Car purchased some quick queries.

Featured Replies

Firstly hiya and hello, newb alert. I have just put down a deposit on an Octavia estate to dip my toe, the specific car was not the first choice but if all goes well I might commit next year into something a bit newer. The car has a couple of niggles, the first one being it only comes with one key (buying from a dealer). Are these at all problematic to replace and is there a rough estimate on cost?

And secondly the infotainment didn't appear to have mirrorlink (too early for smartlink I think as a 2014 car). This is an annoyance and I wonder is it likely a software update at a dealer or a head unit change if I want to have the facility? (I don't have access to the car again till next week to check model).

Otherwise the car is pretty solid and I look forward to seeing if we get along.

Cheers.

I don't think the MIB1 headunit fitted to a 2014 car will support mirrorlink or smartlink :(

As for the keys, it'll probably be £200-300 for a 2nd one so I'd push the dealer to include one for free or at least heavily discounted.

Perhaps you've had a read of the forum during this purchase process. A few things below to check.

Make sure they give you the genuine Skoda SAT NAV SD card as you cannot use it without one.

On a plus is its been "used" at the mileage which is good the diesel engine generally.

It should have had a cambelt change by now.

I would highly recommend you check the colour of the coolant in the coolant expansion tank. It should be bright pink.

I would check after its being warmed up you have heating on both the drivers and passengers side, wack the heating dials up to check this. Read this thread for further info.

They're excellent cars. My 2015 1.6 tdi has just done 191k and is only now starting to show niggles. I've just paid a deposit on a replacement 2020 1.5 Tsi

Cheers for the replies, the sat nav was working whilst I tested it, I didn't actively set any destination but the mapping was working and tracking along so I just assumed all was ok. The coolant looked good and the fella that owned it prior kept all receipts so I can see it has had the cambelt and water pump changed plus pretty consistent servicing. Is there anyway to get the online records at all? Cannot check anything else now as I won't see it again till pickup next Friday.

Couple of little things I noticed are missing. The cup holder which fits into the console between the seats & the protective plug insert for the cigarette lighter.

As these are missing make sure you have all the tools in the spare wheel well especially the wheel security socket.

You need a MIB2 from mid 2015 onwards (probably 2016 model year).

There's been many posts on here about MIB2 retrofitting - basically you'll need a new screen, new main unit (in the glovebox), all FeC (Feature Codes) reenabling and CP (Component Protection) removing.

Sorry, meant to say the phone holder is missing.

Good tip, I was actually a bit too casual this time checking the bits as I didn't go with the intention of buying it as daft as that sounds. The infotainment can stay as it is then, that seems like far too much when I'll likely change it out for a newer one next year if I like it.

Thanks for the replies, all useful.

Online service records can be found on Erwin site.

https://erwin.skoda-auto.cz/erwin/showHome.do

You need to create a login and use the VIN number to find the records.

Happy days its had regular servicing.

Like others have said, cracking cars and the 2.0 TDI is just a effortless to drive. I get +50mpg all day long (brim to brim properly calculated) with mixed driving.

Cheers all, picked it up and it hasnt took long to get used to driving, it feels pretty solid, certainly an upgrade over the old focus. The infotainment appears to be the Columbus unit with the big screen?  The coolant looks good but looks like the dual chamber, no spare wheel (stupid foam and pump and I have the locking wheel nut in the car. Overall pretty happy so far.

Some pics of the bits mentioned.

Are your niggles on your 2015 Octavia age or mileage related. I have a 2016 1.6 TDi with only 49k.

Hi Sload, welcom to the forum - did the dealer supply you with a 2nd key? Some Timsons branches are able to code replacement at half the price Langers quoted.

Welcome @Sload that is a MIB1 Columbus so as mentioned no smartlink but maps are on the unit so no faffing with SDs in the Glovebox for maps. If you do a search on here or go to the Skoda update portal and pop in your vin you will be able to update the maps, just need to download the update (unzipped) to an SD or usb drive.

There is a newer software version as well but that's a bit more involved, to correctly update it and show no errors you need to update a coding parameter with VCDS or similar. Unless experiencing some issues probably better leaving that.

Missing phone holder I wouldn't worry about, the one that comes with a 2014 doesn't really fit many modern phones in it anyway, a newer one was released with the facelift that does.

The only reason I mentioned the phone holder missing was to highlight that other more important things may be missing.

The infotainment system has impressed me tbh, it covers everything I was after really as the BT audio works great for all audio from my phone and the nav system (minus the postcode search) is actually pretty solid. My rack feet have arrived so I have external transport for bikes, the boot cover is ordered, just need to get mats and a replacement coolant bottle (going to try the local dealer first) to put those to bed.

Two new issues though, It looks like the grill is already cracked, I think it happened literally on the drive home so rather ****ed at that, and a small rattle has developed, not in time with engine revolutions though so likely a cover or something silly I hope.

Postcode search is on there, you have to go into town and then the button is on the bottom left corner of the screen. Think it says Ptcd or something like that. I have a MIB1 Columbus as well and no issues with postcode search.

Yep, found it so thanks for the directions (pun not intended).

Coolant looks fine from the pic but for peace of mind and if you're going to sell on in 12 months and don't want to attract an unnecessary bill it's worth changing. My heating went south 3 days after cambelt change. Garage flushed it twice and partially recovered it but it's not 100%.  Part number is 5Q0121407M was £24 Inc vat on the bill for the flush.

Forgive me for asking what may be a silly question, is that paid access? Am I able to download copies if I pay for an access slot?

Cheers for the part number on the reservoir.

Yes and yes. Buy a 1 hour subscription for a few Euros and download ALL the documents about your car (by VIN) to to your PC as pdf files - then you have everything you need without having to pay again

@PetrolDave I've never paid to just "view" my service records. And it shows detail of additional work/parts. When last looked it shows "toothed belt" in additional work service record when I had my cambelt done at an independent.

@Sload  paid  access will be for service/repair manuals but I'm no Erwin guru.

@paulskiI'm not talking about service records, I'm talking about repair manuals, wiring diagrams, etc. - as near as you can get to a workshop manual.
