Karoq Space Saver

Has anyone been able to get a lightweight (cheaper) spacesaver steel wheel + tyre?  Aquired for my previous Yeti, I've got a really heavy ex golf space saver wheel at the moment with an unused tyre that is now far too old to be safe.  I tried emailing MyTyres about getting a space saver, but couldn't get through to them.  Is there a way of making contact with them?  I was hoping to order soon a set of 4 x 16" wheels fitted with all weather tyres via there website and add a spacesaver to that order.

Will a full-size 215/60R16 fit in the spare wheel well?

Space savers are expensive and heavy. Space saver tyres are heavy because the tyre has to be reinforced (like a van tyre) so that it can be inflated to about 4 Bar (60psi).

Someone was saying that a full-size 215/60R16 will fit in the spare wheel well if the Karoq is 2WD, but not if it's 4WD.

Below is a link to a new 1K0601027AP on ebay, but you should be able to order a new one from a Skoda parts department.

The 125/70R18 space saver tyre has about a 5% smaller outside diameter than the normal Karoq tyres, such it might be better to fit a 135/80R18 space saver tyre which closely matching the outside diameter of the Karoq's 215/60R16, 215/55R17, and 215/50R18 tyre sizes.

Thanks for that Carlston, some very useful information and opened up my range of options.  I didn't realise all space savers were so heavy.  I'm changing my 2WD Karoq from 17" to 16" wheels with AW tyres, now the Turanzas are down to 5mm after 18,000+ miles after 3 years (primarily interested in improving ride & road noise).  One option would be to use one of the existing 17" Turanza fitted alloys as a spare.  Better though would be to buy that 5th 16" Alcar wheel with matching AW tyre, directionality etc. permitting.  I would then somehow include the spare as part of the annual tyre swap-around ritual.

Full size wheel / tyre combos will be 30mm taller in the boot than a space saver - but maybe I can live with that.

I'm still thinking of going for Hancock AW tyres as in reviews, they do well in the wet & seem to be one of the best for interior road noise, but if directional, could always order a non directional other make AW tyre for the 5th wheel, so that it can fit on any axle.  (Still better than a space saver I reckon)

I wonder if the 16" wheel + tyre would work with the official Skoda spare wheel kit that you show a pic of in the 2nd entry of this thread (maybe even a bit shaved off to accommodate the slightly bigger diameter tyre.   I didn't know that this kit was readily available and now want to get one, as my current ex old Golf space saver fixing is a bodge - doesn't hold the wheel down properly for starters.

Have you or anyone else actually ordered stuff form MyTyres recently, i.e. since Brexit - wondering if there are delivery problems.  Also wondering if the Alcar 6665 wheel is a true ET43 or does it come with plastic spacers, like the 16" alloy wheels I got for the previous Yeti some years ago (different supplier).

I think you need the 16” 6.5j wheel officially for the Karoq? That is what I am using for my winter tyres.

I bought these for my prior Yeti and found out later that these were not the correct wheel for a Yeti but fortunately are exactly right for the Karoq. Yeti should have had 7j wheel really.

Ken, I thought the officially correct width for 16" wheels on the Karoq was 6J, at least that's what I recall has been frequently said in this forum.  For example, see message by smipx, half way down 1st page of this thread    (https://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/498958-tyre-replacement-for-karoq-15tsi-2wd-21550-r18-92w-limited-choices/#comments)

The Alcar 6665 steel rim is a true ET43, and also a true 6J.

  • 1 year later...

Hi all.

I've read this thread with great interest as we are about to order a Karoq 2.0 150 Tdi 4x4.

We live 18 miles up a Glen in the Cairngorms along a single track road. There is zero mobile reception until we are almost out of the Glen. We get snow and ice regularly in winter. Potholes frequently form deep enough to eat a tyre, especially a space saver.

For these reasons a tyre repair kit is hopeless. A conventional space saver, which Skoda will supply, is not much better. I want to carry a full 215/50 R18 spare instead.

If I don't order a spare of some sort I'll not get a jack or brace.

If I order the standard space saver I'll not have room for the full size wheel (or will I)?

What wheel and tyre should I order and can anyone recommend a supplier.

Can I fit a 4x4 "mud and snow" type tyre (to get the traction and the greater carcass strength)?

Any advice on how to go about it?

First I suggest you purchase the foam and jack kit for the Karoq 4x4. This includes everything except for the actual spare wheel. There is a limitation to note, which is that it's only for Karoq 4x4 vehicles with a basic boot floor and standard fitted rear seats. The OEM part number is 57A093860C. If you give this OEM part number to a VAG parts department they should be able to order it in for you. Once purchased and fitted, you will be able to work out what size spare will fit...particularly with regard to the inflated width of the tyre.

The tyres on the Karoq 4x4 have slightly bigger outside diameter tyres compared to the Karoq 4x2. It doesn't use the 215/50R18 tyre size, as shown in the charts below.

Karoq 4x2 tyre sizes

225/50R18

This is a Mud and Snow tyre, and also has the 3PMSF symbol so is officially winter rated. 235/60R16 has a similar outside diameter (within 0.5%) to the standard Karoq 4x4 225/45R19 tyre size.

The Karoq 4x4 doesn't use a 215/60R16 tyre size. That's a Karoq 4x2 tyre size.

Thanks.

That kit would set me up nicely and,as you say, I could then get a suitable wheel and tyre elsewhere. 👍

You might find that only a space saver wheel will fit, as the 4x4 system will often eat into the space for the spare wheel. If so, 135/80R18 would be a better match to the outside diameter of the Karoq tyre sizes. It could be fitted to the same space saver rim that the more common 125/70R18 uses, ie. on a 3.5Jx18 ET25.5 5/112 57.1 steel rim.

You might think that a 135/80R18 is 10mm wider than a 125/70R18, but when both are fitted to a 3.5J rim the 135/80R18 is actually only about 7mm wider than the 125/70R18.

Example of 135/80R18 space saver tyre

One of my previous cars was a Subaru XV, and, on asking about a spare it seemed you had to place a special order for a factory fitted alteration to the floor. Even then, the luggage floor was balanced on top of the spare, which was full size, and steadied with rubber strips to hold level. If a space saver was obtained elsewhere, the spare had to go on the back - a right palaver if the puncture was a front tyre - like playing musical chairs!

You will need a space saver on a 4x4 - the Haldex unit is under the spare wheel well and takes the space a full size wheel would need.

There are ways of fitting a full spare in the 4x4 boot.  Not orthodox but works for us. 👍

😲   Looks like the parcel shelf won't sit flat? Doesn't a raised shelf block the view thru the rear window?

It’s pretty flat, with the hatch open the RHS is still a little raised.  But once the tailgate is closed it holds the load cover in place nicely and no view through the back is lost. 👍

Quick update:

Car ordered last week, due early May.

I'll discuss official tyre options with the dealer once build starts.

I ordered the space saver and I'll look at options to put something bigger in the space once it's here.

Thanks for all the advice, much appreciated.
