Strange "humming" noise when driving....

Featured Replies

Hi....

I'm getting “I can only describe it as” a humming/yowl sound when I'm driving in both normal drive and sports mode,...the sound gets louder the faster I go,...it's even there when I let the car coast along in neutral, but isn't there when I stop and idle the engine..

There is no other “peculiar” noises or warning lights appearing on the dash

The car is a 2010 Octavia, 115000 miles, Serviced every year or 10000 miles by my local "non-Skoda" garage....

Just checked the tires, there doesn't appear to be any wear....

You are checking for a saw edge pattern on the inside edges.

If they are NOT directional tyres then try swapping them from side to side.

Tyre or wheel bearing. If it started all of a sudden and tyres are new kn good condition. I'd say wheel bearing. You can try loading up on side of car to determine if sound changes.

I'd have gone with wheel bearing too.

I got this noise and after looking at this forum, I swapped the front wheel bearings but the front discs were very corroded along with the disc dust covers, (they were like burnt toast) and I ended up swapping the lot. The humming noise has now gone but I can’t tell you which component. Once I got the hubs off, they felt okay to turn. But one was stiff in the same part of the turn.  So, no saying.
