Tyres annoyance....

Featured Replies

Thy are the tyres for my 1.5TSi Superb Sportline more expensive (approx £40-50 per tyre) than my girlfriends Golf R:blink:

That's all

Because the Sportline is all looks, comes with uncommon tyre size for looks and vanity is expensive.

The versions with smaller wheels use common tyre sizes that are cheaper.  And if your local roads are more ruts and potholes, rather than as smooth as a billiard table those with deeper sidewalls ride much better.

Uncommon tyre sizes have other problems, lack of choice, unlikely to be any in stock at local tyre centre if you have a puncture etc.   If it annoys you plenty of other size wheels available, see attached (and then compare the price of the tyre size 215/55 R17 for the 17 inch wheel to your size)

I'm thinking of fitting 235/35 x 19 (same as Golf) compared to the standard 235/40x19 but I'm assuming it could mess up the insurance?

Planning on fitting an all season tyre as well

Better to go with 245/40/19. Smaller diameter change, more sidewall, more tyre width.

Changing size will require to tell insurance to be 100% honest and covered.

I went with these and absolutely love them, so much more quieter than the P7’s and had recently went through loads of massive puddles at 70mph and steering wheel hardly moved compared to the P7’s which was more scary

I got them from Camskill when they first come out at £150 per tyre but that’s just the tyre delivered, whereas Asda is full price so just chose your garage and done, just like blackcircles but that’s £196 fitted which is bonkers

+1 on changing to 245/40R19 tyres.

Plenty here in Oz have done it.

It's cheaper than 235/40, more common, and more comfortable.

Simple solution to this one .... Swap the wheels :)

Are they much quieter? I have 235/35's on my car and they're very noisy.

Definitely - the 245/40/19 is much quieter as it has a thicker sidewall than the stock 235/40/19.

Yup, ur 235/35/19 will b much more noiser.

It has a smaller sidewall than the stock (235/40/19), due to the smaller 35 profile.

Unfortunately, 235/35/19s are standard on 272/280’s.  I think I might well swap to 245/40’s when the P7’s finally need to be replaced. They’re at 37k and still with 3mm all round, so they’re on their last legs.

PS - Would the increase in profile make any significant difference to the indicated speed?

The profile is only one measure of the tyre size.

It will if not compensated by changing the size

It is the outside diameter of the tyre that affects the indicated speed.

Yes it will make a slight difference as the 245/40 has a larger circumference compared to the 235/40.

See tyre comparison below.

I found when I went up to 245/40 - the speedo reading was closer to the GPS speed.

Also, the 235/35/19 are NOT the standard size on the 272/280 models.

They also get the 235/40/19 size.  It's there on the tyre placard.

Doesn’t the larger profile increase the outside diameter?

It certainly does!

So probably would booger-up the speedometer. 🙄

235/35/19s are not OEM 272/280 tyre size as well bro. The OEMs size are 235/40/19.

245/40/19s are only 1.1% larger than the OEMs in diameter. While 235/35/19 are 4% smaller than OEMs.

And consider the speed shown on the speedometer is actually higher than real speed (100km/h on speedometer while the real speed is 97ish), go with 245/40/19 is a much better option than go with 235/35/19.

That's wat I said earlier too :)

Yeah, but what you need to understand I often talk utter bollo*ks and ****e! Where the heck I got that from is beyond me, but on this occasionI do have an excuse; I’m blaming the C19 booster and flu jabs I had yesterday PM and I feel I cr@p… 😂

Just get the eagle F1 asymmetric 6’s in default size, so much quieter than the P7’s, don’t need to tell insurance nor worry about it over-over reading, win win

I think the 235/35/19 are closer to Octavia size and a common upsize from stock 19s which I think are 225/35. The 17 and 18 tyres are certainly 225 width and 45/40 profile respectively.

Well I couldn't have been more wrong... Mine are 235/45 18's Goodyear asymmetric 5 and they're as noisy as hell I can't wait to be rid of them. Any suggestions?

Get the Asymmetric 6, much quieter than the 5.

Although I’ve never used the 5’s my father in law has them on his A4 and quiet loud.

One of my friends recently needed 4 tyres on his beemer and got 5’s on the front and 6’s on the rear due to needing them urgently but 6 wasn’t available in his size for the fronts (staggered sizes) as it’s a new tyres, he said the difference in sound is massive and much more quieter on the 6’s

Many thanks for that I'll certainly consider them when changing.

Yeah, I hear you, but in my experience with new tyres, unfortunately and annoyingly, in a few ‘000’s miles they’ll be just a noisy internally as the tyres they’ve replaced.
