Basics: how to restart the engine after manually switching off?

Featured Replies

New to Skoda and new here, so my apologies if I'm asking a question already answered (that I can't find by searching Topics).

Fabia 2021 Mk3 TSI manual, keyless/button start.
Main dealer-bought, 18,000 miles.

Problem/question:
I have driven 30+ miles and need to answer the phone or set a route in the satnav.

Stop the car on the side of the road; auto stop/start does not stop the engine. (Never does during the first journey of the day, however far it's driven.)

Stop the engine manually by pressing the button.

Attempt to restart some minutes later.

Nothing. No warnings, no starter motor - nothing.

Extreme solution: get out of the car, lock it with the keyfob, unlock it, get back in, engine starts.

There must be a simple answer to this, surely.

Thanks
Snick

Are you depressing the clutch when starting?

Yes: clutch down/depressed whether it's in neutral or in gear; handbrake on.

It’s probably worth getting the battery tested or at least charged on a smart charger. If the problem continues it’s probably worth getting a diagnostic scan.

Thanks, yes, probably a sensible idea to have the battery checked. But locking and unlocking the car will have used more battery power, and it restarts without any issue after I've gone through this silly routine, which would suggest the battery isn't at fault. But that's coming from 10+ years with a Ford with very few electronic toys to cripple the battery/charging system.

It is under some sort of dealer warranty, but I'll not bank on much there: they've done some pretty minimal clearning-servicing-tidying up for the sale and still have a so-called freebie to honour.

The key fobs have a motion sensor that puts fob to sleep mode if not moved. Perhaps you getting out etc is waking up the fob. Worth a try moving fob around before trying to start to see if that does the trick.

There is an issue anyway battery or not that Stop / Start does not work first journey of the day no matter how far it is driven.

Kenny R, I had wondered if I need to press unlock or something, so I'll try an experiment on the way home tomorrow (all the lay-bys on that road are on the left on the way home, and the battery will be in a better state).

Yes, Ootohere, I am assuming the Stop/Start is not a part of my problem but is a problem in itself; lots here and elsewhere on this wonderful system.

Thanks everyone.

Would a Mk3 Fabia fob have a motion sensor in it ???

I'm assuming the car is not keyless entry ???

And that would be the only logic that the fob would have a motion sensor in it.

I'm happy to be educated if i'm incorrect.

If it has keyless entry, then okey dokey.

@Snickthemapw You do not have to get out of the car to lock it with the fob, if you need to.

Keyless entry, as in the 3-button key fob, and keyless/button start.

I'll sit in a lay-by and mess around with buttons tomorrow. Would killing the Stop/Start have any effect, perhaps, as per the button by your right knee? That's another one to try.

@Snickthemapw

If you have to press a button to open the vehicle then that is not really called 'keyless entry'.

No worries tho eh....

Tech and terminology - you live and learn (well, maybe). Thanks for the detail, Tilt.

As to the problem, I only tried the manual switch off once today, and of course the car restarted without complaining (with auto Stop/Start not available but the second journey of the day). Only a brief shut down, though. This is with the same key fob that I had with me at the weekend when it wouldn't re-start, so I'm even more in the dark than before. I'll keep experimenting.

It sounds like you have 'keyless start' - Not full KESSY (keyless entry and start)
