Engine cover, do we really need it?

Update:

The test that i was waiting for many days, i had to test the new coolant, the new gear box oil and of course to check for another time if that work inside the air filter box worth it.

On the way to the gas station i heard a noise from behind of the car, i slow down a bit and a scooter passed by and the driver shouted to me ''the tyre, air".

I know that is is a trick for street gangs to make you stop and as you come out of the car the other member goes to the passenger side and snatches whatever you have in the seat. I checked my mirrors, no one is coming from behind and the scooter driver didn't stopped and moved away so that was not a trick.

I arrived in the gas station and i saw that my rear left tyre was almost flat, first i thanked (in my mind) the unknown Pakistani driver for the notification, fill gasoline 98 octane and air in my tyre and i asked my self, was a puncture or a valve air lose? I had to make a test, so do i abandon everything and i return home i moving on?

I took the decision to move on, i made another 2 stops in gas station to check the air in the tyre but no problem which means there is a tiny hoe (and after 1-2 days the tyre will get flat) or a kid as a prank remove some air from my tyre. More on this in few days when i will go to the tyre repair shop for further inspection.

As for the test was: City traffic, boulevard, Mountain road for a while (no U turns etc), Highway and City traffic. i began with 92023 Km on the odometer and finished with 92073. Again wonderful feeling with acceleration, engine noise as in the other 3 tests so i can say now guaranteed that the work inside the air filter worthed and paid back, i did the best thing. :muscle:

Photos and results from the Fuel Consumption soon, as you may have read i had a disaster plus that problem with the air so i am not calm now.

Same code, one (top) bought in a parts store and the other (beneath) is from an e-store.       Look the same in diameter but as you can see they have a difference in the end.

Unfortunately the 3.40' is a ''rule'' for VW no matter the season but if there is one positive thing is that now with the modified air box filter in the first few hundered meters the car is one click

Except the problem with the tyre i had another one in the gas station, i show the employee the receipt, paid with credit card and i saw the amount: 77,7 euro !

I said to him are you mad, what is this? The employee was confused with a truck which was in the other pump and fill up diesel his tank, then he return my money in cash because he couldn't cancel the previous payment.

I was not in a good mood, i was waiting for this test for days and 2 problems before i start it?  Add the problem with the burned wiper blade motor and you will realise that this test was an adventure.

Here is the result for the Fuel Consumption.

The photo is not good by i had the sun reflections plus the worry for the tyre and the burned motor.

The Σ symbol is visible, means Total.

I began with 9.6 ltr gasoline and 94.9 Km on the odometer and i finished with 13 ltr and 144.5 Km, so i consumed 3.4 ltr gasoline for 49.6 Km distance.

This is 6.85 ltr/ 100 Km or 41.24 Uk MPG for a mixed road conditions test, better than the previous but i feel i had to make another one before i say Case Closed.

This tube brings fresh air from a high pressure area inside the air filter box.

I want to locate the position that Skoda has the factory spot for Felicia, must be a hole behind the bumper but i will try to find a tube to extend it so the air will income better.

This can be done only if the car is lifted, i will try to find an opportunity in a local repair shop here.

That guy doesn't want to go anywhere near areas of flood water with that.

The tube has a J shape, i don't think it's so easy for water to come up.

The red highlights are his.

So the engine might stop through lack of air and it's just wet legs pushing the car out, which is better.

There must be a drain hole inside the air filter box, mine has but for sure it's not enough if the front of the car dives into water (big pothole or stagnant water).

I am not so sure that the underpressure from the throttle could pull inside drops of water (which must pass the gauze filter).

Here is the video from that modification.

Take a look at 0:53 the Anemometer which installed to take measures.

There were no measurements that I noticed from before this was fitted as a comparator.

Interesting that the inlet scoop was partly covered from direct line of air by the the body rail, disturbed air might be better or worse.

What will you do about the cold air in winter.

  • Author

I already have done 4 tests and i will do another one before my summer vacation trip.

I have seen (and i expect) positive results but in winter i will have a complete image.

