Superb III Sportline 190 suspension wallowing and pothole bumps

Featured Replies

Hi

I realise the 235/40 R19 aren't ideal but it's there any way i can improve the ride? Every pothole is a potential cracked alloy and road undulations particularly cause the whole car to respond in kind sometimes even grounding out. I tried to select the sportiest suspension in custom mode. Anything help gratefully received.

TIA

Changing to 215/60R16 tyres fitted to 6.5Jx16 ET41 rims will transform the ride.

The only Superb MK3 that 16" rims won't fit are those fitted with the big 340mm front disc brakes, such as the 272PS/280PS 4x4 versions.

These rims are about £150 new, and good tyres to fit are about £100 each. So about £1,000 for a set of four. However, you should be able to sell your current 19" wheels to offset the cost.

If you used DCC it should stop it wallowing as much as comfort mode. If you haven't got DCC sport mode will do nothing.

Would they be the same outside diameter? I notice the tyres are cheaper and i need cross climate 3PM+S to go skiing. Can i buy the rims in the UK?

U have DCC if u have 5 driving modes - Eco, Comfort, Normal, Sport and Individual.

In Individual, it will show u a DCC setting.

215/60R16 has the same outside diameter as 235/40R19. Both sizes are approved by Skoda for the Superb MK3.

Take a photo of the inside of your fuel filler flap, as the details are easier to view on a computer screen.

You should see these sizes, and the other two approved sizes 215/55R17 and 235/45R18, and the tyre pressures.

There are two 16" steel rim options on mytyres. The 16" steel rims weigh about 8kg each, whereas the 16" alloy rims weigh about 10kg each. So the 16" steel rim options will save about 8kg in unsprung weight compared to the 16" alloy rim option.

The 16" alloy rim option that I linked to earlier, has OEM part number 3V0071496. You should be able to order these from any Skoda dealer, if you prefer these to the lighter weight and stronger steel rim options.

I do I'll recheck the individual setting which is what i sideways use

If the car is wallowing and grounding occasionally, then there is also possibility that it is :

overloaded

tyre pressures wrong

have damaged spring or damper

shock absorbers need replacing

wallowing is soft springs, the Superb is specified more as a limo than a sports car (Sportline trim is a look, doesn’t mean gets sports car handling)

If DCC is not fitted, then sport mode only really changes gearbox change up points, has no effect on suspension

Seeing it's 2020 14000 miles i guess that's how it's made. It really doesn't cope with mild long undulating bumps where it grounds out even. I realise it's more a limo and in all otter aspects it's Superb but really let down by the wallowing perhaps it should be rebadged SKODA Hippo mk III.

Yes the Superb is a big car that has wallowy suspension.

U can fix it by doing a few of these things to address it:-

- firmer springs, lowered or not.

- aftermarket shocks

- aftermarket rear swaybar

- DCC recalibration

H&R springs will fix a lot of that. Then koni special active shocks if the budget will stretch

Hi, can I ask why you recommend the springs first? Was thinking of going straight to upgraded dampers as not bothered about cosmetic benefits of lowering, keen to keep ride height and possibly more insurance friendly (thinking special active or B6). My car isn't a sport line. Thanks!

Hi.

If you have any issues with insurance at all for modifications then please feel free to drop me a line.

Regards,

Dan.

I can agree that the Superb sportline plus that we have is wallowy car, the Volvo xc70 it replaced was also wallowy but not quite as bad, we did have new front struts and springs replaced which did improve things in that respect.

The Volvo was a heavier car and possibly more nose heavy due to the d5 engine, it also had rear self leveling suspension, no doubt that helped firm it up a bit.

At the moment I was more confident on twisty roads wityh the Volvo tha the Superb, tyres are aso a factor , we had Michelin cross climate fitted and it felt much improved over the Pirelli scorpions that were fitted previously.

Martin.

On the right hand side of your centre console, if you have DCC it will have a button that says “mode” with a car symbol. It will be above start/stop deactivation and below traction control (if memory serves me).

Yes i do but no mention of DCC in the manual or in the individual mode customisation. Do superbs ever have DCC?

Pretty sure that's just for drive mode selection. Given @BPL has no comfort mode or option to change DCC, I'd say they don't have DCC :)

Some VW's get a button for DCC but I've never seen one in a Skoda:

Mode on mine alters steering weight, throttle response and damper rates, depending on suspension setting chosen.

Exactly - it selects the drive (driving?) mode :)

@BPL - looks like u don't have DCC
DCC is not standard across the Superb range.  It's standard on the L&K models, and its available as an option in other markets, and some trims (possibly).

more on DCC here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mpV-YChUivY

When u press the Driving mode button (centre console), it will also show there if u have DCC or not.  "DCC/Driving Mode"
