Recovered Stolen car… now it gets hard..

Featured Replies

Just got back our 2016 Octavia VRS..

However it’s locked, we have no keys and can’t get in.

its 8 weeks for new keys and $600 Aussie $ plus programming…

Passenger side window is open approx 3” (75mm).

We can reach door lever but can’t open door as seems like battery is flat and can’t unlock.

Should we put charger on starter motor and earth to try and charge up so we can open then pop button? Or will alarm drive us nuts if we do this?

Have to replace guard, bumper and get passenger door repaired.

then we hope no damage is done to rest of car.

I imagine it will require power for local guy to program key to suit.

Any thoughts on best way to proceed would be welcome.

thanks

Sorry.. pop bonnet.

I would think it is deadlocked anyway so even with a charged battery releasing the inside door handle wont do anything.

I think you will probably have to take the Skoda route for the keys, I cant recall if there is any programming to do when you recieve the keys but the old ones will have been disabled, although thinking about it that would have to be done at the vehicle.

The cheaper cloning can only be done if you have a working key.

If you break the cheapest window glass and get inside the vehicle you can normally remove the door trim enough to get to the motorised lock mechanism and by cutting a hole in the right place you can rotate the worm drive pinion to release the deadlock, at least you cound do that on earlier cars.

If you can get a charge to the battery by connecting to the stater motor, can you then get something long to reach the central locking button?

Oh dear. Painful. Shouldn't this form part of the insurance claim? Or is there no claim made so far for recovery or damage?

With the car deadlocked by key, in normal manner (one press of fob) the handle will be deadlocked and central locking button will not work. Unless the thiefs happened to press the fob twice on locking and deactivate deadlocking, in which case the handles (from inside)  and probably the button will work.

Unfortunately/ fortunately son told police he left spare key in car. No insurance now.

We are in Australia so parts are a bit difficult to access, along with good help..

Now trying to open bonnet from grill side.. this seems impossible?

Have got lower grill out.

Jacked up today and they have put hole in sump, so want to get bonnet open and check motor to make sure we are not putting good money after bad..

The thieving b#@@!!5ds.

It's not enough to take the car but drive it to trash it,.

That hole in sump is a big worry like you say. The mfd will have reported no oil pressure and oil level low and stop immediately but did they, and what damage has ensued? Awful...

The bonnet is a faff. Like the doors, but maybe less so,  can you find a good vag auto locksmith who may know a few tricks for door ingress? Which would then solve the bonnet issue. But I understand your concern on splashing cash now, knowing what you know.

Search broken bonnet cable octavia mk3 either inside briskoda or Google and see what you can find. If no help try a similar mqb platform car like golf. I'll see if I can find something.

Can’t get to starter motor (unless I am missing something).

Just noted another potential 2 options..

As thief has kindly ripped LHS guard partway off..

1) Can see wiring plug.. wonder if put power on to correct pins could this unlock it?

2) could unbolt door but not sure how lock works and this might just end up more problematic.

Tried locksmith’s but one said can’t do without key, other said can do Monday..

Thick red/yellow wire within that bellows should allow you get 12V into the system, main permanent power feed to door control unit.

Use a 12V supply that can't give more than about 15-20 Amps so there shouldn't be any risk of blowing the fuse (30 amp) supplying that wire.

  • Author

Thanks. Will try and work that out.

Bit of work as don’t have power supply but will get something going.

Battery charger?

Not many will put out more than 10 Amps. Earth to any unpainted metal, or the thickest brown wire in same bunch.

But you won’t be able to activate / deactivate door locks with just voltage as the bellows wiring will go to the door controller, then to the door lock isn’t it?

The controller will be sending out voltages to the door lock after receiving instructions. You’d need to intersect the door lock wiring after the controller but that is behind door card? Unless I’m not following, which is always possible…

Agreed, I was only offering a way to get charge into the car's battery, may or may not help.

Obviously, the a-pillar end of the wires that are used will need to be connected to a-pillar still.

No worries, checked charger and it’s only 8amp, so that bit is good.

Wonder if there is an easy plug to get to as this one requires stripping cover.

Time to start looking.

The Golf has 10mm bolts holding bonnet catch but these have Torq bolts so can’t access them.. looked at unbolting bonnet lock but that is torq with no room also.. grr…

Ok, this plug goes to indicator and washers on the bumper.

Would it be realistic to put 8amps through this?

Else I think might order keys.. 😢

Given the window is open slightly, I'd try and charge it via the 12v accessory socket on the centre console. Pretty sure they are wired directly to the battery via a couple of fuses.

TBH, with the sump as it is, it seems very unlikely that the engine isn't seriously damaged. :crying:

It's awful to get car back but with the looming likelihood of dark clouds forming.... and the access puzzles.

Clearly, a locksmith will eventually need power to code new keys, so once in you'll have to have a new battery or booster etc to hand. But I've lost track a little what some electrical power will do for you exactly now, with no keys or access to vehicle?

On power, from underneath, with under tray removed, is the alternators supply cable reachable?

On the bonnet latch, yet another pain and I've looked online as well.   It looks like there is perhaps space to reach up there from lower grill from your photo.  In mk2 versions (from memory),  with a long pick you could trigger the latch release. But you really need to know a close up of what your aiming for, or what is possible with the mk3 latch to help. Also carE with aircon rad with sharp implements.  I'll have a look at the mk7 golf latch later, I don't have car right now,  which may be similar design but probably will not be identical to mk3.

Seems like we are going nowhere!

All good.. in for a penny in for a pound…

Hoping to get power and bonnet open, hoping (against hope) that power would allow us to wind window down or unlock door. Not sure that keys are not inside but with flat battery can’t tell and windows to dark to see detail..

At least when we get open I will have some new tools.. it looks like thief was auto elec as has left card inside car with tools and kids toys ( Facebook page shows card and child on kids toy in the back) but who knows…

Will drop sump tomorrow and check bearing on piston rod and see what they are like. The oil in sump that I can reach seems clean.

If ok, probably pick up cheap sump and baffle then order OEM keys and wait for them.

It seems there is mixed feedback regards third parties providing and program keys when missing original.. although some say they can but want to charge $1,500 AUD.. I think too much to take a punt on..

Windows need the ignition on.

Bit of a nuisance that… ah well..

Is anyone able to see on their vehicle if there is a way to release bonnet?

can see videos and how to on older versions but not mk3

This might be valid given the MK3 Octavia and MK7 Golf are the same platform :

i

Is it manual windows in the back or electric, same for the boot popper?

If it were me, I'd start by trying to pop the bonnet or wind a manual window down with a bit of stiff fencing wire.

Last resort, I'd probably feel happier about breaking the window regulator than the glass and just give that open passenger window a solid push straight down.

Just be aware that when you reconnect power, there's a chance that the car may relock itself.

A half decent locksmith will probably have a pick for the lock, so should at least be able to open the car and release the steering lock without damage. The picks are available online and not particularly hard to use.

Can you not fashion something to pull the bonnet release through the open window?

@StevesTruck's aforementioned fencing wire or a decent length of 8/10mm metal pipe could do the job.

Of course if there is a block on the door preventing the pulling of the lever then ignore all I've just said. It's been a few years since I had my Octavia and I can't quite remember the setup.

All windows are electric so we have no option to wind down.

Have put a fair bit of weight on it trying to push down but no budging.

We used a quick release clamp to try and pull the bonnet release, but as mentioned the door trim stops this from releasing.

The bonnet catch cable is apparently similar to Golf but my understanding is this runs on top and need bonnet open to access. It appears that the Golf is easier to get into..

Have to say Octavia is a really secure car..
