the same software system that’s driving the over sensitivity in the collision system, lane control and acc.

Hopefully, the software update that I hear is coming should resolve this. Which would be ace, as apart from the bonnet release that was missing and the clunky transmission between electric and ice (which to be fair is disappearing now, maybe as it wears in) and the rattle???? It’s not a half bad car. Comfy and drives incredibly well, if not quite as planted as the 330e. But still decent enough. If you go for the VRS IV it’s got enough mid range punch to make you smile from time to time.

It's all gone quiet on here ,has the silver bullet arrived from VW whilst I was snoozing ?

I have 1803 SW and just seen an update over the air. It did not say what it was , it did however have a space to tell you what the update was but no one at Skoda bothered to list the changes. Ill do their beta testing again.

So far tho 1803 is near prob free apart from sat nav forgetting and climate 22 degrees forgetting

Nothing major is included in this update. Already updated mine this morning.

I had the virtual cockpit fill up with the red warning, with nothing in front or to either side, and yep it slammed the brakes on and tried to bring me to a complete halt for no reason.

As I have mentioned before, it doesn't bear thinking about that happening at 70mph on a motorway, in the rain, on a curve, and yeah let's throw in 'at night' for good measure.

If it can happen for no reason at around 20mph it could happen for no reason any other time.

No, infact it’s even more laggy on screens that previously had no issues. Such as the charge and drive modes screen.

Happened to me at a junction - absolutely no reason for it.

I have had the same thing...has happened to me on three occasions.

It seems that you have the previous generation (Mark III). Is this a long-standing issue then? Or were you in the latest generation, e.g. on a test drive?

Didn't notice anything like that. For me it looks like everything is the same as it was.

No, the decision to reject is with the customer, who informs supplying dealer and gives list of faults.   The dealer then has one chance to rectify them (all of them).   One go, not multiple tries at fixing them.

Either all the faults are sorted and no rejection happens, or dealer can only fix some, (or claims to need to try again as couldn’t do it) then the rejection can be automatic, and don’t even need to collect the faulty car.

Some dealers will try and delay things and fob you off, but they are not following the law.  Your contract with dealer is under consumer law and is completely separate from any commercial contract between the dealer and Skoda UK.   If the dealer claims they need to await for approval from Skoda UK it is simple lie (they are legally unconnected, so not dependant on each other).  How and when dealer gets reimbursed from Skoda UK is not your problem, and not relevant to your rejection timetable, because you are outside the commercial contract with Skoda UK.

Hello Fellow Members,

I purchased a MKIV Octavia Vrs in January 2021. I have had a road trip Upto Scotland, trip to Norfolk. Done almost 3000 miles, no software problems. Car runs fine.

I have previously owned a MK1 and a MK2 both totally reliable.

The MK2 I had for 12 years sold with original brake pads and exhaust

A very happy Skoda driver.

I have been searching on the web and see that it has been occurring with multiple makes - not just VAG - over the last few years

The page - https://comma-ai.medium.com/aeb-a-case-study-using-comma-ai-dataset-2fc08a2397f4 - shows (as videos) some sample situations that can trigger false positives.

- approaching a turning vehicle, although even you are aware of it and are trying to go around it

- passing under an overhead metallic structure or road signs

- even approaching a light plastic container (or small animal) that you would have been happy to run over

- approaching a steel road plate, or perhaps a speed bump

My feeling is that it has occurred to me when there is no obvious cause but perhaps something was stationary in another lane, presenting no risk to my vehicle.

This article from 2018 - https://www.caranddriver.com/features/a24511826/safety-features-automatic-braking-system-tested-explained/ contains this summary of what must still be the official attitude:

"In 2015, NHTSA opened a yearlong investigation into 95,000 Jeep Grand Cherokees following reports that the SUVs were braking for no reason. The probe turned up 176 complaints of inexplicable emergency braking, but the agency found no defects and ultimately decided not to issue a recall. For the moment, these annoyances simply have to be tolerated by automakers and their customers. "From a technological perspective, if you'd like to reduce the rate of false positives, the rate of false negatives [crashes in which AEB does not activate] has to go up, and vice versa,"

I guess it is a bit like the official attitude to Covid vaccines. We know they have adverse effects for a tiny number of people but you should get vaccinated for the good of the vast majority, including yourself.

Except that no country so far forces you to get the vaccine, yet most countries and auto manufacturers force you to have AEB fitted however it seems we can disable it. That is Front Assist, right? So we can add that to our start-up ritual: Start/stop OFF, Lane Assist Off, Front Asist OFF, Mode = individual (to get fake engine noise OFF).

This page describes similar problems in US VWs. - http://www.vwproblems.com/front-assist-defect/ - including 8th generation Golfs which is basically the same technology as our Skodas.

Another page - https://lemonlawexperts.com/nissan-faulty-braking-system/ - shows similar faults in recent US Nissans.

Guys, I've 10 month old had my MK IV Octavia 1st edition combi for 3 weeks now. I'm beginning to regret it as the monitoring systems are playing up. I have had the following faults reported all of which self clear after turning the car off for about an hour. Auto start, hill assist failed. Parking assist failed, Restraint system failed. Any ideas if these are logged in the ECU so when I take it back to the dealer they can see what I'm talking about?
