New battery time, recommendations?

Battery is knackered, any recommendations?  When I use car reg on parts finder price Bosche ranges from €130-€280. Is this a case of not buying cheapest option?

  • Just a heads up, The battery type may come up as Fleece, that is what you choose for an AGM battery. It is not Binary AGM.

  • Got to give a shout for Tayna Batteries. Ordered new battery late afternoon yesterday (Fri), and received it at 09:20am today.

What's the physical size of the battery?

It's probably 175mm wide and 190mm high, but do check.

Then what is the length?

This varies in increments of about 1.5" (38mm). So could be 242mm long (about 60Ah capacity), 278mm long (about 70Ah capacity), 317mm long (about 80Ah capacity), etc.

What capacity is your current battery? The battery capacity should be labelled on the top of the battery.

Varta are good car batteries.

If you have stop/start, it's best to get an AGM battery as this will last longer than the cheaper type.

Varta are suggesting it's the 278mm long (70Ah battery).

Yep, go with Varta

Whatever battery you go for, 2 things you need to consider.

- Make sure the spec is the exact same, CCA, Ah, Battery type (AGM,EFB,LAB)

- Make sure you adapt the new battery to the vehicle (many people call it ‘coding’ the new battery but it’s not, you are clearing the old adaptations and letting the battery management system know a new battery is fitted and to start monitoring it differently) This can be done with the genuine tool ODIS or something like VCDS

If you want to take the easy road, Halford's installed and "coded" a EFB096 stop/start battery with a 5-year guarantee for me for £150 all in. Mind, that was March. It's probably twice that now.

http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/Battery_Replacement

If the car has Address 61: Battery Regul. then it's 'coded'

If that does not exist then you adapt it via Address 19: Gateway 'adaption'

90%+ of people I would estimate would be familiar with the word coding, not adaptation, hence why it's often used (even when strictly not true)

My mechanic has a Snap-On diagnostic thingyamejig.............I wonder would thie enable him to correctly install a battery for me???

I went down this route in July. Cost £200 and although it is Halfords branded, it is a Yuasa battery and comes with a 5 year guarantee.

Just fitted the Varta pictured earlier in this thread on Saturday. £147.00 delivered. Almost a like-for-like with the one that was to be replaced however they are now 70ah rather than 68ah .

Coded into the car with VCDS, but noticed that the previous stored battery data was for a JCB battery serial no. 11111111

Seems to have cured the non functioning Stop-Start system.

Did you make sure to adapt the new battery Ah also? Changing the gateways stored Ah from 68 to 70?

This is exactly what we ended up doing. Only place that we could get sorted on a Sunday and the car was needed first thing Monday morning. The AA came out to start the car, drove 20 mins to Halfords and the battery was dead as a duck when I got there. Interesting that there is no tapering in battery performance, it went from working fine to utterly failed within 48 hours.

Thanks for all the tips folks.

Yes, coded through 19-CAN Gateway UDS which allows easy change from 68ah to 70ah.

The old battery hadn't been coded in although the rating of 68ah was correct, it was listed as JCB rather than Varta and the serial no. was recorded as 11111111

The new battery didn't have a BEM sticker so I used the serial number from the old battery.

Have contacted the supplier about the missing sticker but they have not responded. This may mean a poor review from me.

My battery has given up and getting a new one from Tayna. However my battery is 275mm wide/long?. and the ones Tayna are quoting are all 278mm. Is there space to fit a longer battery, it's only 3mm difference. I'd like to know before ordering. TIA

Get a picture of existing battery and this can be checked, I doubt you will have issue fitting that replacement.

Just spoke toTayna customer service and they have assured me it will fit, so going ahead and ordering. I'm changing from EFB to AGM. I have an OBD11 and can adapt the battery to the car. The Enduro is on offer reduced from 129.95 to 113.34, so thinking of that, as another poster on here said he had good service from it. The OEM battery is a Banner EFB so comnsidering their AGM at 129.93. . Decisions, decisions. Happy days,

Well it sounds like an 096 size AGM to me.

Varta are one of the OEM suppliers to VAG vehicles, that's what I replaced mine with.

Ordered the Enduro. Yes, all the recommendations were for 096. Original battery didn;t have anything like that on it.

Three year warranty on the Banner.

I've had an Enduroline battery in another car and it was fine, for my wife's 2015 Fabia I put a Bosch (labelled, apparently Varta I was told) in and I might have considered the Yuasa.

Whichever you buy you might get a longer life from it, depending on your vehicle and its electrics use, by also using an appropriate battery charger minder.  This is just one example, other makes and suppliers available, 4 amps so slower than many others which is generally better for a better charge.  (£23.49 inc. P&P off eBay currently). - https://www.ringautomotive.com/en/product/RSC804

Hi NTA16, I have a Ctek charger designed for AGM, but thanks for suggestion.

@BillyParkerdoes your existing battery have the fabric heat shield around it?

If not you must fit that to keep heat away from AGM batteries.

Great stuff, many of those go at 3.7a IIRC, of course they do need to be used when needed and preferably before the battery is too flat, many forget prevention is better than cure and others think just driving the car will restore the battery every time.

4 years out of the factory battery shows how tight-fisted VW were and that they should have fitted a good quality AGM.  The factory fitted battery, when done properly, should be the longest lasting as it's working with everything from new on the car and not used and worn for latter batteries.  I thought changing at 6 years on my wife's car was very bad, though I could have made the battery last longer but as it was on my wife's car the hassle to monetary cost was too high to deal with.

Hi Varoom, I didn't know about the heat shield, I thought it was just a cover. Thanks for lettingme know. New battery is 3mm longer so should be ok (I hope).

NTA, mine will be 6 years old in March so looks like thats the life span for OEM fitting.

I wouldn't worry about the 3mm as dimensions are overall and it's more important to have the correct fitting 'base hold-down' (plastic foot bar) that the clamping clip goes on to.

6 years old, so it's not for your "Model: Superb SE L Executive Year: 2018"?

Maths was never my strong point at school and looks like it still isn't. Should read 5 years old.
