Been offered £22k for Mk3, would I be mad to go for a Mk4?

Featured Replies

I'm now slightly over 6 months in and i'll be getting rid of this before I reach the full year.

In the past month i've had:

ESC & TC switch themselves off of their own accord.

Auto emergency stop system trigger at *ahem* 70mph on a dual carriageway with nobody around me within a mile.

No heating/vents able to be turned on (everything on the screen unavailable or showing as off, regardless of how many times i powercycled the system) with front demist and rear heating element also not functioning.

Repeated complete failure of Combined parking assist, front assist and manouevre braking.

High beams switching themselves on with a mind of their own ( eg. inner city in a lit area).

TPMS goes off at least once a week, despite tyres always being checked immediately with a portable tire pressure unit and coming up fine.

The Infotainment has to be reset once a week otherwise the SOS Call crap rears its head.

Some times it won't even power the starter motor, will just power on the infotainment and not take it any further.

And then the piece de resistance? An "emergency" appointment with the dealer is a 7 WEEK wait.

Why in gods name would you want to buy into that when you've got a (i assume) perfectly functional mk3?

This is a new definition of "emergency"; one with which I have not previously been acquainted. ;)

I am astounded by it myself, previous cars/brands an emergency appointment was within 48 hours of calling.

Don't blame you. I got rid of mine after around 7 months (Hit the reject button at 4 but they took their time). 7 weeks is just stupid but not surprising.

I picked mine up in Sept 2020 and reported problems the day after. (KPH, matrix lights, misc software carp) and they just don't seem to have any urgency. I don't think they even have the expertise. The matrix lights went in 3 times for them to assess a problem that only occurs at night whilst driving and they tested it against their MOT wall

As for the KPH issue, people are still waiting on the fix now and that's coming up to 17 months since I picked the car up and first reported it!

I finally got around to getting rid of mine whilst it's still worth a decent amount of money. Got 3K more than what I paid for it.

I'm now the VERY HAPPY owner of a new Superb Sportline 2.0 TSI DSG. I don't miss the Octavia one bit to be honest.

In the Superb EVERYTHING works

A slightly redacted copy of the email that I sent to the dealer this morning, well 0045!

Hi [redacted]

It's nothing you have done, it's just the amount of chats that I have had with Mk4 owners who have been forced to reject their cars because of the large number of technical issues with software and their cars having to have significant hardware items replaced because of faults.

There are issues with speeds being shown in Kilometers per hour instead of Miles per hour, headlights having the wrong focus for this country, camera issues, adaptive cruise not allowing them to pass on the inside of other traffic without slamming the brakes on, emergency brake applications at speed and random for no reason (downright dangerous), SOS calls being made at random, infotainment systems being replaced and the list goes on.

It's taken a year to get my car sorted out and it's working well at the moment and I'm relatively happy with it, although I don't trust it one jot, but it's working and that is the main thing.

Like I have said with all of the significant issues that I know about from Mk4 owners are having and Skoda not giving a damn about sorting these pretty major and significant problems out with these critical systems and also from what I can see of it, treating owners not only with contempt, but as guinea pigs to test their software and hardware out on, I don't want to take the risk on a car that has so many problems.

So I hope that you can understand why I don't want to proceed with it, because I could find myself in the same position as they've been in that I would have to reject the car, leaving me with no car at all.

If and when they actually get the cars critical systems working properly and reliably with none of the problems I have mentioned occurring, I'll consider having one.

So for the meantime I'm keeping my existing car.

Yours.

[Redacted]

Although I wrote differently in my posts above and to be completely honest, I guess I wouldn't buy one neither if I were in the same position as you. Especially if you already have a nice car you can enjoy.

I hope you can get yourself one once they sort out all the issues.

@TheWanderer - To clarify, I like the tone of your e-mail, rather than the fact that you felt compelled to write it.

I’d be stunned if they even got as far as paragraph 2 before deleting. But whatever makes you feel better.

If you’re having trouble free driving with your current car then don’t think of upgrading to a mk4. There are too many issues with them.

it’s a shame how quick Skoda quality has gone down the drain.

Just because some cars have some issues doesn't mean every car has them. My Mk4 has been trouble free.

I don't think he said every car has issues. He was correctly highlighting the significant number of issues that they have had and many still have. Just because your car hasn't had any yet, it does not mean they don't exist.

my mk 4 is has no problems at the moment, fingers crossed.i think you will find less and less people are having problems with there software.so that is good news for new skoda owners.

Didn't say it literally, but he/she told someone to stay away from buying a car because of earlier ones having issues. That to me sounds like he/she is saying the car will have issues and to stay away from it for that reason, when the car could very well be trouble free. I'm not denying the issues just because I have not experienced them, I'm just surprised when people tell strangers to explicitly stay away from something like that, especially since the person who said it is driving an early MY20 car, the ones with the most issues. In newer production cars, the issues have been mostly ruled out already.

If new owners are having less trouble that’s all well and good. For those that bought 20 & 21 reg cars that can’t get them sorted with well documented issues it doesn’t say much for Skoda re customer service. Get your cash then ****  you off.

Into my eighth month of ownership now with one minor software glitch that I fixed myself. I did ask for a dealer appointment and one was offered with a three day wait. No complaints here at all and love my car.... just kick myself every morning for not getting alcantara seats ... tho maybe I’d still been waiting for that option. I did get pano and Canton, both of which remain epic and make me smile every day

I would be amazed if anyone with significant issues with a Mk4 would say anything but stay away from them! Poor customer care, and car issues, I cant see anyone with those sort of issues recommending a brand or model. Clearly those without the c@@p customer care and issues would possibly recommend it, it goes on your personal experience. As I have said many times in the last 12 months, I love the car, but I can't recommend Skoda as a brand to friends because of the poor customer care I have experienced, or the Mk4 until ALL the issues are fixed. The big problem is trying to find a car that is better value for money, atm.

The trouble is people who have no problems don’t tend to search the internet for forums to comment! I hope those with problems are a real minority

Hello All,

Had my mk4 diesel vs since January 21. Only problems I have had has been sat nav, all addresses  being off road and the odd braking when car going left around corner. Other than that very pleased with the car.  Getting 57mpg generally.

It's not the 'issues' and my car has and still has many it's the complete and utter contempt for owners and their problems shown by VAG and Skoda. My car is 16 months old and STILL has problems they don't appear willing or able to fix.

I think it'll be Japanese or Korean next for me.

i got my car 27/07/2022,i was very pleased with it.yes i had a few problems with it[soft ware]i got in touch with skoda who said they would look into it,then the next day all was fine with the car and i thought everything was sorted by over the air updates.but in the last couple of days, screen going blank with no sat nav music in fact sweet fa.it keeps coming on but a lot of the time it tells  me to scan things which i have no idea what it is going on about.when i put my foot down the noise it generates is like a tractor pulling away.the car drives great unless i put it in echo mode which to me is dodgy thing to do because when you put your foot down the lag is dangerous imo.it looks like a visit to the garage when i have time which should not happen imo.why skoda have not been back in touch i do not know.,tonight i popped down the road and the red crash warning is popping up and a yellow warning about near side.it is starting to annoy me and when you get a car that came out well over a year ago they have not sorted the problems the car has have had ,since it came out is beyond me.putting it mildly it ****es me off[sorry about that]but this whats happens when you get a car that is not working right and NO response off skoda.good night
