CUP and CUN

Featured Replies

So then guys im contemplating replacing my engine as im having a lot of issues. My current engine code is CUP. After having a long search and talking to a few people they have said that the CUN engine is completely the same and should be a straight fit. Ive tried to search for more info but cant find anything whatso ever. Anyone on here that can confirm thos for me?

Thanks

Be helpful to have more details of your car - model, year, engine size, gearbox (manual or DSG).

Maybe the three letter code you have quoted is incomplete?

Yep 2.0 diesel 184 bhp

Maybe you’re trying to replace TDI184 CUPA with TDI184 CUNA? The latter is covering higher emissions standard - Euro 6. Vs Euro 5 on CUPA.

The software they use is different, the gearbox and other stuff is almost if not the same.

CUPA is usually fitted on earlier MK3 VRS TDIs and many owners of it observe high oil consumption. Whereas on CUNA this rarely happens. Not sure exactly why.

Mine is a CUNA and a MY16 build. It uses oil slightly above spec but it doesn't cause me any worries.

I know this is an old thread, but I stumbled across it and just wanted to advise that ye, don't fit a CUNA. I have a vRS MY17 66 plate with a CUNA and trust me, they have engine oil issues too.

It really depends how old the engine is and on what maintenance plan was it. Extended oil change intervals with combination of a lot city driving causing many DPF regens and oil dilution.

I bought a used 2016 vrs tdi earlier this year with a CUNA engine and that thing is guzzling on oil like an alcoholic is guzzling on booze... My car is driving just fine altho it does act a bit weird at times like very often high idle RPMs (possibly struggling with regens), as I mentioned oil is pretty much disappearing etc. I went to Skoda service for a diagnosis a week ago and in short they didnt go into too much detail, just pretty much told me that my engine and turbo are cooked and handed me a 20k€ repair offer.... Yeah... And talked with a mechanic that repairs DPFs and turbos in those and explained me that these specific engines have a very bad map on them in short basically making them "destroy" themselves, rings get fried, thing burns oil, sh_t goes into the DPF clogging it, stuff goes back into the engine, all that drags turbo along with it, repeated mess of a process... Idk dont shoot the messenger lol.

Edit: apparently the car was maintained well and has service history, but who knows who and what did to it...

This is what mine was doing. Long journey and the DPF light would come on, exactly the opposite of what should happen. The engine would idle at 1k revs, smoke would then come out the exhaust if left idling for a while. The dealer I bought it from fitted a new turbo, but it did nothing, I took it to a specialist and they quoted £3k to repair, but fortunately I was able to reject the car and got most of my money back.
