Hi all, sorry for newbie question.

Today I was just checking the car from bellow and I noticed a significant leak of oil below the motor/gearbox. (the oil is NOT dripping to the ground yet).
The car is from 2013 petrol.

Not sure is its because I put too much oil, if its coming from motor or if I am loosing oil from gearbox and how significant the problem is.

Any tip greatly appreciated. Thank you

Hi, welcome to the forum. Is there any sign of oil leaks higher up on the engine? Do you think that you may have overfilled with oil recently?

If no to first question, it could mean that the crankshaft seal is leaking - this would mean removal of the gearbox to check, is there any sign of the clutch slipping?

The oil spread is is oddly localised, but it seems to be leaking here.

Thanks for replies, additional info.

1. Top of the motor is very clean, no oil leak visible

2. It's possible that I put a little too much oil when changing oil last time, just a bit above the upper bend on the oil measurement rod.

3. Changing gears smooth and exact

4. Clutch works smooth and easy.

5. There is a small difference in the sound when idling with and without clutch pressed.

Maybe an idea to get some degreaser and clean the area off, then you can see if

 

1/ it's still leaking

2/ if it is where abouts it's coming from

One quesion more please.

Is there any way how to see/check the level of the oil in the gearbox, or if there is a little oil in gearbox?

Or better change it straightaway, and see how much was there?

This is the best course of action, IMO.

I hope that doesn't mean what I think it does, do you not mean the upper part of the flat measuring area where it transitions to the round section?

Up to the red mark(car was not straight or something happened), I removed some extra oil couple of weeks later.

Probably the rear main bearing seal in which case.

You're welcome. If you park your Skoda in a garage after you've cleaned and washed the degreaser off and it's had time to dry out get a largish piece of cardboard and put it under the car. That way you'll see any drops of oil more easily and that'll help you see where it's coming from.👍

Hi, I don't see any oil drops on the concrete bellow the car.

Gearbox oil is thicker, and stinkier.

Taste.

Check the oil filter housing.

A small oil overfill should not cause a leak.

@tomtorIs that the Oil level checked stone cold, engine not started?

 

When was the last Oil & Filter Service or the oil level checked?

 

Where is it when checked at Normal Operating Temperature so at least above 80*oC, parked on the flat and after a few minutes stopped.

Usually the gearbox oil level is checked by removing the filler plug - correct level is when oil is up to bottom of filler hole with vehicle level on ground.

Gearboxes, unless TC automatics, normally do not have a dipstick.
