MkIV Octavia VRS Audio upgrade - disappointing

Featured Replies

Thanks a lot for the feedback @bdavbdav

Yes yes, I do have the wiring diagram from EtKa for the infotainment unit, but I think it would be really useful to have a schema because the quadlock is split in different connectors. But not the real issue, you can track and match wires by colors.

Nope, speaker wires are straightforward, doubt is coming from the power side.

For example, if I finally go for the Axton A592DSP, you have PIN 1 for ACC-in. I would tend to connect that one to the signal cable going to the screen, but it’s not fully clear from the wiring diagram:

I assume S is for signal, green and blue wire, from the infotainment unit to the screen it that case, but there is no S explanation in the signal names chapter but SIG:

Call me picky 😜, but I do prefer doing the harness myself, because with an ISO harness + amp harness and considering that the amp is going to be close to the infotainment unit I do not want to finish with 60 cm of cables occupying space in an already tight area. I have a 20cm quadlock extension that I would cut/sold/isolate/tag as per needs.

Cheers

I also have the Axton A592 installed in my Octavia. I did use the IsO cable.

Do you plan to change the speakers also ?, because I am currently planning to change the stock speakers.

Yes, I do plan to change them from stock to Focal IC VW 165 both front and rear and isolate doors with Focal BAM.

On a second stage subwoofer in the spare wheel.

I see. I don't wanna go with those because they are 2 ohm. Don't think it's a good combination with an amplifier. Also someone said they tend to freeze when outside is cold.

Well, without being an expert on the subject, as per Amp tech specs, both 2/4 ohms impedance are supported:

Well, living in the south of France very low temperatures would not be a real problem. 🙂

Yes, but from what I've read you get a better sound quality with 4ohm. I think the 2 Ohm are made so that you get more without a amplifier.

Ok, now I understand, good point. I will take it into consideration. For the time being it's just a project ... and the car itself is on the market to be sold so ... maybe it will never happens.

How did you route the power for the sub?

Uf, for the time being, no sub installed, so no power, sorry.

I went with the cables from the battery under the dash through the firewall (there is a hole with a seal) and went on the left side of the car (removed the trim) all the way back under the back seat and In the boot

Ahh thanks - LHD or RHD and do you have a pic or a rough location where the hole was?

So first part is completed, IS VW 165 front and rear + doors and doors cards isolated with Focal BAM.

For sure it's better than stock, specially with sound at 50% of the gauge but maybe it lacks of ... power? when going up.

At this point I am not sure what to do ... either for the full amp + active subwoofer or just an active subwoofer but ... with just the subwoofer, from where to take signal? there is no low out from the infotainment so high out split is mandatory ... but then less power on speakers.

Hi, when you installed the axton 592 do you have to remove the - pole from battery or did you just remove the Quad lock and change it and back in.

Wondering about the lose of settings when disconnect the power.

Where can you purchase Focal BAM?

Actually those speakers are very capable, and it's relatively easy to achieve strong, deep bass in car due to it's size (low volume/low amount of air that needs to be moved).

In my case another improvement been brought be adding external amplifier. Used Axton 592DSP.

Cannot find my (rough) measurements, but by ear it goes below 30Hz, which is enough for me (mostly listening to rock and metal, so not much going on below this). It's also loud enough, and can be tweaked by using DSP in the amp.

Edit: found measurement screenshot. This is done using Android Audio Tool, and never learned how to make really good measurements, so it doesn't have any smoothing, it's very raw. Measurement taken using UMIK-1 mic.

As you can see it can go really low, and by tweaking amp's DSP result can be really good.

I prefer it this way, as most subwoofers doesn't really give you that quality of bass, that control (which in case of Focal's combined with Axton is really great, even metal that according to many is recorded poorly, sounds really great). Subwoofer will give you quantity, which might be desirable with some genres of music.

Hi @Felix2021 I have a question, how did you set up the axton?? I just installed the A594DPS and I'm having trouble with setting the rear speakers. :)

What kind of trouble?

A good tip for anyone else doing these type of installs, make sure you have the MIB reporgrammed to external Booster or DSP.

This disables most of the factory EQ's & rolloffs.

Without that modification, you'll get a very distorted signal that even DSP's struggle with.

How can we do that ?

For the Octavia 3 (i assume similiarly octavia 4 as it's all MQB), you can use VCDS and modify the speaker output type in 5F infotainment.

Once you set it to external booster, it will switch the speaker output to low level and flatten the signal. (there is still a slight roll off at full blast).

You can then remove the brown connector from the radio plug and insert your own.

Can i make the VCDS modification while the DSP is connected without messing with the plug ?

Yes, however your DSP will need to be retuned as it's no longer the same signal going in.
