Wow whats happened to the Superb ? My last Skoda ?

Featured Replies

Mine will be 7 years old by the end of 2024 and I´m thinking about to replace it. But prices for brand new car have become crazy (in France)…

I’ve specced Superb Estate Mk4 L&K, Arteon Estate, VW Passat Estate, ID7 Tourer (just to have an idea) but all come between €64000 to &71000 😳 OMG !

It’s getting crazy! I think I may look a 2021-2022 second hand car…

Yeah it's mad I'm a life long petrolhead but I guess it's a sure sign your getting old when you think .... mmmm.... That 50k would make x interest a year in the bank 🤣

Agreed, prices r ridon-culous of new cars now!!

Can't get the performance, value and practicality of a Superb for the price I paid many years ago.

Gandalf has now ticked over 7 yrs.....and I don't have any plans to replace it any time so soon 😁

Agree, I've been looking in slow time and coming to the came conclusion. I find the latest Mk4 Superb to be more of a boring, rounded and anonymous design than the previous edge-ier Mk3, though I will await the Sportline version of the Mk4 - if it ever appears. Similarly, there's nothing exciting in the drivetrains and the engine is going backwards in power compared to the MK3's 206/280.

I suspect I will be keeping my Mk3 for a while yet.

I would be tempted to keep my Mk3 too… If I did not have to face several  significant problems over its 120000 km and 7 years on the clock:

- Coolant pump

- Front shock absorbers (DCC ones)

- Sunroof seal

All representing a total of unscheduled €2800 repair costs…

Not mentionning all what I repaired myself, including an unexpected coding loss on Blind Spots detection and Rear Trafic Alert, which has come back again. But I can’t solve it this time. I fear how much my local dealer is going to ask to fix it

Partilly disappointed by my Mk3 reliability compared to my former Mk2.

Not sure the next one will be a Skoda (though reliability is not way better with other brands).

Mind you … Looking around there are a few almost new 280’s with just a few k on the clock for around 35k ….

Say £12k for mine …..

Does it make sense ?

Another 10 years motoring ? Mind you mine has had the struts replaced, water pump ( recently ) gear stick selector prob and a few others ….

Replace or spend a few quid on mine ?

Personally I think the Superb mk4 isn’t great looking and the Passat has the edge, but I really like the look of the digital dials in the new superb over what the Passat has.

Worst thing is the impending ban on ICE vehicles soon due to stupidity so I think I’ll just stick with my 2016 superb until it dies

The ban will be on buying and first registering New ICE vehicles,

still 11 years away or if back to 2030 still 6 years away and then even  that may not happen then and it could be pushed back.

An early euro 6 petrol or diesel might not be made uneconomical to run if 14 or up to 19 years old by the times this happens.

Maybe were people do not need to be going into the growing number of LEZ,s then not an issue.

Not getting rid of the 280 at any point. Absolutely love the car and dislike the MKIV. Might look for a small city car and use that to keep the mileage at a reasonable level on the 280 (currently 49k).

The crazy taxes on « sports cars » in France since 2019 killed the TSI280 here. There is NO TSI280 MY19 or onward on the second hand market.

Thus, it’s hard to decide changing for a TSI280 that is only 1 year less than mine…

Only possibility would be to import one from Germany were they are more numerous. But special taxe would still be applicable, though a bit decreased depending on car age…

Hard decision…

Other possibility that I am thinking about: Change my Mk3 for a « reasonable » daily and buy an old car. Maybe a Triumph TR4 or even more « crazy », to still get fun with a car.

Looking back my 1.4Tsi Superb was crazy value in 2018.  Brand new via drive the deal. A few options including variable boot floor, fold flat front seat, all season tyres,  etc. £18k plus 2 free services.

60'000 mile without missing a beat. My only complaint would be the rear discs being made of cheese. Needed replaced under 25k.

In Aberdeenshire last week. And Sutherland in February.

OE disc brakes seem to bad, especially the rears

Some have had the disc literally fall apart and fronts not better either.

I’m going to change my fronts soon with brembo coated discs (bog standard, I’ve got have them on the rear and coating still looks brand new after few years) and ate ceramic pads, saves cleaning all the time and not seen any issues on my test car (wife’s fiat 500 🤫)

Spend a few quid on yours, Nick.

The brakes on mine are absolutely fine; no sign of heat, corrosion, pitting or destruction on the fronts or rears and I’m nearly on 50k. I also find them to have excellent stopping power. However, the PITA is the dust, so….

….on the basis of this, are these Brembo and ATE pads the way to reduce the dust?

It depends where u live and how u drive.

My previous car, mk2 Octavia RS, the factory pads & discs lasted 86k kms before I had to change them.

My Superb's factory rear brakes outlasted the front brakes - they still had 5.5mm left after 90k kms, whilst the front was down to 2mm.

Both r still in good condition, no rust at all, or falling apart.

Because of the low fronts, I changed both front and rear with DBA pads & discs.

The discs are just discs but the magic happens with the ATE ceramics

Was talking to my friend who replaced his dads beemer front disc and pads today with the same combo and 2 years he changed front and backs with same combo on his own beemer, and discs still look brand new and coating still there.

If you go ATE ceramics for our car they’re directional and seen some vids of people putting them on the wrong way as they don’t know they’re directional but instructions are fairly crap at explaining it, in fact all manufacturers of directional pads seem crap at explaining

I think in general BMW’s have much better brakes, next time you see one look at the discs and usually super shiney m; whereas mine never are but then I don’t drive like a bmw driver 😁

That's exactly what I did. Got a 2022 Mk3 FL from across the border in Germany and it has the 2.0 TDI, which AFAIK is not available in France. Luckily, it only cost about 1k in eco tax compared to nearly 8k for the equivalent petrol version. Only owned it for 8 months, but so far I had no problems. I also didn't really like look of the new line of Octavias and Superbs, so it worked out well in the end.

Sorry but it IS. ;)

Really? The 147kw?

Some time back I tried configuring it on the Skoda website, but had no luck and also couldn't find a used one and I vaguely remember reading that this particular engine and trim weren't available... I might as well be wrong.

Still, I don't regret the trip to Germany :) - some 600 km of Autobanh to clear up the DPF ;)

Did you see any improvement vs the OEM discs and pads?

Being new pads & discs, the bite is slightly better, as expected, but otherwise feels like OEM+

It's only been 2 weeks, but no signs of brake dust yet.

Mine is a MY18 TDI190. TDI200 were proposed on FL versions in France. ;)

Nice. I will soon be due for discs and pads, so am considering aftermarket...