Regardless of any technical value, it serves an aesthetic purpose when one opens the bonnet and gazes down upon the engine compartment of one's Skoda like a proud parent upon their new-born. Imagine one's body having no skin and walking round with just a transparent sack of organs on view. Not pretty.

At 16:50 till 18:02 says for bad factory design that sucks hot air, see? the engineers are not ''perfect" guys and always there is room for improvement.

So even in modern cars an small modification can do the difference.

Today was the day for the final test of FC with the modified air filter box in hot summer City conditions.

The next would be after i finish my vacations trip in the country so no City traffic conditions.

From 92023 the indication reached the 92133 ,actually from 94,9 Km reached the 205,4  Km in the odometer which means 110,5 Km distance mainly in City traffic and some kilometres in Mountain road till 3rd gear only, so no 4th gear or no red line rpm zone.

The ''drawback" of the not good acceleration with 3rd gear in 2000 rpm in uphill was present of course, after the modification is "taken for granted"  and i can not do anything about it but let's see the results of the FC.

276632588_.jpg.d6da8ea0f2af9de02420318b6da765bb.jpg

For those 1110,5 Km the gas pump shown 8,670 ltr which means the Total FC was 7,84 ltr/ 100 Km or 36.03 British MPG. 🤩

The modification WORKS and all these tests approve it, after the vacations trip (Highway, Mountain roads) there are some tests to do in the winter (City traffic) and i have covered all the seasons and all situations.

I don't regret even for a second for cutting that part of plastic, helped me to install easier the Heat Shield, lubricated easier the cable, cleaning the throttle quicker etc.

Unfortunately i didn't had the chance yet to locate the exactly point (behind the bumper) that brings fresh air inside the air filter box but i think the extra hose in the grill mesh did it's job.

The summer Fuel Consumption tests are over, photos and comments in a new topic.

Since we talk about covers, air intakes etc i have found this.

For every 10 'F colder air some engines can take 1 HP.

As for the cutted cover take a look how it was

and how is now.

EC.jpg.7556451b0ee226c7a41bcaac1b862763.jpg

In the past i couldn't work-maintenance-check things beneath it as i can do now.

By the way i saw a spot from the exhaust manifold that has been ''uncovered'', i will fix it soon.

Is your engine in the region of 254.46 hp to gain this 1 hp at 83c.

The climax was going from top to buttom, was a snapshot.

Was an (general rule) example of how the hot incoming air affects the performance.

Fair enough, but +1 hp at 254.46 would surely be within margin of error of testing but I do understand your general point.

Update:

The TC-6 comes with it's own temperature sensor, since i already have 2 small digital gauges in the central console for in-out temperature i have the thought to make this as:

_vyrp11_1920200330_130340.jpg.080b9916b8217f02280c8dd82348c701.jpg

''incoming air sensor" inside the air filter box.

it's already has a hole and i can use it to put a small screw and attach it inside the (modified) air filter box.

One tiny hole, the cable comes out and i will ask from the electrician to make an extension of the existing cable and a small plug so if i had to remove and carry away the air filter box this wire won't be a restriction.

I can't think any other use of that sensor.

ambient temp sensor as it should be

For educational purposes:

The Chevy Bowtie emblem on the “normal” 2014 Camaro is a large, textured gold form with a chrome trim piece running around the border. The Bowtie badge is designed with aerodynamics in mind, but having any solid object across the grille can affect air flow – even if only by a small amount. After all, that small amount could be the difference between winning a race and losing to a car with an engine running a little cooler late in the race. The Z/28’s Flowtie has only the chrome outer edge and the middle is left open to allow 3 addition cubic meters of air to enter the engine bay each minute. This allows the engine coolant and the engine oil to both run about 2 degrees (F) cooler and that translates to more durability and more power during the rigors of road racing.

2014 Chevy Camaro Z/28 - Increasing Air Flow 'Flowtie' Badge

The results were a win. Affectionately referred to as the “Flowtie” by the engineering team, the hallowed out bowtie added just enough airflow to the engine to cool it by a staggering 2 degrees during track sessions. 2 degrees may not seem like a enough to justify the production of a new emblem but when you are developing the most track capable Camaro ever built everything counts and the modified bowtie earner its spot  on all Z28 Camaros.
