Keyfob battery flat - start car ?

Featured Replies

Hi

!.5 DSG SEL

When the keyfob fails (battery) how to unlock and start car?

Thanks in advance.

Use the spare one?

You should also have a physical key inside the key fob that you can use? At least I did with my 10 year old Focus. My Kamiq has a proper key so not an issue.

As above, use the key located in the fob to open the door and place key next to start/ stop button as per the instructions in the owners manual.

Was going to say the same as previous poster, use the physical key?

Then carry a spare battery in your wallet or in the car.

Thanks for the replies.

I do have spare batteries but they were not in the car.

Yes I know there is a key on the fob but once in car there is no ignition to put key in. It's a push the button start on my SEL.

So question remains, is it possible to start the engine when fob battery dead?

Yes it is - as pointed out by others - simply use the whole fob to press the starter button as per the manual

Usually you don't need battery power to start the car. There is a chip inside the key which communicates via induction with the immobiliser to switch the immobiliser off. My daughter's Fiat Panda has a key with no battery, although it has a traditional blade, and I use that all the time to start it.

My key fob died this morning among the mountains...

I could open the car but not start the engine as described in the manual. Luckily I had a spare battery..

My wife and I both have spare batteries, mine in my wallet, hers in her purse. We also have a spare in the car. Had to fit one last week as the car was whinging about low key battery.

With my 2020 Kamiq SE-L, a warning message appears in the display in front of the driver when the battery needs replacing. However, keeping a spare battery in the car is a good idea so I will do so.
