Speed Alert

Featured Replies

Is my recently purchased 2024 Karoq faulty I wonder?*

The speed alert thing generally works fine, giving me a ‘bong’ within feet of a change in limit.

If I creep over the limit by about 3 mph I get 3 bongs.

However, if I go into a lower limit carrying a bit of speed, nothing!

Admittedly the little speed limit roundel on the dash flashes, but no audible alert.

If it’s working as designed then it’s flawed.

The system in the Karoq works differently from my Superb where I get a much larger visual alert and a hard to ignore audible signal.

Only ever had 2 speeding tickets in my 70 years and both were for carrying a little too much speed into a 30 limit.

* Yes I’ll speak to the dealer but in all fairness I feel I know what the answer will be, ‘ it’s a characteristic sir’………

New Mandatory Speed Limiters fitted now on new cars in the EU and ones will be here in the UK now even if the rules are not the same in Great Britain but are in Northern Ireland (Part of the UK.)

It will be interesting to hear from members with new cars registered recently and ones registered in July 2024 how their new system works, or not.

On my late 23 Karoq I can select speed limit warning at 0mph, 3mph or 5mph over the speed limit and have visual or visual and audio alarm.

It does work if you enter a lower speed zone if you are over the preset limit.

@Berisford  Are your speed alerts as default without you enabling them.

Just automatic speed warnings on each restarting of the car, so the new system?

Correct - they are on automatically - it can be switched off vis the 'Car' menu.

I'm happy to have the system, it's not too intrusive - it's just that it doesn't give an audible alert if I carry too much speed into a lower limit area.......

Maybe just a location location location thing at the moment for 30 mph or 20 mph speed limits in the UK.

Your areas at the moment not giving an audible warning.

You know where you are though do you not so are aware if a built up area with street lighting and not a dual carriageway, and also not posted at 20 mph with repeater signs.

Neither my 2022 Superb or the 2024 Karoq 'limit' my speed, they just nag for a few seconds and then cease - I thought that maybe the Karoq system relied on GPS / mapping data but not strictly true, it picks up reduced limits in roadworks and the overhead gantries on motorways.

The Superb system is different inasmuch as it warns of a lower limit ahead and if in ACC mode starts to slow automatically so that you enter the lower limit zone at the correct speed.

No, the car knows exactly what the limit is as per the dash, I get a small 20 -30 - 40 - 50 -60 else 70 miniature roundel that flashes if overspeed and the speedo shows a red marker at whatever the limit is as well as giving a audible gong whenever the limit changes, be that up or down.

Tis true, I am aware of my surroundings and generally know what the limit is, I'm not given to 'speeding'. However, in these country parts in which I live a growing trend, along with the stupid oft used 20mph areas is the creeping out of the 30 / 20 limits, that is, moving the zone further out, often into fielded areas, which in turn the so called 'safety team' take advantage. If you've travelled a road for 50 years it takes time to get used to a new limit.

Anyway, I digress, bottom line is does anyone else notice the lack of a audible warning when carrying speed into a lower zone?

I get you.

This stretch of road to my house was national speed limit until 5 years ago and then they imposed a 40mp speed limit.  A few months ago they dropped it to 30mph.

No 30mph signs, they just removed the 40's.

Catches a lot of people out.   Google maps still shows it as a 40mph but the Karoq correctly reports it as 30mph.

Enforcement likely to be a problem if the speed limit isn't correctly signed.

Doesn't need to be signed.

Road leads from a residential area which is built up with street lights .

Previously was signed national speed limit, then signed 40mph, now signs removed so it's 30mph. No requirement to sign.

@Berisford  The Mandatory EU limiters from the 7th July have 3 types of system.

You have the least intrusive. next is over the limited you need to put more pressure on the accelerator and the most intrusive is the power is reduced to reduce the vehicles.

Like at an Indoor Karting track kart can be.

I know that road well - as you say, dropped to 30 without any advisory signage - as is the norm now for NCC.

When another local road (50 years a 40 limit to my knowledge) was similarly castrated from 40 to 30 without any notices I complained to NCC and was passed from pillar to post.

Bottom line was that as a driver I should be paying attention and that notices advising of a lower speed limit are not necessary!

I dispute that, a new sign may well catch your attention but remove a sign and you’d be very fortunate to notice.

How the hell do I turn off the warning sound so that it stays off by default?

It comes back on each time I start the car and it's starting to drive me insane?

@bigcon what have you got, a new car with the EU,s new speed limiter / warning system?  When was it built or first registered?    New ones are going to default on each start are they not, even though not yet required in the UK other than in Northern Ireland since the 7 th July.

Too many unnecessary so called 'driver aids' on new cars with drivers relying on them too much. I buy cars with as few of them on as possible and those that are I switch off as I start driving. I don't need the car telling me someone is in my blind spot, I'm wandering across a white line, I'm going over a speed limit etc etc.

The cars have them mandatory now in the EU and Northern Ireland, and we will see when the RofUK adopts or not, but the stuff is built in now.

The Speed limiters which ever of 3 types are available to switch off or over ride as you please just now, but then there is Data Logging so crash investigators will be able to check how often and where the speed limiters were disabled or over ridden, which is perfectly fine.

As to the speed warnings, they are dead simple, keep to the limit and you should never be alerted,

But then the systems can be crap and get the actual speeds or revised restrictions wrong.

That will be partly because the Mainland UK and islands other than Northern Ireland has not legislated to have mandatory Speed Warnings or limiters for passenger cars.

I'm in the EU and I only bought the car on Thursday (new). It's so frustrating, particularly at the low limits that everyone exceeds, very off putting and annoying. I would go as far to say it's more likely to cause an accident as everytime it pings I immediately start going into the menus to turn it off.

Simple solution don't ignore the limits. Not everyone does exceed the low limits which are there for a reason.

Ok, other than the temporary limits around Scottish schools at the ends of the school day and lunch hour, and/or around hospitals, name one 20mph limit with illustration(s).

That's great advice and really helps with the issue.

I hate the pings, obviously doesn’t happen much as I am careful. Im

happy to have the display but don’t want the sound.  The default is sound - not sure if display too.
I have the virtual cockpit display showing my digital speed, so I am aware.

@Paws4Thotlots of main / high street 20 mph limits every day and every hour of the day / night.  Tomorrow I will drive on 20 mph main roads in Maybole South Ayrshire, Burrelton & Woodside Perthshire and Forfar Angus. 29 town or villages in Perth and Kinross without enough pavement or lighting.

Pretty sure that the change from 40 to 30 should be signed. Presumably there is nothing going the other way?

If the road was a thirty going into a forty and now it's no longer forty, just taking the sign away that changed it to 40 is all that is necessary.

Signs are only needed when the road speed changes as you drive along it. Not when  it happened earlier in the year.

Councils usually run a public awareness campaign when it's happening
